The concept of personhood (who is a person within a society) is the fundamental component of any selective concept of people. A distinction is maintained in philosophy and law between the notions "human being", or "man", and "person". The former refers to the species, while the latter refers to a rational agent (see, for example, John Locke's Essay concerning Human Understanding II 27 and Immanuel Kant's Introduction to the Metaphysic of Morals). Central issues of interest to people are the understanding of the human condition and the meaning of life, and survival. Religion, philosophy, and science show or represent modes and aspects of inquiry which attempt to investigate and understand the nature, behavior, and purpose of people. Sociology, economics, and politics represent modes by which people investigate how to maximize a collective survival strategy.

Islam recognizes the People of the Book as members of monotheistic faiths founded upon revelation related to its own faith. By contrast, in Judaism, the Jews are often said to be the chosen people, a concept modified by the Christian doctrine of the Elect.

Why people are giving only archaeological values to the relics of saints?
Q. They are not kept in ice or herbs or something like that. And there were other people(monks) buryed in the same place as the relics of saints and they have rotted. There is no logical explanation for this. Why people say that there must be an logic explanation ? Is not that a cover for the their wish not to believe? I live in a country where there are relics of saints. So I have more information than people that are not religious. Why many people are telling their opinion even thety don tknow much about it?

A. Such individuals (archaeologists) do not believe in God hence they cannot believe in anything supernatural. However if we are not temples of the Holy Spirit what do we become temples for? These individuals that do not believe in God, better known as atheists, that have become temples of the unholy spirit, cannot rid themselves of the burning questions regarding the origins of life. They look for explanations from a purely human context following the erroneous theories of those who came before; individuals such as Darwin, Huxley and a host of others. Darwin would admit privately that there is no evidence to support his erroneous belief...that's why it remained as a theory. Huxley, on the other hand, a great supporter of Darwin, but much to… [cont.]

How many people do you need to maintain genetic diversity?
Q. Imagine that a group of people separates from the civilized world. How many different individuals would be needed to maintain genetic diversity, supposing that none of them are related? In other words, this is the essential last two people on the world scenario. Obviously, you need more than just two people to repopulate the world, but how many?

People keep asking me when I am going to start a family, what is the best reply to this?
Q. I am tired of people always asking me when I am going to have kids, I do want them, but when my partner and I are financially secure and out of debt. I am only 30. I am fed up of people asking and when I reply for this reason, they throw other things at me, such as my time is running out etc. I hate it and am loosing patience. What is a witty retort to this question?

A. Tell them you wouldn't have given it a thought if they hadn't asked but you will consider it sometime. Best wishes. UK

Quotes about people

  • A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals, and you know it.
  • Show me a man or a woman alone and I'll show you a saint. Give me two and they'll fall in love. Give me three and they'll invent the charming thing we call 'society'. Give me four and they'll build a pyramid. Give me five and they'll make one an outcast. Give me six and they'll reinvent prejudice. Give me seven and in seven years they'll reinvent warfare. Man may have been made in the image of God, but human society was made in the image of His opposite number, and is always trying to get back home.
    • Glen Bateman, The Stand (C&U), 3rd paragraph of Chapter 42, by Stephen King
  • I judge people by what they might be,—not are, nor will be.
  • The people will live on. The learning and blundering people will live on.
    • Carl Sandburg (1878–1967), American poet. The People, Yes (1936)

  • We have to continually be jumping off cliffs and developing our wings on the way down.
  • Our awareness is all that is alive and maybe sacred in any of us. Everything else about us is dead machinery.
