Greece /ˈɡriːs/ (help·info) (Greek: Ελλάδα, transliterated: Elláda [e̞ˈlaða] , historically Ἑλλάς, Hellás, IPA: [eˈlas]), officially the Hellenic Republic (Ελληνική Δημοκρατία, Ellīnikī́ Dīmokratía, [e̞liniˈkʲi ðimokraˈti.a]), is a country in southeastern Europe, situated on the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula. The Aegean Sea lies to the east and south of mainland Greece, while the Ionian Sea lies to the west. Both parts of the Eastern Mediterranean basin feature a vast number of islands, islets and rock islands. As such, it is the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, the Olympic Games, Western literature and historiography, political science, major scientific and mathematical principles, and Western drama, including both tragedy and comedy. Greece is a developed country, a member of the European Union since 1981, a member of the Economic and Monetary Union of the European Union since 2001, NATO since 1952, the OECD since 1961, the WEU since 1995, a founding member of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation and a member of ESA since 2005. I believe that Mykonos is not the most suitable place for someone to visit in the winter. Greece has many many places, not only the islands that are better in spring and summer, even in autumn. But,in winter I don't think it is a good idea. You can stay in Athens,it is very nice or you can visit one of the many mountains that Greece has.The closest to Athens is mountain Parnassos and the village of Arahova/There is also Kalavryta in Pelopponese,Pilio in central-eastern Greece and Karpenisi(lake Plastira is wonderful there) in central-western Greece. You should also visit Thessaloniki in Makedonia, which is the co-capital of Greece. There are also a lot of mountains close to Thessaloniki all over Makedonia that you could visit.F [cont.] Answered by Eleni H - Fri Dec 22 19:25:33 2006 Why do many cities and islands in Greece and Cyprus have different anglicised names in English?
Q. I have noticed that many major cities and islands in Greece and Cyprus have anglicised versions. For example: Athens instead of Athina Salonica instead of Thessaloniki Nicosia instead of Lefkosia Famagusta instead of Ammochostos Corfu instead of Kerkyra Crete instead of Kriti The list is endless. Why didn't they just call the capital 'Athina' instead of changing it to 'Athens'? Asked by Greek_Warrior - Sat Aug 23 05:45:44 2008 - - 8 Answers - 1 Comments A. This is not the case with Greece&Cyprus only; it is a well known&well established way of the world, since the beginning of time&different languages. Place names get translated in many languages. The English say "Moscow," not "Moskva"; would we say that "Moskva" is more correct, or just that "Moscow" is correct in English and "Moskva" in Russian? Russians say "Reem" instead of "Roma," just as the English say "Rome." The French say "Londres" instead of "London." Russians pronounce "Warszawa" much like Poles do (despite having a different alphabet), while English speakers say "Warsaw." The Poles retaliate by calling Italy "W ochy." Deutschland can be Allemagne, Germany, or Nemechyna (transliteration from Ukrainian imprecise), and while the… [cont.] Answered by Goca - Sat Aug 23 06:45:31 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Greece"
