A. I'm hoping you mean Sunni and Shia' otherwise, please disregard my answer. So... I'll try to be brief in my history lesson here. At first there was only one kind of Islam, this was are the 600s,give or take a few years. Then, after the death of the prophet Muhammad (saw) and the first 3 rightly-guided khalifas who suceeded him in ruling of the Muslim empire, there was a dispute, called the First Fitnah. The previous khalifa had been murdered, and when election for the next khalifa were being held, one candidate (the prophet's (saw) cousin, Ali) did not want to take revenge, while the other (I think his name was Mua'wiyah) did. So their two sides battled and Ali (as) became the next khalifa. A group was formed, the supporters or friends… [cont.]
