What activities would you like your kids to participate in?
Q. What type of activity would you consider is important to your kids between age 3 to 10? Are you willing to sign them up for group outdoor activities organized by private individual in Singapore, such as treasure hunt, nature walk, etc. Or do you think art & craft is more interesting? How much are you willing to pay for each activity? And how long should the duration be?

A. My 7 year old son was in flag football when he was 5. Tried it out and after the season, decided he didn't like it. Now he is 7 and is in soccer and just LOVES it. My daughter is 4 and she hasn't tried anything yet, but I think she wants to do something in gymnastics. Whatever my kids are willing to try (like sports, dance, music etc.) I will encourage it. If they do not want to, then I will not force it. For my son to play soccer it cost us $45 and that included the uniform we get to keep. That $45 is for the whole soccer season of August thru November.

How many special activities do you involve your kids in at once?
Q. I have 5 and one on the way and it is very hard to drive back and forth to multiple places, but I do. How many kids do you have and How old are they and what activity are they involved in? Mine: Daughter's - 9, 7, & 4 - is in gymnastics and dance 9 year old also plays soccer 7 year old also plays the piano sons - 3& 2 aren't in any activities yet but I'm planning Piano, Karote, and football. Is this too many? And I am not forcing them to do any of it They love it!

A. If they're happy and also have regular downtime to do what they want/ play with friends/ be outside then they're fine. I'm a big supporter of unstructured time, but anyone who tells you there's some set number of activities that's "too many" doesn't realize how different kids can be. I know what you mean about driving back and forth. I have four and I try to schedule activities together (like simultaneous swim lessons) or on weekends or evenings when my husband is home so that I don't have to drag all the kids along to another kid's activity. My younger kids do 2 activities in the morning when the older ones are at school, and the older ones have a total of 3 activities (totaling 2 hours a week) all split between Thursday afternoon… [cont.]

What activities will exercise my attention span?
Q. What type of general activities and hobbies help develop an attention span? Any ideas on what may hamper it?

A. I find games like kyodai and other puzzle games great for working out my brain. Obviously partaking in drugs will mess with your attention span, as will alchohol, lack of sleep or stress. I believe physical exercise strengthens the mind as well, by providing stimulation, and lessens depression. And yes, meditation is wonderful, empty the mind and you can focus on problems or whatever much easier.
