New Zealand is an island country in the south-western Pacific Ocean comprising two main landmasses (commonly called the North Island and the South Island), and numerous smaller islands, most notably Stewart Island/Rakiura and the Chatham Islands. The indigenous Māori named New Zealand Aotearoa, commonly translated as The Land of the Long White Cloud. The Realm of New Zealand also includes the Cook Islands and Niue (self-governing but in free association); Tokelau; and the Ross Dependency (New Zealand's territorial claim in Antarctica).

New Zealand is notable for its geographic isolation: it is situated about 2000 km (1250 miles) southeast of Australia across the Tasman Sea, and its closest neighbours to the north are New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga. During its long isolation New Zealand developed a distinctive fauna dominated by birds, a number of which became extinct after the arrival of humans and the mammals they introduced.

The population of New Zealand is mostly of European descent; the indigenous Māori are the largest minority. Asians and non-Māori Polynesians are also significant minority groups, especially in urban areas. The most commonly spoken language is English.

New Zealand is a developed country that ranks highly in international comparisons on human development, quality of life, life expectancy, literacy, public education, peace, prosperity, economic freedom, ease of doing business, lack of corruption, press freedom, and the protection of civil liberties and political rights. Its cities also consistently rank among the world's most liveable.

Elizabeth II, as the Queen of New Zealand, is the country's head of state and is represented by a non-partisan Governor-General. The Queen has no real political influence, and her position is essentially symbolic. Political power is held by the democratically elected Parliament of New Zealand under the leadership of the Prime Minister, who is the head of government.

A. I had a whv for NZ about 2 years ago, it cost about 45 quid. Was real easy to get, just applied through the post and it took about 1 week. I would thoroughly recommend it, NZ is a beautiful place, would love to go back there one day. Good luck!

Is it customary for children to play outside unsupervised in New Zealand cities?
Q. In the USA, all kids are either inside playing video games, or being supervised by their parents when playing outside. I wonder if it is the same in New Zealand. Do parents let their kids play outside with other kids without parental supervision?

A. As an American immigrant to NZ one of the things that most shocked me when I first arrived here was how kids are left unsupervised at much younger ages than in the US. I work part-time at a video store and it is very common for kids as young as 8 to come in all on their own, having walked or biked from their houses by themselves. And this is not small-town or rural NZ we're talking about, this is Auckland, a city of 1.4 million. People here definitely feel safer, but I think it is mostly a perception thing. We don't have 24 hour news networks constantly making parents afraid. There are no headlines about kids disappearing. Kids also seem much more inclined to play outside in NZ and I think the mild climate has a lot to do with that, [cont.]

How is the job market for economists and finance professionals in New Zealand?
Q. How is the New Zealand economy currently doing and how is the job market in the area of finance? I am from US and I will be doing a PhD in Economics in Wellington. I also want to do some consulting work in accounting and finance while working on my research. Thanks. For Accounting, do you necessarily have to have NZ accounting certification, or a CPA from US will do?

A. You're going to Victoria University in Wellington? Ask your supervising Professor, he or she is probably best qualified to answer that. It will also depend on whether your visa allows you to work in those fields. Generally though, I would think that's a pretty tight market at the moment. To work in accounting in NZ you would need to have NZ accounting certification. EDIT: About the accounting requirements. You may want to contact the NZ Institute of Chartered Accountants for more details. You will need NZ certification for many accountancy roles (which would require an exam) because of the legal aspect. In some cases you may not. The institute will be able to give you full details. Good luck!
