New Zealand is an island country in the south-western Pacific Ocean comprising two main landmasses (commonly called the North Island and the South Island), and numerous smaller islands, most notably Stewart Island/Rakiura and the Chatham Islands. The indigenous Māori named New Zealand Aotearoa, commonly translated as The Land of the Long White Cloud. The Realm of New Zealand also includes the Cook Islands and Niue (self-governing but in free association); Tokelau; and the Ross Dependency (New Zealand's territorial claim in Antarctica). New Zealand is notable for its geographic isolation: it is situated about 2000 km (1250 miles) southeast of Australia across the Tasman Sea, and its closest neighbours to the north are New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga. During its long isolation New Zealand developed a distinctive fauna dominated by birds, a number of which became extinct after the arrival of humans and the mammals they introduced. The population of New Zealand is mostly of European descent; the indigenous Māori are the largest minority. Asians and non-Māori Polynesians are also significant minority groups, especially in urban areas. The most commonly spoken language is English. New Zealand is a developed country that ranks highly in international comparisons on human development, quality of life, life expectancy, literacy, public education, peace, prosperity, economic freedom, ease of doing business, lack of corruption, press freedom, and the protection of civil liberties and political rights. Its cities also consistently rank among the world's most liveable. Elizabeth II, as the Queen of New Zealand, is the country's head of state and is represented by a ceremonial Governor-General who holds reserve powers. The Queen has no real political influence, and her position is essentially symbolic. Political power is held by the democratically elected Parliament of New Zealand under the leadership of the Prime Minister, who is the head of government. From Wikipedia under the

I'm an American citizen and I'm planning on becoming a nurse (not sure about whether I'll be RN or NP though). I've considered moving to New Zealand someday, probably a few years after finishing school. What requirements will I have to fulfill to be able to become a nurse in New Zealand once I already have proper training for the US? Tests, more school, etc...? Thanks for any information! Once you have the documentation they want, and it seems no matter how thorough you are, there is always something else they want, you will have to do a competency assessment programme. This is a 6 or 8 week course (depending on where you do it) and it basically prepares you to work as a nurse in New Zealand, as well as giving them an idea that you really are a nurse and you know what you are doing. You will have to pay for this course, and if you are on a temporary work visa and not a permanent resident, it will cost anywhere from $3400 to $4500. You don't get any type of reimbursement for this course. Q. I am a canadian backpacking in New Zealand for 4 weeks. I'm just not sure how much money I am going to need to live there for a month. I am planning on doing lots of traveling and staying in hostels. Any suggestions? Thankyou! Asked by luckynumber2 - Fri Jan 4 12:33:35 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I'm a Canuck, and I lived in Wellington NZ for about six months a couple of years ago... They have some great hostels (especially on the south island) that are reasonably priced... I'd say that three grand would be enough for everything... Taxes are included in the sticker price on all merchandise there! If you enjoy hiking...I would HIGHLY recommend doing the Mt. Tongariro Hike...the one I did was 17km and took us about six hours to do...it's VERY popular and has amazing natural scenery! We stayed at a hostel the night before and were picked up by a tour company which drops you off at one end of the Mnt and picks you up on the other end!! (But don't do it if you are going to be there in their winter months)... Feel free to send me… [cont.] Answered by Kate - Sat Jan 5 03:35:27 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "New Zealand" New Zealand is a country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean comprising two large islands (the North Island and the South Island) and numerous smaller islands.
