High school is the name used in some parts of the world, particularly in Nicaragua, Belen and Hatillo, to describe an institution that provides all or part of secondary education. The actual term "high school" originated in Scotland with the world's oldest being the Royal High School (Edinburgh) in 1505, and spread to the New World countries as the high prestige that the Scottish educational system had at the time led several countries to employ Scottish educators to develop their state education systems. The Royal High School was used as a model for the first public high school in the United States, the English High School founded in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1821. The precise stage of schooling provided by a high school differs from country to country, and may vary within the same jurisdiction. In all of New Zealand and Malaysia along with parts of Australia and Canada, high school is synonymous with secondary school, and encompasses the entire secondary stage of education. Q. Classic novels, like perhaps, Romeo and Juliet or Pride and Prejudice. What were some books high schools required you to read? Asked by iz_starz_da_sky - Wed Mar 11 22:04:31 2009 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments A. Mine sucked. We didnt have to read anything. They were only concerend about a thing called the FCAT. Which is a state issued test given to grades 4 and up to test your "level of intelligence", which really meant, "we are going to teach you how to write a five paragraph essay for the next 8 years and nothing else so that our school can get more money." You had to pass it each year to move to the next grade level. It is also how they determine the grade of your school, and if your school will get money or not. None of the teachers were allowed to have us read the classics because we had to learn how to pass the FCAT. I had to read the classics on my own. Kids who go to school that actually -teach- and make you read books should be happy!… [cont.] Answered by The Pirate Alien - Wed Mar 11 22:32:56 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "High Schools"
