From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Alabama /ˌæləˈbæmə/ (help·info) is a state located in the southern region of the United States of America. It is bordered by Tennessee to the north, Georgia to the east, Florida and the Gulf of Mexico to the south, and Mississippi to the west. Alabama ranks 30th in total land area and ranks second in the size of its inland waterways. The state ranks 23rd in population with almost 4.6 million residents in 2006. From the American Civil War until World War II, Alabama, like many Southern states, suffered economic hardship, in part because of continued dependence on agriculture. White rural interests dominated the state legislature until the 1960s, while urban interests and African Americans were underrepresented. Following World War II, Alabama experienced significant recovery as the economy of the state transitioned from agriculture to diversified interests in heavy manufacturing, mineral extraction, education, and technology, as well as the establishment or expansion of multiple military installations, primarily those of the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force. The state has heavily invested in aerospace, education, health care, and banking, and various heavy industries including automobile manufacturing, mineral extraction, steel production and fabrication. Alabama is unofficially nicknamed the Yellowhammer State, which is also the name of the state bird. Alabama is also known as the "Heart of Dixie". The state tree is the Longleaf Pine, the state flower is the Camellia. The capital of Alabama is Montgomery, and the largest city by population is Birmingham. The largest city by total land area is Huntsville. The oldest city is Mobile. From Wikipedia under the

They were still bigger than the Mississippi first string but Ole Miss was hanging tough. Sports writer Everett Strupper, of the Atlanta Journal, wrote "At the end of the (first) quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, 'Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,' and out stamped this Alabama varsity." Several other writers referred to the Alabama linemen Red Elephants and the name stuck. That is how Alabama came to be associated with elephants. Now, the Crimson Tide mascot is an elephant fittingly named Big Al. Answered by 4kids2pay4 - Sun Nov 9 09:10:41 2008 Where can I find a good recording of an Alabama accent? Q. My son is playing Dill in a production of "To Kill A Mockingbird" and we need to find some Alabama dialogue tapes/CD's. Any clue as to where to find them? We're from West Texas, so I know the Alabama accent is drawn out a bit more and is not as harsh as a Texan accent. Asked by Counselor - Fri Mar 30 21:11:21 2007 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. Most Southern accents in movies are so overdone. Being a Southerner I find the accents very broad and somewhat offensive. Here's my view: The Southern accent is not so very different. We do tend to relax our vowel sounds with lots of dipthongs! A first step wold be to take it nice and slow. Some of the best Southern accents were used in the old Andy Griffith tv series. Most of the actors were Southerners and while the show is a comedy, the characters are very real. If you can a find a video of the stage play greater tuna, the two actors - Joe Sears and Jaston Williams - each play a variety of characters and are dead on the nose! Best of luck!
