I've been practicing yoga off and on for about 6 years. I'm truly in love with this mind/body/spirit connection. I've since left my job in the hospital in nutrition and decided to begin my massage practice again and would like to implement teaching yoga as well. I feel in yoga every person is in their own journey so I should not judge myself. I practice yoga and think that yoga teachers are there to guide us through the poses showing how to properly allign ourselves and reminding students of breating techniques, etc. I would say that even though you cannot complete some asanas to the full expression that you shouldn't let that hold you back. You have thought about this for a substantial amount of time. Not everyone has the same flexibility as each other. I think yoga is also about expression for each individual.
