From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. An abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by the removal or expulsion from the uterus of a fetus/embryo, resulting in or caused by its death. An abortion can occur spontaneously due to complications during pregnancy or can be induced, in humans and other species. In the context of human pregnancies, an abortion induced to preserve the health of the gravida (pregnant female) is termed a therapeutic abortion, while an abortion induced for any other reason is termed an elective abortion. The term abortion most commonly refers to the induced abortion of a human pregnancy, while spontaneous abortions are usually termed miscarriages. Abortion has a long history and has been induced by various methods including herbal abortifacients, the use of sharpened tools, physical trauma and other traditional methods. Contemporary medicine utilizes medications and surgical procedures to induce abortion. The legality, prevalence, and cultural views on abortion vary substantially around the world. In many parts of the world there is prominent and divisive public controversy over the ethical and legal issues of abortion. Abortion and abortion-related issues feature prominently in the national politics in many nations often involving the opposing pro-life and pro-choice worldwide social movements. Incidence of abortion has declined worldwide, as access to family planning education and contraceptive services has increased. Abortion incidence in the United States declined 8% from 1996 to 2003. GNU Free Documentation License What's the difference between abstinence and abortion? Q. Surely, either way, you are denying a potentially unique human being the chance of life? I don't understand why people think contraception is so much better than abortion - is there really any difference between denying an individual life one way, or another way? If you didn't have sex, that egg and that sperm would be lost anyway - gone forever, never to be repeated. How is it so different to promote abstinence rather than abortion, when the end result is the same? :-) Asked by Eleanor B - Tue May 19 08:13:16 2009 - - 22 Answers - 0 Comments A. I see what you're saying. In both of these cases, a fetus COULD have a chance to become a baby, and in both cases, they're not. No sex=no baby, abortion=no baby. Answered by Yourface - Tue May 19 08:32:27 2009 Is China's mandatory abortion policy consistent with or antithetical to its official atheism? Q. Chinese parents are permitted only one child, and they face mandatory abortion if a second child is conceived. Does its official atheism (viewing religion as the opiate of the people) have any bearing on China's denial of the parents' reproductive rights and the the right to life of the unborn child? Asked by Bruce - Thu Aug 27 12:39:15 2009 - - 18 Answers - 1 Comments A. Yes, it's very consistent with its official atheism, as is their persecution of practitioners of various faiths, imprisoning and sentencing to labor camps those who belong to faiths that do not support their communist regime. Here in the US, the women who are forced to have an abortion are given political asylum. There are still debates raging about whether their husbands should be extended the same courtesy. A very recent case is in the news about this. Both parents should gain political asylum, because children need both their father and their mother. For those who say that forced abortion doesn't happen in China, I suggest that they see this story: China keeps its citizens from knowing much of what actually goes on. Q. I do not believe in abortion but do think that we need to control our population. I can't find any charities to donate to which don't do abortion, but do do birth control. I am in the UK, but would be happy to support such a charity based anywhere. Can anyone help? Asked by Julie B - Mon Oct 29 18:38:30 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. None that I know of so just give to your local childrens hospital. You may even want to volunteer some time there as well because you sound a like a person who loves children. Great Question though as I had never thought of it that way. I don't believe in abortion either as I am a born again Christian but I had honestly not thought of such an idea. Very interesting.
