China (simplified Chinese: 中国; traditional Chinese: 中國; Hanyu Pinyin: Zhōngguó (help·info); Tongyong Pinyin: Jhongguó; Wade-Giles: Chung¹kuo²) is a cultural region, an ancient civilization, and, depending on perspective, a national or multinational entity extending over a large area in East Asia.

In 1949, when major combat ended in the Chinese Civil War, two political entities emerged:

China has one of the world's oldest civilizations and has the oldest continuous civilization. It has archaeological evidence dating back over 5,000 years. It also has one of the world's oldest written language systems, and is viewed as the source of many major inventions. China was the largest and most advanced economy for much of recorded history. Historically, China's cultural sphere has extended across East Asia as a whole, with Chinese religion, customs, and writing systems being adopted to varying degrees by neighbors such as Japan, Korea and Vietnam. The first evidence of human presence in the region was found at the Zhoukoudian cave and is one of the first known specimens of Homo erectus, now commonly known as the Peking Man, estimated to have lived from 300,000 to 550,000 years ago.

What are the implications of China devaluing its currency?
Q. Why is America getting so upset about the possibility of China devaluing its currency? Is it really that bad? Surely it will help countries that import goods from China?
Asked by Carefree - Fri Dec 5 14:59:26 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. By making their money cheaper it makes their goods cheaper. So, yes, people buy more from them cheaper. But that moves money to China, it drains money from the United States that because they are making OUR goods MORE expensive they don't buy from us. Exchange rates if are allowed to operate in a free market, float normally, their money would increase value to balance the unfair, unequal trade balance, making our goods cheaper and they would buy more from us. But China is controlling their money value by manipulation to drain money from other countries.

Why does China buying USA bonds therefore peg the yuan to dollar exchange rate as low and stabilise the ER ?
Q. I am not an economist. If the USA runs up debt serviced by bonds, at present China buys the debt as bonds, gilts etc. This sounds ominous. This encourages US debt and keeps bond yields low, as they can easily find a buyer at present ? Surely it can all go horribly wrong if China, amongst others, stop buying ? My real question is why do they buy up US debt? What is the advantage for China in terms of dollar yuan exchange rates ?
Asked by awindsor200 - Tue Nov 11 07:14:50 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The advantage for China is that it keeps exports high, keeping the economy growing and the people happy. They have a lot of US dollars from the export business, so they invest in US dollar assets. They keep thier reserves of US dollars high to keep thier currency peg in place. If China stopped buying what would happen? I suspect that the US dollar would loose value, and imports to the US decrease, exports increase, a bit inflationary for the US, and might push up interest rates a bit, increasing the savings rate at home, would not be a bad thing. I doubt it would spell any sort of catastrophy.

China is a cultural region and ancient civilization in East Asia. China refers to a one of the world's oldest civilization comprising successive states and cultures dating back more than 6,000 years. Due to the stalemate of the last Chinese Civil War following World War II, China currently looks like two separate countries: the People's Republic of China (PRC) and Republic of China (ROC). The PRC administers and governs mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau, while the ROC administers and governs Taiwan and its surrounding islands. Each government used to claim that it was the only official government of China. However, PRC is nowadays widely accepted in the world as the only offical government.
