Asia is the world's largest and most populous continent. It covers 8.6% of the earth's total surface area (or 29.9% of its land area) and, with approximately 4 billion people, it hosts 60% of the world's current human population. It is located in the eastern and northern hemispheres.

Asia is traditionally defined as part of the landmass of Eurasia — with the western portion of the latter occupied by Europe — located to the east of the Suez Canal, east of the Ural Mountains and south of the Caucasus Mountains and the Caspian and Black Seas. It is bounded on the east by the Pacific Ocean, on the south by the Indian Ocean and on the north by the Arctic Ocean. Given its size and diversity, Asia — a toponym dating back to classical antiquity — is more a cultural concept incorporating a number of regions and peoples than a homogeneous physical entity (see Subregions of Asia, Asian people).

The wealth of Asia differs widely between and within each region. This is due to its vast size and huge range of different cultures, environments, historical ties and government systems. In terms of nominal GDP, Japan has the largest economy on the continent and the second largest in the world. In purchasing power parity term, however, the People's Republic of China has the largest economy in Asia and the second largest in the world.

Why is Europe considered a separate continent while India is considered part of Asia?
Q. Europe and Asia have been together for much longer than India and Asia and the boundary between Europe and Asia is less substantial than the boundary between India and Asia. KT Dyke: did you just make that up or do you have some support for your statement?

A. The accepted boundaries of Europe and Asia came about for cultural reasons, not essentially geographic. It began with the ancient Greeks who recognised a boundary between their cultures and others in Asia Minor. As the geography of the region became more understood, the arbitrary division of Europe and Asia extended along cultural lines, between societies viewed as 'Asian' or 'European'. Some of the boundaries follow geographic features such as mountain ranges and lakes, but that's because it also it marked tribal boundaries. The accepted boundaries were established before the advent of modern geology and the understanding of plate tectonics.

Why is Europe and Asia two diffrent continents while they are on the same land?
Q. Even from a geological point of view, Europe and Asia share the same tectonic plate... So how come they're not one really big continent?

A. The reason these two countries share the same land mass but are considered to be two distinct continents is pretty baffling, I guess. However, one explanation is that centuries ago, these nations' leaders decided that since the people that reside in these two countries (Europe and Asia) are just as distinct and dissimilar as the countries themselves, that they might as well, for political necessity, say that Europe and Asia are two distinct continents. So, the decision to call designate Europe and Asia as two continents, though they share the same land mass, was much more of a political decision than it was a geographical one.

A. I would say the pulitzer prize for photography has to be right up there with the best. You would certainly get worldwide recognition if you were to win.
