A. You should consider taking a correspondence courses. Writing is something you will either dedicate yourself to or you will not. It is a hard job to have but also has plenty of rewards and I don't mean the money portion. Speaking of money, few writers really make money writing. Some make it big but most just make it. If you enjoy writing how about a journaling instead. On the other hand, if you really want to get serious about writing or at least see if it's something you can really do, start with night classes like your tech centers that offer them. Try creative writing courses such as fiction writing or article writing. BTW article writing is where you want to start when it comes to working your way to becoming a writer. This… [cont.]

What makes the process of writing philosophy papers different than that of other disciplines?
Q. Everyone says that writing about philosophy is a 'different sort of writing', but I'm not entirely sure what it meant by that. Of course, you're writing about philosophical texts and issues, but how is the actual process of writing any different than any other sort of academic writing?
Asked by kai_maguire - Sun Dec 7 17:50:53 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It is a different sort of writing because, more so than any other branch of the humanities, it is based around (in fact, entirely grounded upon) logic and maths. You cannot (or at least should not) persaude your reader with rhetoric. You must be infinitely careful, consistent and detailed in your definitions. Almost every statement should be reducable to a logical equation. In essence, a philosophy paper is really just an elaborate mathematical equation, with words substituted for numbers. In short, very different to any other discipline.

What are some tips to teach writing to elementary students with learning disabilities?
Q. I am a special education teacher and I believe I do well at creating a safe, orderly community within my classroom. I also have done a decent job of promoting student achievement in math and reading- decoding and comprehension. However, i struggle to get my students to produce quality writing pieces. We are supposed to teach the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing) in the workshop model. What kind of modifications can I make for them to be successful in writing and producing written work?
Asked by Fly girl - Mon Jan 21 19:11:13 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I think that the person who said to use the "brainstorming" piece of the writing process is correct. Poor writers have trouble inventing and organizing their ideas. By brainstorming, you will put several topics on the board that are generated by the students. The other thing that is very helpful for these learners is to use graphic organizers that will help organize their ideas, once they have them. Just put, "writing graphic organizers" in your search engine and you will find plenty at all levels. Many LD kids have various memory or processing deficits, so this keeps them on track. The other thing I did with my students was to prove to them that they spoke perfect English. I would challenge them to say a perfect sentence by telling me… [cont.]

Q. I need a business partner who is educated in the professional writing business. Preferably a female who is a visionary, creative and goal oriented. A male must likewise be honorably educated, loyal and intelligent in the professional writing field. I have successful goals and ideas. Having someone on my team with a mastermind quality would make for a very lucrative and successful contribution to the professional business writing industry. A. Start researching the Ezine sites where people submit their articles and stories for publication. Look for the folks who publish frequently and read them, you can gauge their intellect and inner motivation from their writing style. Then contact them directly through their email address to see if you can work together

Asked by Peace - Sat Jul 25 00:23:25 2009 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. First you need to ask yourself three things: 1.What musical background (if any) do you have? 2.What kind of song will it be? i.e. Power metal or soft rock? country or techno? 3.What will it say? Not just words but also the feelings expressed through the music like anger or joy. Then you simply go! Sometimes you write the actual music first then do the lyrics later. Or you could write lyrics with a tune in mind and then write it down and edit it later to make it sound better. There are no real rules set in stone. Just make sure it comes from the heart. Good luck!

How is the analytical writing portion of the GRE factored into the overall score?
Q. I just took the GRE and am wondering how scores are calculated. For admissions purposes, do grad schools just look at the combined verbal and quantitative or is it a combination of the writing, verbal and quantitative? The thing throwing me off is that the writing is scored on a scale of 0 to 6, while the verbal and quantitative ranges from 200 to 800. Most grad schools list a minimum score of 1000, but if that's the case, what happens to the writing score? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance to all who take the time to answer.

A. I'm not sure what you mean by research. People write in different ways. Some need an outline of the plot, others don't. Try writing an outline. If you can't come up with enough material for a book, then you need to do more thinking. There's research on writing, which can help you avoid getting halfway through your book and discovering you don't have enough plot or compelling characters. There's also books on historical details, technical details. If you're writing a crime novel, you need to have some idea of what police procedures are. Nothing is more stupid than a book with a hero/heroine with NO experience trying to chase down a murderer WITHOUT ever bothering to call the police. Equally tedious is a historical book where the… [cont.]

