What is the molarity of the sulfuric acid in this question?
Q. A 11.40 mL sample of sulfuric acid from an automobile battery requires 34.00 mL of 1.92 M sodium hydroxide solution for complete neutralization. What is the molarity of the sulfuric acid? Sulfuric acid contains two acidic hydrogens.
Asked by missrr1 - Wed Feb 11 02:26:45 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First, you need moles of sodium hydroxide: (.034 L)(1.92 M) = .06528 moles To neutralize this, you'll need an equal amount of moles (.06528) of sulfuric acid. So, to determine molarity of sulfuric acid, use: (.06528 moles)/(.01140 L) = 5.726 M sulfuric acid

When the metal Aluminum is mixed with Nitric aid or sulfuric acid why doesnt it produce a reaction?
Q. When the Metal zinc is mixed with Sufuric acid why does no noticeable changes occur? When Copper is mixed with Hydrocholoric acid, Nitric acid, and sulfuric acid out of all there none of the mixtures showed a noticeable change why is that?

A. sulfuric acid is just a strong acid for the first dissociation thereby giving it just singly negative charge. zinc is 2+ cation therefore it cannot form strong ionic bond with HSO4- . In case of copper not reacting with nitric acid, or HCl , is due to the lw activity of copper metal with respect to H , this is based on the activity series of metal , you may wish to review this. or try to find the series from other websites or books. hope that helps. have a nice day . =>

Q. Im in a automotive class to brush up on new technology and we have a project on doing the most possible damage with one thing to a car?? i wanted to know what 40% sulfuric acid(pool acid) would do if put in a gas tank and run through a car??? thought it was a good one any answers???/

A. 40% H2SO4 would probably corrode most if not all of the surfaces it came into contact with, which, while I'm not a car person, I imagine would do a significant amount of damage to the engine and fuel system. Other things I've heard that are rough on cars - Sugar in the gas tank (it caramelizes when it heats up), or thermite (A combination of rusted iron and powdered aluminum that when ignited can burn as hot as 4000 deg F - almost hot enough to boil the aluminum)

Liquid sulfuric acid poor conductor but sulfuric acid solution good conductor?
Q. Account for the differences in conductivity between samples of liquid (concentrated) sulfuric acid and sulfuric acid solution. I'm given that liquid sulfuric acid is a poor conductor, while a water solution of sulfuric acid is a good conductor; I just need to explain it.
Asked by Sorrin - Tue Jan 6 15:42:58 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. liquid sulphuric acid has molecules of H2SO4. aqueous sulphuric acid has these molecules ionised into H+ and SO4 2- . ions can conduct especially in the solution as they are free.(other particles that conduct are the electrons, as in metals) molecules have neither free ions or free electrons

Testing reactivity of metals using sulfuric acid?
Q. i tested for the reactivity of metals using sulfuric acid.. what does the acid do? and does it matter if i use another acid instead of sulfuric?
Asked by melanie_61 - Sat Mar 28 04:38:54 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you are using DILUTE sulphuric acid, you are testing to see if the metal will displace H+(aq) from solution as H2. Any strong acid will do. A typical reaction is Zn(s) + 2 H+(aq) --> Zn2+(aq) + H2 This kind of reaction will work if the metal is above hydrogen in the reactivity series. If you are using concentrated sulphuric acid, that is another matter. For example, copper will not dissolve in dilute acid, or in concentrated HCl, but will dissolve on heating in concentrated sulphuric acid, reducing the acid to SO2, and in concentrated nitric acid, reducing it to NO2.

Is it possible to dilute a large spill of concentrated sulfuric acid?
Q. Acid should always be added to water, and not the reverse. So lets say there has been a humongous spillage of sulfuric acid in a chemical plant. Is it possible to reduce the potential damage by diluting the acid? Or would that be impossible since the acid cannot be added to the water (We can only add water to the acid because its a spill...)? Is there any way to dilute the acid? Safely...?
Asked by Greyskiescheermeup - Wed Mar 4 08:51:17 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The problem is the intense generation of heat that comes from adding water to acid. Probably the better course of action would be to neutralize the solution with a bicarbonate solution or foam.

