Europe (/ˈjʊərəp/) is, by convention, one of the world's seven continents. Comprising the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, Europe is generally divided from Asia to its east by the water divide of the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian Sea, the Caucasus Mountains (or the Kuma-Manych Depression), and the Black Sea to the southeast. Europe is bordered by the Arctic Ocean and other bodies of water to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Black Sea and connected waterways to the southeast. Yet the borders for Europe—a concept dating back to classical antiquity—are somewhat arbitrary, as the term continent can refer to a cultural and political distinction or a physiographic one.

Europe is the world's second-smallest continent by surface area, covering about 10,180,000 square kilometres (3,930,000 sq mi) or 2% of the Earth's surface and about 6.8% of its land area. Of Europe's approximately 50 states, Russia is the largest by both area and population, while the Vatican City is the smallest. Europe is the third most populous continent after Asia and Africa, with a population of 731 million or about 11% of the world's population; however, according to the United Nations (medium estimate), Europe's share may fall to about 7% by 2050. In 1900, Europe's share of the world's population was 25%.

Europe, in particular Ancient Greece, is the birthplace of Western culture. It played a predominant role in global affairs from the 16th century onwards, especially after the beginning of colonialism. Between the 16th and 20th centuries, European nations controlled at various times the Americas, most of Africa, Oceania, and large portions of Asia. Both World Wars were ignited in Central Europe, greatly contributing to a decline in European dominance in world affairs by the mid-20th century as the United States and Soviet Union took prominence. During the Cold War Europe was divided along the Iron Curtain between NATO in the West and the Warsaw Pact in the East. European integration led to the formation of the Council of Europe and the European Union in Western Europe, both of which have been expanding eastward since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.

How did Europe come to be defined as a distinct entity, apart from, say, Asia or Africa?
Q. The Creation of the West: Consider the formation of the geographical and ideological boundaries of Western Civilization. How did Europe come to be defined as a distinct entity, apart from, say, Asia or Africa? Consider both the political consolidation of Europe from ancient times through the Medieval period, and the ideological (and religious) constitution of European identity from the classical period through the Renaissance. To what extent was the idea of the West founded on an internal heritage, and to what extent did it depend upon the presence of populations defined as fundamentally alien?

A. I'm not European, I don't plan on being European, but my guess is it starts with geography. Europe lies West of the Urals in the Russian landscape, separating the Ukraine from the Eastern part of Russia. Languages are different, all a dialect from Latin which was prevalent under Roman rule (est 800BC to 400AD). The people are lighter skinned than the people in Asia and Africa, they have different religions as well.

Whats the cheapeset city to fly to in Europe on Continental Airlines?
Q. My friend and I are planning on spending a month in Europe this summer. We have airmiles, so we have to fly Continental. There isn't an option of just saying, give me the cheapest flight to anywhere in Europe, so its very tedious to go through, trying every city and every date. So far, London seems best. Anyone know of another, cheaper, destination. We are flexible. The airmiles will only cover one of us

A. Continental sometimes have good mile specials to Dusseldorf. Be aware that you can also use Continental miles to book Delta and Northwest flights. While that gives you even more options, it does make finding the lowest available reward seat and cheapest flight a more difficult task. Northwest has a good--easy month-by month--reward availability search that shows Continental and Delta. Maybe try their's at NWA.com to track down the cheapest reward miles routes, then go to Continental to book it. Usually, new service cities that aren't filling seats will get their price reduced and open up mileage seats. Also check for Bristol, Shannon, Hamburg, Lisbon, Stockholm, and Geneva.

What are some tips on saving money while traveling Europe?
Q. Besides eating cheaply, because it is Europe! The food is amazing I want to eat my brains out there! Food is half the reason i am going to Europe!
Asked by Bulah Z - Sun Nov 25 14:17:49 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First, eastern Europe is much cheaper than the west. Mostly it is cheaper to stay in smaller towns, the capital of the country is mostly the most expensive town by far, but in the big towns you can often also find real bargains if you look well, in small towns there are fewer extremely cheap places. Hostels, bus travel and cheap airlines for the long distances, but book early for cheap bus and plane tickets. If you love your food, have a good cooked lunch, and keep the dinners low profile, like the small eateries or get some bread and toppings in specialist stores like the butchers. Quality you do not get anywhere else.

Divisions of Europe

  • I have ever deemed it fundamental for the United States never to take active part in the quarrels of Europe. Their political interests are entirely distinct from ours... They are nations of eternal war.
  • Whoever lights the torch of war in Europe can wish for nothing but chaos.
  • You know what the funniest thing about Europe is? It’s the little differences.
