What do tessellations have to do with maths?
Q. I learn about tessellations in maths class, but what does it have to do with maths? It does not have any calculations or formulas in it, but why is it still counted as maths???

A. I'm not good with geometry or spacial stuff so I am sure someone else will be ble to explain the math to you. All I can really tell you is that there is much more to tessellations than just making pretty patterns, there is actually a lot of math behind it. -- but the good news is, you don't necessarily need the math to make the patterns. ;-)

The angle between sides of a regular n-gon is: 180 - 360/n If this is evenly divisible by 360, then you can tessalate the n-gon. 3-gon 180 - 360/3 = 180 - 120 = 60 360/60 = 6 A 3-gon (equilateral triangle) can be tesselated with 6 triangles meeting at each vertex. ___ 6-gon 180 - 360/6 = 180 - 60 = 120 360/120 = 3 A 6-gon (regular hexagon) can be tesselated with 3 hexagons meeting at each vertex. ___ 8-gon 180 - 360/8 = 180 - 45 = 135 360/135 = 8/3 This is not an integer. An octagon cannot be tesselated.

A. Tessellations are inherently geometric, because they are a collection of a few geometric figures that will tile a plane (flat surface) without any gaps or overlaps. Due to these last conditions, the lines and angles of these shapes have to line up just so! That's why only the simplest tessellations consisting of using one regular polygon is one of three possibilities: the equilateral triangle, the square, or the regular hexagon. Trouble with knowledge of tessellations: Where are they useful/used for in the world?
Q. I have a stupid question in school... "Where do tessellations exist in the world? This does not necessarily ask geographically where; instead, we want to know where they are useful, where they are used, etc." I did all the research the school provided, and my own from the web, but I can't find any info relating to this... can someone help? :/ clothing would work, but the definition of tessellations doesn't allow the patterns to overlay each other.

A. I would have to say that they are used much when building and designing things, especially buildings. I mean hello tile flooring. Also like brick patterns. I would also like to think that they are found when designing clothing, I mean it just makes sense to me that they would be used in that sort of world.

A. Tesselations are patterns of shapes that fill a surface. The first poster is wrong. They are not useless. 3D computer games and 3D animation movies use tesselated surfaces of polygons to represent the shape of characters, objects, and surroundings. Tesselated surfaces are also used in 3D modeling of surfaces of objects in CAD/CAM when designing products for manufacture. Tesselations are also used to subdivide surfaces for mathematical analysis and simulations. They are also used in Art. M.C. Escher is famous for his tessellations.
