Skill: where can I find reading activities on finding themes from a reading selection?
Q. My sixth grade class is now finding the themes of short stories, however they are struggling with this skill. Are there activities any where on line that we can use?
Asked by Dot - Thu Oct 19 18:14:01 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I am student teaching Special Ed and found my students were having similar difficulties. One thing that really helped was calling it the main idea instead of the theme. When students are done reading a selection, they ask themselves "What is the most important part of this selection?" In younger grades I have seen teachers make worksheets after reading with the first item being a fill in the blank item like this: "The most important thing about (insert title here) is ___." Scholastic has a lot of books about this. Go to www.scholastic.com, then to Teacher Store, then type in "main idea". One book that looks really helpful is called Comprehension Mini-Lessons: Main Idea & Summarizing by Sarah J. Glasscock, LeAnn Nickelsen (grades 4-8)… [cont.]

Ideas for fun spirit week activities and themes?
Q. My niece's middle school is having a spirit week in a few weeks. They have to come up with ideas for theme days (for example, a pillow fight) and then an activity to do (like a three-legged race). My niece asked me for suggestions, but I couldn't think of anything very original. So if you can think of any fun, school appropriate, ideas for theme days or for activities,or that you remember as being really fun when you were in school, I would really appreciate your answers. Thank you, and have a great day!

A. get your friends to bring some blankets, make a picnic, and head down to the park and spend the day hanging out there. bring a stereo, some snacks, drinks, and some things like water guns, sports (tennis rackets, a football etc.) and anything else you think would make a good day. then head back to your house and have a BBQ, then the sleepover. you can do face masks, manicures, makeovers, dancing, karaoke, telling secrets, go online, movies, and games like truth or dare, would you rather..., MASH future etc. enjoy yourself, and have a good day!

A. Not sure if it is an event for children or adults, but you could do a turkey bean bag toss. Use ice cream buckets. Make the bean bags out of felt, cut into the shape of a turkey and sew together leaving a small hole to fill with rice, corn or whatever and sew small hole shut after filling, you could also do pin the nose on the pumpkin or pin the feather on the turkey...like pin the tail on the donkey. Also musical chairs works to songs of thankfulness. Good luck

A. Hi Laura Why not find some plants or sees that you can plant in the Autumn and teach the children about the importance of watering them to help them grow. You could also do a floating and sinking activity with them. Think of things that are around in the Autumn that float, for example leaves, fir cones (depending on the weight), and things that sink for example stones. I hope this helps you it is just a spare of the moment suggestion. Good luck with the activity. Bud

A. Prince/Princess Day - Dress up as royalty, have a tea party, make crowns with paper, glue and sparkles. Walk to the park with a net and try to catch frogs (Frog Prince). Watch a disney princess movie, or make sparkly cupcakes. Talk like royalty and try to be polite the whole day! Super Hero Day- Everyone should wear capes and come up with a name for themselves. (ie. Girly Girl, or Super Simon etc.) Tell them that today the mayor needs their help. The town is so dirty that it may explode. Take them with gloves into the neighbourhood and pickup trash at the park. Trim weeds and plant a garden. At last the City is Saved! Reward the super heroes with icecream or Icecream Soda floats. Animal Day- Make Animal Puppets using paper bags,… [cont.]
