The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) consists of two separate non-profit organizations: the ACLU Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization which focuses on litigation and communication efforts, and the American Civil Liberties Union, a 501(c)(4) organization which focuses on legislative lobbying. The ACLU's stated mission is "to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States." It works through litigation, legislation, and community education. Founded in 1920 by Crystal Eastman, Roger Baldwin and Walter Nelles, the ACLU was the successor organization to the earlier National Civil Liberties Bureau founded during World War I. The ACLU reported over 500,000 members at the end of 2005. Lawsuits brought by the ACLU have been influential in the evolution of Constitutional law. The ACLU provides legal assistance in cases in which it considers civil liberties to be at risk. Even when the ACLU does not provide direct legal representation, it often submits amicus curiae briefs. Outside of its legal work, the organization has also engaged in lobbying of elected officials and political activism. The ACLU has been critical of elected officials and policies of both Democrats and Republicans. From Wikipedia under the

Q. The concept of representing those without representation is a good one in theory, but the ACLU seems to seek out only those who clearly mean harm to our society. Why is this? And who contributes money to the ACLU, or do they operate just on the taxpayer paid awards? Asked by alltv - Sun Apr 1 19:53:39 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. To understand the ACLU, you must first look at the founder of it. After all, it was the founder that initially established te guideline with which it grew into the abomination it is today. The founder of the ACLU was a communist and as such developed the organization to strike at the root of the American culture where it would hurt the most. It distorts the Constitution and has pushed for ultra-liberal (a.k.a. communist) views by use of the courts. One example of this is its obsession with removing Christian morals and teachings. The do this by twisting the First Amendment by saying "Separation of Church and State." The problem is that their is NO "separation of Church and State" in the Constitution. Police generally respect the rights of persons who know their rights and actively stand up for those rights. As civil liberties are eroded in our society, we are all in debt to those brave persons who stand firmly against such encroachment. My avatar and my personality have this in common: I love the Constitution! Answered by LovesTheConstitution - Sun Sep 14 13:48:28 2008 why are the aclu considered to be on the left?
Q. As a libertarian I love the aclu. Its the only charity I donate to. And they don't favor the left wing in my opinion, or else I wouldn't support them. They take the libertarian position on almost every issue. That government has no right tell to people how to live. Sure they might defend left wing people, but the actual issues they defend are all libertarian. Plus they have defended almost as many christians and conservatives as they have liberals and libertarians.