Q. The amount of detail used? Being able to identify with the characters? Real emotions? Creative wording? I don't mean what makes a story interesting (though many could say that the writing makes the story, and that's true, for the most part.) I mean the actual writing. Writers who feel the need to repeat and repeat and repeat. Oh, drives me bananas. I recall in Twilight (gotta love Meyer for managing be relevant in all kinds of questions) that she tended to remind me every five seconds that Edward had a crooked smile. It got irritating. I knew within the first two seconds of her describing him that he was gorgeous. I don't need constant re-utterances of his hair color and crooked smile to remember that he's hot as hell. What type of writing assignments can I expect in a College Composition course?

A. i had to write 2 personal essays, 4 research papers, a paper about assigned reading once a week, 2 personal experience/research papers. the longest one was 11 pages. also had to do some writing of the top of my head for like 5 minutes whenever the professor wanted the class to write. basically you write a little of everything so the school knows you are capable of writing. it is heavy on research papers because those will be all important in college. mostly they were between 2-6 pages plus the 11 page paper and an 8 page paper.

A. If you've never written before, then you must get your head around the basics of writing, The only real way to do that is study a text book on creative writing. There are many available, do a Google to find one that suits. If you don't, you'll have to spend years grappling with the rights and wrongs, and maybe not getting there in the end. A good creative book really will speed up the process. The next thing is to totally immerse yourself in the writing world. Join a writers group. A decent one is , they're free, friendly and will offer as much help as you require. Once you've finished your book you'll need to think about publishing. What are some tips for writing in the first person?
Q. I've written this novel that I've been working on... about four times in the third person. After this fourth time i realized... maybe its not something I need to change in the story, maybe it's all about perspective. Upon this realization (which I made all of six minutes ago) I decided to write in the first person. A big failure of the first four drafts (in the third person) was that readers could not get a feel for the character, or the character's emotions. What are some things i should remember while writing in the first person?

A. 1) Your character can't say what other characters are feeling. So you can't write: -- "I hate you!" I screamed. Phil was heartbroken at the words as tears burned out of his eyes. -- Your character can't know that Phil is heartbroken, she can only know what she feels and what she observes. -- "I hate you!" I screamed. Phil's expression froze, and tears spilled out of his eyes without him even blinking them out. -- See how all of Phil's description is external? Your character observes and makes judgments based on the observations. Your character can only guess how Phil feels. 2) Your character can't talk about things unless she is there to tell about them. You can't say: -- While I was at the supermarket, Tina came looking for me. Mom… [cont.]

I know it's important to give sources of where I would be getting my information and people I can interview. Should I find and contact possible sources prior to writing the query letter so I can give specific names of people, or just generally say "I am planning to interview doctors specializing in...?" Which is better and more effective? I'd love some advice from successful freelance writers, if possible. Thanks!
Asked by zapp_12 - Wed Jun 10 13:25:26 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Always set up interviews in advance and conduct the interviews. You might not need the interview this time, but the time you put in can be useful later on. Stating you have interviewed this list of experts on this topic is helpful. It shows you are prepared and serious. It will save the publisher time and effort. Give the name of the person interviewed, their job position and the date of the interview. Some fields change quickly and new breakthroughs can make an old interview useless. If the publisher shows any interest, ask them if there are any other interviews they want done for the piece. Calculate expenses for the interviews already done and any additional interviews the publisher requires.

Turn the place you write into an area of little no no access to said distractions. The basement, attic, wash room. Hell even sit in the bathtub and just have at it. That's what I do.

How does story telling techniques in fiction writing make non-fiction writing more imaginative?
Q. I am writing a media essay and I need help on how I could answer this: How does story telling techniques in fiction writing make non-fiction writing more imaginative? Thanks, I will choose the best answer!
Asked by Anotov - Sun Feb 15 12:50:19 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Non-fiction is limited to reality. The story telling techniques in fiction are not limited to what happened, but what the author wants to happen. A toaster can sing (personification), a man can walk 500miles in an hour (hyperbole), an annoying friend that follows you everywhere is a lost puppy (metaphor), etc. Non-fiction can be creative, memoir especially, but it is limited to the actions and thoughts of everyday life, not the possibilities.
