How do I reset the airbag light on a Skoda Felice?
Q. I've just had some work done to my car and the battery was changed. The airbag wasn't touched in any way, but the dashboard airbag light stays on all the time now. I'm concerned this will be an MOT fail point, and I'd like to know how I reset it so that the car realises it can turn the little light off. After the first two daft answers below, I really would appreciate sensible suggestions. There is no call to insult anyones choice of car, we drive within our budget and I'd like to keep this one working well if at all possible

A. sometimes that will happen if you disconect the batery, the only thing you can do is take it to a garage and get them to turn the light off for you , most garages have the equipment , it takes , only a few mins ,but costs about 30 pounds , but it should not fail an mot with the light on so no probs

What kind of force warrants airbag deployment?
Q. Does a vehicle need to have been in a collision for its airbags to deploy? Or could some other force be enough to activate them? As example, if you pounded on the dashboard or steering wheel face with your fist, or were careless with the hard corner of a brief case while entering a vehicle, or your twelve year old kicks the airbag area firmly in a tantrum, is there a chance the bags may be damaged or caused to inflate? Thanks in advance.

A. The sensors that set off an airbag are not located in the airbags themselves. They are positioned all around the car - in the front bumper, the frame, almost anywhere EXCEPT where the airbag is located. It is possible to accidentally cause an airbag to deploy, but it usually has to be in the area of the sensor, not the compartment itself. The main exception to that rule is after a collision, when the airbags may be triggered by various actions of rescuers attempting to gain access to the car. But in normal use, you're fairly safe. Accidental airbag deployment is usually due to manufacturer defects (which you can't control), environmental issues (salt, rust, and other causes of corrosion have been factors in some incidents, usually in… [cont.]

How safe is it to drive without an airbag?
Q. My Civic's airbag does not work. I don't drive on highways, just on local streets. I don't even drive on expressways. I can't afford a new car, and I don't think somebody can fix the airbag, for a cheap price anyways. Do you think it's safe to drive without an airbag?

A. There was a time when no one had airbags - because they weren't around until the early 1990's on most cars. It safe to drive a car without airbags as long as you don't wreck it... Air bags significantly reduce the chance of serious injury in a collision, but they aren't "magic" - you can still be severely injured or killed in a crash even if you do have an airbag. As far as your insurance company is concerned, it's probably not safe to drive the car with the airbag not functioning properly - if you get into an accident and are injured there's a good chance they may refuse to pay a claim for your personal injuries etc. if you wreck your car with the airbag system not functioning before the crash. It's might seem expensive initially to… [cont.]

Can an airbag still deploy if the ground terminal is removed from the battery?
Q. I have to replace my combination switch. The service manual makes a great deal of effort to emphasize disabling the airbags after removing the ground terminal on the battery before servicing the steering column. Understanding basic electronics, doesn't removing the ground terminal on the battery already disable the airbag?

A. yes, it holds a charge in it for a short period of time after you unplug a battery, usually no more than a few minutes, but i would pull the fuse out for it as well just in case the wire were to somehow come back into contact with the battery while you're working on, or near the airbag system.

Check out the websites below for the EXACT answers to your questions including fault code charts and reset information. This site tells you exactly what needs to be replaced and how to access them (seat belts & all) on over 3500 cars. It's a pay site ($14.95 / day), but it's little money well spent to get the correct answers and to see exactly what you're after...it uses pictures, not text, so you can see what you re looking for. A. It needs to go onto a subaru diagnostic computer to have the light reset, either a dealership or at a specialist. As you've said your car is an import you might find the dealership network will not allow the vehicle in their workshop! I know this is is the case with Subaru UK. Your airbag wont deploy in the event of an accident until you get this fixed. Your only other alternative would be to take out the clocks and remove the bulb but I wouldn't advise that! Hope this helps

How do i turn off the Airbag warning light in a Ford Fiesta Encore?
Q. Hi all, my airbag warning light flashes intermittedly now and again. Normally opening/closing the boot/bonnet clears it until i pass over bumps etc in the road. So perhaps a loose connection!?! Just wondering if there is a way to turn it off (i use the car for tiny journeys, so not fussed about having a working airbag). Is there a fuse linked directly to the airbag system? cheers, matt

A. its a sensor going bad its whats causing it to happen to it,and there's many sensors on that car,you need to take it and have it scanned and see if they can narrow it down for you to which one it is,then you can replace it,and it will stop doing that, its ok to drive like that ,it usually cost around 75-125 bucks on some of those to get them repaired, the air bag should still work in the case of an accident, but have it repaired as soon as you can, good luck with it.

