What kind of advertising can I do for my college area restaurant?
Q. I own a little restaurant in the college area of San Diego. I'm wondering if you can give me any tips for advertising my sandwich shop to the college students. Print advertising? Online Advertising? How much does it cost? Can you also give any ideas on special events or promotions to get customers in? Thanks!
Asked by john k - Fri Feb 8 05:41:12 2008 - - 7 Answers - 2 Comments
A. In addition to the suggestions from the previous person, if I were you I would look into the nearby college newspaper and find out their rates for advertising in print and on the website. Contacting someone in the sports or student activities departments of the college to find out about possible sponsorship opportunities (this will probably cost more than advertising in the campus newspaper). Word of mouth and flyers are probably going to be the cheapest way to get your name out there. You can hire students to hand out flyers on campus. Where I went to college (University of New Mexico) there was always a guy handing out flyers in a funny outfit, everyone laughed but they were one of the most popular lunch places in the area. Good luck! [cont.]

Q. How much do advertising agencies here in the Philippines charge? For example a TVC? POPs? Print ads? A full campaign for a client? It would also be very helpful to know the rates of big agencies (like BBDO Guerrero, TBWA, Publicis Jimenez Basic, Ogilvy, Etc.) and the smaller players in the industry. Thanks

A. It really depends on what kind of media you plan to use... around 50,000 the lowest fro print ads and can skyrocket from there. If you wish to post your products and services on the net or may want to find suppliers. you may want to visit bizeen, its a website with business profile of suppliers and buyers in the philippines.

What is a typical advertising budget for companies shown as a percentage of sales?
Q. what do companies spend on advertising? What is the percentage of sales that a consumer electronics company spends on advertising? How are advertising budgets decided?

A. This is a very broad scoping question. Each specific industry will spend a different percentage of gross revenue on advertising. If a company has good exposure to a physical location, lets say they are located on a busy street and they are a retailer, they don't need a large budget for advertising. Furthermore, product specific companies will fluxuate advertising costs based on where they are in the product life cycle (Educational advertising costs may be larger than other costs). There are two primary ways that a company can decide budgets for advertising; top-down and bottom-up. Imagine upper management on top and marketers on bottom. In a bottom up situation, the marketers will design the budget and propose it to management. In… [cont.]

A. I think those marketing campaigns are the best. Those at the roadside, where they do something innovative, creative, and out of the box. Like I saw this marketing campaign in the midst of a busy town. They were playing some games where some people try to hit bulleye. If they score, a girl would drop into the water. It attracted quite a big crowd. Probably because of the girls but I guess the crowd wants to know what is it all about too.

What is the best way to sell advertising space?
Q. I currently ride one of the 400 rickshaws in central London and I am looking to get a new one. They cost a lot of money and I would like a company to purchase the advertising space located in the back for 4000. At this price they will get continuous advertising for 5 years. What is the best way for me to approach businesses and companies and sell my idea? Other company currently rent advertising space on the back of a rickshaw for 250 a day! . Your help is much appreciated.
Asked by gumtrunk - Tue Jan 16 18:35:34 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Ask the companies currently renting why they think it is good for them. Then use this as a selling point to their competition. Also develop your own USP Also check out your route what type of customers you get, what type of services they would be interested in. When you know this then you can pitch to businesses offering those services etc. When you make your first million remember me!

How can I set up relationship with advertising agencies?
Q. Hi. I work as an account executive for a minority daily newspaper in the US. Unlike other A/E in mainstream media, I can very less money. I want to set up relationships with big advertising agencies to expand my network, and eventually draw ads into my newspaper. I tried so many advertising agencies, but all I had are voice mails and no responses except the front desk receptionist. My question is how can I reach those people in advertising agencies? Any advice is welcomed. Thank you very much.

A. I think there are at least two avenues for you to consider. An advertising agency or a marketing communications firm might be interested in your newspaper for two reasons: 1. The Media Director of the agency might be interested in reaching what, from your description, sounds like a very tight and well-defined demographic audience. In order to interest a media director, however, you will have to be able to provide detailed information about your newspaper. This would include the following: circulation - how many readers do you have? demographics - what is the actual demographic makeup of your readership? What is their ethnic makeup? How old are they? What kind of incomes do they have? Do they work in white collar jobs or blue collar… [cont.]

A. Salary depends on many factors including the work you have to show and the market the job is in. A designer in New York City will make more than a designer in St. Louis. The average will fall around 35k, but that number will fluctuate greatly depending on the city.

A. If you look in the front pages of most Canadian magazines, for instance Canadian Living Magazine it will give a complete breakdown of Departments and contact people for them, including sales and on line sales, etc. If you are interested in advertising in any particular magazine you should find out what companies they deal with. and contact them. A. The first thing - for marketing - you'll need is a successful campaign. Do you have a local non-profit that you could volunteer to help? Maybe you could offer to write promotional material if they'll provide the materials - printing, ad costs - you'll provide the labor. If you do something that looks nice and works well, use it as a sample and go around to businesses. If what you did for the np doesn't include advertising, mention your knowledge and contacts. Many businesses (sad to say as I'm in this field) are looking for contract work in marketing so are willing to consider freelance when their current contracts are up. Good luck.

A. You can get discount business cards on the internet- I would also put up fliers at the Vet offices, pet stores and contact as many dog show people as possible. Contact the British Kennel Club for show sites and dates, meet and make contact with people. Hand out cards, do some handshaking and schmoozing. Put ads in local papers, and on the radio. Have a Grand Opening with drawings for prizes and free goodies for the dogs- Like snacks with your business card attached or munchies for the owners with your business name on petit fours in the shape of biscuits. Its lots of work but once your name is out there if she gives little extras as well as great service, word of mouth will do the rest. Good Luck!

Marketing and promotion are critical to any business success and growth. Try this: Create a billboard web site - a website that describes your services and products and allows buyers to buy on line. If you're only after local business, Google offers a lot of local search options. Just add your address to the keywords. You can build a good-looking website using templates. Just add copy. Add a free checkout like osCommerce, open a Paypal account and start hyping the website through traditional marketing outlets. For example, use the classifieds in the local newspaper with nothing but your URL. It piques… [cont.]

Q. I just started a business which is not doing well. I have not done a lot to advertise as it is expensive. How much does a new business need to rely on advertising?

What are some good advertising ideas for a massage therapist?
Q. My girlfriend is a licensed massage therapist and just started her own business. She needs advise on advertising. What are some tips she could use? What should she do?

A. Suggestions: 1. She should join an online forum for massage therapists she can pick up a lot of ideas there. (e.g. www.massage.meetup.com and choose her location from there) 2. She should also join industry associations or log into their websites so she can subscribe to their newsletters and feeds. (e.g. AMTA, NCMTCB, etc.) Hope this helps a little.

How do you start out in an advertising career?
Q. I have a student who is serious about getting into advertising - he has a degree but would go back to school to study if need be. What kind of trainings should he look for, or in what area of advertising is it easiest to break into?

A. If your student wants to break into the creative side of advertising, tell him that he should go to a "portfolio school." He'll be able to refine his creative skills and leave with a "book" that will be his resume to get a creative job at an advertising agency or at an in-house advertising department. If he wants to break into account management or media, then I would suggest he start in advertising sales. Tell him to start at a newspaper or radio station, or anywhere selling advertisements. Eventually he is going to make contacts that will get him into an advertising agency if he wants to, or maybe he'd like staying in sales. Wish him good luck for me!