The difference in reactivity between hydrochloric and sulfuric acid?
Q. How come sulfuric acid reacts more vigorously with magnesium than hydrochloric acid? - what is the science behind it?
Asked by Razzledazzle010 - Tue Dec 16 13:20:53 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. HCl is the stronger acid (pKa=-6). The pKa of H2SO4 is -3. Based on acidity constants I would expect HCl to react more vigorously. On the other hand H2SO4 has two acidic groups (and protons to loose) to react with. At equal molarity sulfuric acid has twice as much "acid" to react with. Maybe that's the reason why.

What is the concentration of the unknown sulfuric acid solution?
Q. A 15.00 mL sample of unknown concentration of sulfuric acid is precititated with excess lead(II) nitrate and a precipate of lead (II) sulfate is collected. The dried sample of PbSO4 has a mass of 5.354 grams. What is the concentration of the unknown sulfuric acid solution
Asked by csu0811 - Mon Dec 11 18:19:35 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Begin off by writing a chemical equation: H2SO4+ PbSO4 ---> [ something ] List your givens for PbS04 m = 5.354g M = Pb + S + 4O = 207.2g/mol + 32.06g/mol + 4(16.00g/mol) = 303.26 g/mol n = m/M = 5.354g/303.26g/mol = 0.0176mol The mol of PbSO4 is about 0.0176mol, and you know that the mol ratio of HCl: PbSO4 is 1:1 , therefore, to find concentration of HCl, you have to use the equation, C= n/v n = 0.0176mol v = 15.00mL = 0.015L C = ? C = n/v = 0.0176mol / 0.015L = 1.17 mol/L Therefore, the concentration of the unknown sulfuric acid is about 1.17 mol/L Hope that helps =]

A. I believe you are talking about Fischer Esterification. The acid is a catalyst. It reacts with the carbonyl oxygen in order to make a carbocation intermediate which is then open to attack from the alcohol oxygen.

Why should appoximately 20ml of 1M sulfuric acid be added to the fetilizer solution before it is titrated?
Q. Why should appoximately 20ml of 1M sulfuric acid be added to the fetilizer solution before it is titrated with potassium permanganate solution. Why is the acid added Is it so that oxidation and reduction can occur so the concentration of Iron ions can be concentrated?
Asked by Willis B - Mon Apr 7 09:38:43 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Pottasium permanganate undergoes reduction in presence of both acidic and basic conditions. in acidic conditions we get Mn2+ ions formed which are colourless and easy to observe. incase of KMnO4 in basic condition the reduction takes place with formation of MnO2 and MnO2 is a brownish precipitate so it becomes difficult to observe the end point. in case of acidic condition this problem is not faced as before end point the colour of solution is clear and with one drop of KMnO4 the colour changes to pink showing all KMnO4 have been used up. now to give the acidic medium we add H2SO4 . we cannot add HCl cuz then the HCl gets oxidized to Cl2 gas and the titration doesnt remain quantitative. so all in all we add 1 M H2SO4 as acidic medium… [cont.]

What are the effects of breathing in sulfuric acid?
Q. My husband bought a drain cleaner called Liquid Fire that is a concentrated form of sulfuric acid. He said we would probably have to wait until the kids were out of the house. I asked him if it was because it smelled bad, and he said "Yeah.". I told him we should at least wait until the kids went to bed. So the kids are in bed, and he used it. The whole front prtion of our house smells like this stuff. This was an hour ago. At the moment I am dizzy from breathing it and feel like I am going to vomit. I read the label and it says nothing about any harmful effects of breathing the fumes, only skin contact and eye contact, and swallowing. So what's going on? Is it really safe to be breathing this? Anyone know anything about sulfuric acid?
Asked by Lindsey H - Tue Mar 6 23:50:56 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Breathing in sulfuric acid can cause minor respiratory problems, but the acid's gas particles may cause tooth erosion. You should keep your children far away from the area you used it because children have a higher sensitivity to sulfuric acid. Children breathe in more air a day than adults because they have smaller airways. I suggest you open ALL the windows and doors.