A. You accidentally broke the clockspring and it will need to be replaced. The clockspring is a ribbon wire that is coiled up inside the steering column. This component is the subject of many discussions on these threads. Many times the steering wheel or column is disconnected and then rotated beyond the center position it is required to be in. This will cause the clockspring wire to break. The clockspring delivers current to all of the systems above it the airbag, cruise control and horn. When it fails (and they do a lot) the wire breaks leaving one or all of the circuits open and inoperative. This will cause the airbag light to come on and shut down the airbag system. As long as that light is on, the airbags will NOT deploy, even in… [cont.]

A. Here's a site that will explain everything you need to know about airbag lights and resetting the system. On most vehicles, the airbag light should come on for @6 seconds, and then go off if the system is working properly. If there is a fault or a problem in the system, the light will remain illuminated, or flash continuously. If the airbag light does not work properly, some vehicles have an audible tone that sounds indicating a problem with the airbag light system. When the light is on (or the tone is sounding), the airbag will NOT deploy, even in an accident. The flashing light on your car is telling the answer you need. What is the proper way to position yourself if you know your airbag is going to go off?
Q. Is there any positions in the car that will cause less damage. If you are certain of a head on collision and know the airbag is going to go off, should you put your hands up to cover your face or down, turn your head, etc?? Is there any proper procedure?
Asked by Toro123 - Fri Apr 27 17:27:01 2007 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Hold the wheel firmly at the 2:00 and 10:00 positions. Face forward. Hold yourself all the way back in your seat, head against the head restraints. Basically, the normal driving position for the most part. The majority of the force will hit you in the chest, not the face. Blocking your head or torso with your arms WILL cause needless injury, possibly shattering your arms or worse. Ducking your head down could get you killed. Turning your head won't do much but if you see the impact coming it's best to be in a face-forward position.

A. You need to scan for codes first before playing assumption game. Replacing airbag system on modern vehicle isn't something that average backyard mechanic can do it. On top of that after replacing some airbag components, it must be programmed to vehicle VIN numbers plus other stuff. No, nobody can recharge air bag system.

A. it usually runs around 3-500 bucks depending on who does it and if they use new one or one from a salvaged car, there are some available used that aren't hurt, and they are as good as a new one,if you go new with it,the price can vary from one place to the other, that's going to be based on the shops labor to install it,and the price they pay for it,good luck.

What's this flasing airbag light code for my 96 chevy corsica?
Q. While driving, my airbag light flashes this sequence: solid light for about 5 secs then 6 flashes. Sometimes the battery lamp will flicker. Also th ABS lamp comes on and stays solid. Anyone have any idea what that code might be? Is my ABS just toast? I just replaced the battery about three months ago. I'm really curious about the meaning of the airbag light flashing.

A. Your vehicle will require a scan tool for the proper diagnosis (and not the scanner at Auto Zone..airbag systems cannot be ready by that system), but here's a site that will explain everything you need to know about airbag lights and resetting the system. Once you know the code, you can most likely repair it yourself. There are fairly easy procedures that most people are capable of repairing. Airbagsolutions.com has the fault code charts to tell you what is wrong! This website gives you the procedure for diagnosing and resetting airbag lights. See if your car is listed here. Although it s a pay site ($14.95/day), it s a lot cheaper than going to the dealer On most vehicles, the airbag light should come on for @6 seconds, and… [cont.]

How to get the Airbag error code in 96 Camry?
Q. I tried to read the OBD-II code using my Laptop and ELM 327 connector. There is no error registered. I used the access behind the coin box. Should i have to do it differently to know the airbag error code? Air bag light is on. Is there a different access for air bag computer module? I tried the procedure from the factory manual. Even after the code was cleared it comes back again 54 - Open on Passenger side. How to check what is the problem in the squib?

A. I always use a snap-on scanner. To access it with OBD2 the plug should be under the dash on the drivers side your laptop thing probably isn't working because the software to access the system is vehicle specific.Just because the federal goverment said with OBD2 everyone has to have the same connector and put it in aproximatly the same place,Most mfg'rs have different software to pull codes.Get ahold of a automotive scanner and it should be no problem.
