How many hours of homework should an 8th grade honors student get in the US?
Q. I am an 8th grade honors student (my honors science teaches 2 years worth of science in one, earth science and physics, and I am in 9th grade honors math). My homework takes anywhere from 3 hours to 10 hours, depending on how much I have. Is this normal? Or is my school crazy? I go to a public school, but it's ranked quite high on CAT scores. All my friends take this long also, and we're all drinking coffee and Pepsi (because it has caffeine) because we have to stay awake. I have no time just to hang out somewhere, or play video games at my friend's house, or anything. I gave up playing PC games, and I love PC games- all I want now is some time with my friends. So, is this normal or NOT?

A. That is soo normal. When I was in middle school, it was normal to study and do homework every night for one hour per class. I had nine subjects that I was taking, and I would get home at 3:00pm and wouldn't go to be until 12:00, if I was lucky. High school is a lot better, usually. So, keep your chin up since by working hard now, it'll pay off later. Trust me :D

How can I get motivated to do my homework as soon as I get home from school?
Q. My school finishes at 3.20 and I get home at around 4. I usually take a nice long show then sit round on the computer and eat for the next 2 hours. I then end staying up to mid night finishing my homework. I really want to get out of this habit this year. Any ideas on how I could do it? Also what time do you think is a good time to start my homework?

A. Hi Rose, Go straight to your study area and leave you satchel nearby. Place a Sign over your study area with this message written on it. "My Homework is the Key to my Future Success" Shower and have a snack (not for two hours!) then commence your studies. Remember, you are investing in your future. Discipline is a wonderful skill to cultivate and making out a timetable that you promise yourself to work-to would be great. Our life is caught up in time, and when we waste our time, we waste our ??? You can do it.

How do I get into the habit of doing homework straight after school?
Q. I used to be very conscientious but then it all fell apart and I dont get to homework till 6, sometimes 7. A lot of the time I'm eating, watching TV, playing on the computer. Sometimes Im cleaning my room or jogging (I dont jog when its sunny, hence the later times) I also need to STUDY!!! But Its very hard to kick myself into a good homework habit. What do you suggest?

A. You don't have to do homework right after school...you can take a break or rest for a while, or even eat dinner first, then get to work after an hour. Once you start, make sure you finish the job! If you can, finish everything before playing, but if not, try to fit whatever you can in an hour or so, then take a break and continue it when you can. Also, try not to find excuses to escape doing homework- tell yourself that once its over, you're free. Haha. Whatever you decide to do to make yourself do school stuff, make sure you stick to that...Hope you get to doing well soon!=)
