What technology shows hidden bodily fluids in a room?
Q. On the "Monk" episode, "Mr. Monk Takes a Vacation," a crime scene detective uses some kind of machine that makes all sort of bodily fluids show up around the hotel room, which of course completely freaks Mr. Monk out. What kind of technology is this and how does it work? I've seen black lights advertised to show up hidden pet urine, but I tried it and it didn't work--maybe because it was on wooden floors and brick instead of carpet. Thanks for the info.

A. I'm a new driver and my parents won't let me go anywhere without a cell phone for safety reasons. We have cut back on cable tv and we are also considering completely eliminating our home phone since my mom, dad, sister and I all have cell phones. Another thing we're doing is just trying to be conscience of simple things like turning off the lights, turning down the thermostat, using less hot water and car pooling. Haven't seen a huge difference yet but it's kind of taking the financial edge off. We can't eliminate our internet because I'm taking online classes and also do most of my work over the internet. Q. I'm in grade 12 and I want to know what education I need to get into an IT career. I live in Toronto, Canada and there are only 2 Universities (outside the city) that offer a Bachelor of Information Technology. There are three colleges in my area that offer diplomas for Systems Technology, Systems Technician, Information Systems Business Analyst, and Networking. Is it better to get a diploma from college or a degree to get started in information technology? Is there any other way of starting an IT career?

How can technology help you save money during tough times?
Q. Given the state of the world's economy, people are looking to reduce costs any way they can. While technology may seem like an expense (in terms of buying computers and peripherals or mobile phones), there are actually many ways in which using technology can help you save -- for example, using a webcam instead of a landline phone. How do you think technology can help you reduce costs during this recession? Thanks to everyone for their excellent suggestions on how to save money by embracing technology. A. Having internet access allows you to email family and friends and use live chat instead of mailing letters which wastes paper or instead of using a phone. You can go to coupon saving sites and get different coupons. www.save.ca is one site. And you can go to this site at the beginning of every week and pick different products to get coupons for. I save on diapers for my daughter by joining huggies site. They mail me coupons for money off the purchase of huggies wipes and diapers. www.flyermall.com is a site that you can go to to view the flyers for grocery stores and clothing stores, places like that. That way you can see what deals are on in that store and save more money instead of going to the store. I always make a list… [cont.]

I have a hard time thinking about this because Im so immersed and familiar in the technology we already have, so its hard to imagine. Its like asking, what would technology be like on an alien planet without electricity? Sort of. Its all just speculation but please give me something feasible that I can imagine. A. Electricity has two main functions. One is for digital switching which makes computers possible. The other is as a power source. Remember, we use electricity in almost every type of technology. While chemical reactions and photons are both capable of supplying energy, storing memory, and performing binary operations, electricity is probably 1000x more efficient than chemical reactions or photons. The probability that a civilization would reach a level of technology anywhere near ours and not have discovered (and adopted) electricity is very small. However, there is the possibility that a civilization far more advanced than ours may have little need for electricity because they have discovered better alternatives, such as photons (whic [cont.]

A. I'm sure that their program is fine. However, suggest that you explore alternatives as well. It is important to look into all possible paths toward your goals before you commit to anything. A university program will often cost much more than training at a typical flight school, and there isn't much advantage to going to an aviation university because at the end of the day, a pilot certificate is a pilot certificate and hours are hours, no matter where you got them. In addition, many people recommend getting a degree outside of aviation to diversify your experiences and to serve as a backup plan. A. Live view on an DSLR. It was done several years ago with the Oly E-300, not done and then re-introduced in by Olympus (they were the first ones to do it). Even most SLR users don't know about it. It's pretty nifty if you need to make sure you have sharp focus on a hard to judge shot but it cannot make the noise factor heat up. Not something to use everyday but when you need it, I imagine it would be a great thing to have.

A. Well I forget what it's called but they found a living cell organism that uses sunlight to basically fuel itself. These solar panels are on their skin but they are so tiny (microscopic). We're finding a way to get their skins and use billions of them to actually use it like a solar panel. If we can keep doing that (while still not endangering that cell species of course, because then if they went extinct we wouldn't be able to use them anymore) then that would be a good way to harvest the sun's energy to use to light up homes. (maybe it's not very effective [just lighting up that home] but still, it's easy to get, and if it's easy, well, we'll use it more.)

A. The only well-known upcoming change is the iPhone. While there are several phones that have had MP3-capability crammed into them, I've yet to hear of one that plays music as well as a dedicated player. The iPhone will essentially be the largest Nano with a phone built around it, so the sound quality should be significantly improved (provided, of course, you don't insist on using the horrible stock earbuds). Of course, that's still assuming that you actually want one device to serve double duty. Other than that, the only sure bets right now are smaller size and larger capacity. Everything else would either be speculation or a likely breach of someone's non-disclosure agreement.

Q. Advances in cell theory were totally dependent on the invention of the microscope. While there was indirect evidence for cells, we needed an apparatus to view them. It is likely that someone else would have invented the microscope later, but the advances in cell theory would have only come after this invention. OFA & Penn Hip for hip classifications, also for elbow. Thyroid testing, Testing for VwD, all kinds of blood screenings if it applies to your breed. Testing for STD's which dogs can have and carry and result in dead pups or deformed pups, or death of pups. DNA for testing for paternity testing and for record keeping of a particular stud. Ultra sounds for a variety of diagnoses when the pups are in utero. X-rays too! Just about anything a human can have checked for so can a dog now!
