The Caribbean is a region consisting of the Caribbean Sea, its islands (most of which enclose the sea), and the surrounding coasts. The region is located southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and Northern America, east of Central America, and to the north of South America.

Situated largely on the Caribbean Plate, the region comprises more than 7,000 islands, islets, reefs, and cays. These islands, called the West Indies, generally form island arcs that delineate the eastern and northern edges of the Caribbean Sea. These islands are called the West Indies because when Christopher Columbus landed here in 1492 he believed that he had reached the Indies (in Asia).

The region consists of the Antilles, divided into the larger Greater Antilles which bound the sea on the north and the Lesser Antilles on the south and east (including the Leeward Antilles), and the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands, which are in fact in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba, not in the Caribbean Sea.

Geo-politically, the West Indies are usually reckoned as a sub-region of North America and are organized into 27 territories including sovereign states, overseas departments, and dependencies. At one time, there was a short-lived country called the Federation of the West Indies composed of ten English-speaking Caribbean territories, all of which were then UK dependencies.

The region takes its name from that of the Carib, an ethnic group present in the Lesser Antilles and parts of adjacent South America at the time of European contact. In the English-speaking world, someone from the Caribbean is usually referred to as a "West Indian," although the phrase "Caribbean person" is sometimes used.

What is the best resort in the caribbean that is all inclusive and has a nice casino?
Q. I am going there for my 18th birthday with some people and would like to gamble/drink and have a good time. Where is the best place in the caribbean to do this?

A. The Westin Aruba Resort ( ) is probably one of the highest-rated. They've got a huge casino (1,115 square meter). The Breezes Puerto Plata Resort Spa & Casino All Inclusive ( ) just finished some extensive renovations, so that might be another "good bet". ;-) Good luck!

What is the weather like in December in the Western Caribbean?
Q. We are going on a cruise to the Western Caribbean in late December of 2008. What is the weather like there? Is it warm enough to go swimming and stuff?

A. It's beautiful that time of the year and is plenty warm once you get to the Caribbean. If you are starting out in Florida, you will have perhaps 1&1/2 days of nice, but not real warm weather, then it becomes beautiful. Great time to cruise the caribbean

What to pack for a Western Caribbean cruise in December-January?
Q. My husband and I are going on a Western Caribbean cruise around New Year's Eve for our anniversary. What should we pack for the weather there? We will be stopping at the Bahamas, Jamaica, and the Grand Caymans. We have our formal wear for Captain's Night, but beyond that, I am at a loss.
Asked by MissBri - Mon Aug 27 20:51:42 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Carry light layers for casual wear. they weather is usually nice and will range from the high sevnties and can drop to the mid 60s at night. The further south you go the less change you will see in temperatures. The light layers are for the evenings or in case of a cold front. Other than that its like regular summer clothing. The Bahamas is the northern most part of the Caribbean (we technically aren't in the Caribbean sea, but The Atlantic Ocean) and in December its usually still pretty warm during the day and comfortably cool at night (with the exception of cold fronts) so Jamaica and Grand Caymans should be just beautiful.
