Inhabited by Native American populations for many centuries, it has also been part of the Imperial Spanish viceroyalty of New Spain, part of Mexico, and a U.S. territory. Among U.S. states, New Mexico has the highest percentage of Hispanics at 45% (2008 estimate), being descendants of Spanish colonists and recent immigrants from Latin America. It also has the third-highest percentage of Native Americans after Alaska and Oklahoma, and the fifth-highest total number of Native Americans after California, Oklahoma, Arizona, and Texas. The tribes represented in the state consist of mostly Navajo and Pueblo peoples. As a result, the demographics and culture of the state are unique for their strong Spanish, Mexican, and Native American cultural influences. At a population density of 16 per square mile, New Mexico is the sixth most sparsely inhabited U.S. state. From Wikipedia under the

How do I become a resident of New Mexico so I can save money going to New Mexico State University? Thanks for answering. Asked by algidstorm - Mon Nov 3 17:14:32 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. This works in almost all states: 1) move to New Mexico and rent/buy a place to live. 2) get a NM driver's license/insurance and register to vote in your new district. 3) get a job in your new town (in NM) and pay income tax to NM. do this for a year and viola! you're a resident. Careful though - many schools will declare you to be a resident of whatever your parent's home is unless you qualify as an independent student. Most college students don't qualify as independent.
