The Netherlands (pronounced /ˈnɛðərləndz/ ( listen); Dutch: Nederland, pronounced [ˈneːdərlɑnt] ( listen)) is a country in Northwestern Europe, constituting the major portion of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is a parliamentary democratic constitutional monarchy. The Netherlands borders the North Sea to the north and west, Belgium to the south, and Germany to the east. The capital is Amsterdam and the seat of government is The Hague. The Netherlands is often called Holland, which is formally incorrect as North and South Holland are actually two of its twelve provinces (see terminology of "the Netherlands"). The word Dutch is used to refer to the people, the language, and anything pertaining to the Netherlands. The difference between the noun and the adjective is a peculiarity of the English language and does not exist in the Dutch language. Being one of the first parliamentary democracies, the Netherlands was a modern country from its inception. Among other affiliations the country is a founding member of the European Union (EU), NATO, OECD, WTO, and has signed the Kyoto protocol. With Belgium and Luxembourg it forms the Benelux economic union. The country is host to five international courts: the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, the International Criminal Court and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. The former four are situated in The Hague as is the EU's criminal intelligence agency Europol. This has led to the city being dubbed "the world's legal capital". The Netherlands is a geographically low-lying country, with about 27% of its area and 60% of its population located below sea level. Significant areas have been gained through land reclamation and preserved through an elaborate system of polders and dikes. Much of the Netherlands is formed by the estuary of three important European rivers, which together with their distributaries form the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta. Most of the country is very flat, with the exception of foothills in the far south-east and several low-hill ranges in the central parts created by ice-age glaciers. The Netherlands is a densely populated country. It is known for its windmills, tulips, clogs, delftware, Gouda cheese, visual artists, bicycles, and in addition, traditional values and civil virtues such as its social tolerance. The country has more recently become known for its liberal policies toward drugs, prostitution, homosexuality, euthanasia and abortion. The Netherlands has one of the most free market capitalist economies in the world, ranking 12th of 157 countries according to the Index of Economic Freedom. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How much crime has dropped in the Netherlands due to the legalizing of weed and other drugs? Q. Stuff like theft and mob gangs. Since drugs r legalized there value wud go down a hell of alot and addicts wouldn't have to rob stores or people for drug money, so has that worked in the Netherlands? Asked by Jason T - Sun Feb 22 04:59:15 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. The problem with the Netherlands is that they're the only one with legalized weed. Every shady character from Europe and America goes there to get high and party, so the crime industry is still doing very well. If other countries legalized marijuana and prostitution, I would expect the Dutch crime rate to drop considerably. Answered by remmycool - Sun Feb 22 05:07:55 2009 How many occupants can legally live in a 1-bedroom apartment in Netherlands? Q. I would like to know if husband and wife can live in a studio? Also is it possible for husband wife and a baby to live together in one bedroom apartment? Till what age of baby can the family stay in one bedroom apartment? All this for rules in netherlands! Asked by Canopus - Sat Aug 8 15:39:26 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Officially the children of each gender have to have a bedroom away from their parents and siblings of the other gender. But if you live in a house and a baby comes along, you can have it sleep in the parents bedroom for years. In a one bedroom apartment you normally have a living and a bedroom. In that case the parents can sleep in the living while the child gets the bedroom when he/she is too old to share a room with the parents. I would not advice it, neither would I suggest a couple to share a studio apartment (one room only) and if you live in the Netherlands legally, having a family that is too big for the house you live in will move you up the waiting list for a bigger house/apartment. But as there is a housing shortage in all… [cont.] Answered by Willeke - Sat Aug 8 16:00:06 2009 How do I become a Citizen of The Netherlands as I am american?
Q. I am a professional in the U.S.A right now I am 22 and I already know people who let me stay with them in rotterdam and I speak dutch I was just wondering how do i become a official citizen of the netherlands? And no im not going there for the coffee shops either. And I dont plan on coming back to the states either? Asked by Robbie Plant - Tue Apr 28 01:36:57 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Working backwards, to obtain citzenship you would either have to have entitlement via birth (one of your parents being Dutch) or naturalisation (after being resident) in the Netherlands. This means 3+ years in a registered partnership with a Dutch national (and in most cases he/she will have to have passed the civic integration examination ) and otherwise 5+ yes with given conditions. You c read all about obtaining Dutch nationality on the official site here So then comes the question, how can I live in the Netherlands for 5 years (assuming you are not in a relationship or have a Dutch parent). This is not as easy as just hopping on a plane and "moving". To stay beyond 90 days as an American and to work, you will have to obtain a… [cont.] Answered by bl bl - Tue Apr 28 04:07:05 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Netherlands" ' Netherland ' to Become a Film, and Mendes May Direct
