i am planning to buy an stand aircon for my room without a window.?
Q. is it safe? i usually close my door. . could it lead me to soffucation now? im staying in this room for almost 5 months now, and its really hot from 11am-4pm , . im planning to buy a stand aircon, about 2feet tall. .

A. You've gotta have a window, or some access to a space where you can dump the warm air coming from the ac unit. If you just let it sit and run without running the flex duct to and outlet, the end result will be that you'll make the room warmer. Other than that, no, there's no threat of suffocation. Hope this helps

What is the appropriate circuit breaker amperage for a one horsepower aircon?
Q. The one hp aircon will be plugged to a 230V/60Hz power source. According to the vendor's display tag, the Energy Efficiency Rating or the EER (1 to 12 of which 12 is the most efficient) is 10.5.
Asked by Andrew R - Sun May 11 05:59:06 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. A1 Hp air con is 746 watts. Assuming its power factor is 0.8 I= 746/230(0.8) I =4.05 amperes. Air Circuit Breaker rating = 2.5(4.05) =10 amperes. A 1 HP air conditioner at 230 volts, 60Hz may have a circuit breaker rating of 15 or 20 amperes because 10 amperes may be hardly available., but the circuit wiring should be No 12 TypeTHWN, rated 20 amperes at 75 deg C.

How likely are the bearings in the aircon pulley likely to fail if I don't switch on the aircon?
Q. What would be the consequences if the bearings were to fail? The water pump in my car is driven by the cam belt. My car is a Vauxhall Astra 1.6 auto 2002 reg. If the aircon is switched on it stalls the engine. My garage tells me that it is not sufficient just not to turn on the aircon to avoid further damage. Understand from Yahoo Answers that the only likely further damage, if the aircon is not switched on, is failure of the bearings in the aircon pulley.
Asked by J B - Sat Aug 11 08:40:46 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There are 2 sets of bearings. The ones that are bad inside the compressor and the freewheel pulley bearings. I have never seen the freewheel bearings go bad. Since it only stall when you turn on the a/c, then it must be the bearings inside and not the free wheel ones for the clutch. When they start to go bad, you will hear them.

Is it safe to breath behind an aircon?
Q. I have to urinate at the side of a building but there's an aircon there. I still urinated though. I just wonder now what air did I breath.
Asked by blayamous - Wed Jul 1 03:59:21 2009 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments
A. You went on the heat exchanger. None of the air you breath gets close to the area you went. You may have went on the cooling coils. You would have cooled them off and saved some power. I don't think urine will cause respiratory issues anyway. Some kinky people have been taking golden showers for years. I have to admit I would like to give my boss one from time to time. I have never heard of anyone getting physically ill from this activity.

how do i prevent the aircon from icing?
Q. Hi , I always have this problem of our airconditoner's surface icing. It has been repaired twice already this month and I'm planning on getting a new one. How do I prevent icing from happening. Usually I'd set the temperature on 7 (range is 1-10) for about 8 hours a night.

A. There's five possible problems That I can think of off the top of my head. 1) very dirty or clogged filter. 2) Air handler fan isn't working. 3) Low charge. 4) Obstruction or blockage inside the main ductwork. 5) Pinched or bent suction line. 1) and 3) are the most likely causes.

My window aircon's thermostat causes power to trip when it reaches the point '4'. How to make it work?
Q. It's a Fujitsu General air conditioner, a bit old. The fan does work properly and the thermostat control knob too, upto the point marked '4'. If i try to move it up for cooler air, the MCB trips. There's apparently no cooling at all. A technician said it's something to do with the compressor but I'm not convinced. What do you think?
Asked by sabitha b - Wed Feb 21 15:55:03 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. We had the same problem with our window unit. Take it to the carwash and wash it out (this should be done yearly) with the cover on. If that doesn't take care of it, take it to someone who repairs air conditioners. A wire may need to be replaced, if not the compressor. But try washing it out first and see if that helps. Ours used to have a big "CLUNK" whenever it would go into a cooling cycle, that cleared it right up and we can run it full boar wiht no problem.

I have an aircon with a 20amp plug. How can I get it to work on 10amp without installing a new p/point?
Q. After a messy seperation I moved into a rental and bought the biggest box air con on the market (not being told that it had a 20amp plug on it, easy prey!) Got the go ahead to install a p/point, was then told I need a circuit breaker and the power board needs to be rewired etc etc, costing about $4-5000. Landlords have done nothing and don't plan to in the near future. I have no ceiling fans (Townsville - very hot and humid) would love to hear any suggestions on what i can do.

A. OK if you plan to plug this in to a bed room. the wiring is probably not rated at 20 amps. so under no circumstance should you put in a bigger breaker. If the place is up to code your dinning room and kitchen are 20 amp circuits and you can replace the 15 amp receptacle with a 20 amp one. best bet is to size the ac to the room. a small unit can most of the time run on a 15 amp 120 volt circuit. if the panel box is up to date a new 20 amp 120 volt or a 20 amp220 volt circuit should cost from $300 to $600 depending on how long the run is

Is it true that if you disconnect an aircon unit to remove it that it gives off a gas? Is it dangerous?
Q. and can I do it myself? I'll dispose of it properly/environmentally - just wondering about the actual disconnection itself - I'm in Australia.

A. airconditoning units have to be ( in the USA ) emptied of there freon before throwing the unit away. the gas is not dangerous... the old freon is only dangerous to the ozone layer..but if you burn the gas it can hurt you. if the unit has r-12 or r-22 gas then it really needs a person to dump the gas..but the new gas is'nt that bad ..but it still needs a tech to do it. if your caught doing it i think the fine is 25,000 usa dollars and time in jail. at work we have our own people do it...because the epa would have a fleid day with our butts haha

A. Look very closely at the unit, especially around where the wires enter the box. If you find a little push button or rocker switch try those they may be behind the front grill which is removable. You should also try to see if the power supply is working. Go to the fuse box or breaker panel for the house and see if anything has burned out or tripped. If the breaker is not in the on position, turn it to off and back to on.

Why does my aircon make me feel irritable when on the hot air setting? Anything to do with negative ions?
Q. Maybe it's just my imagination, but I think it also makes me feel more tired. I know people say the theories around negative ions are pseudoscience and a way to sell products, so I don't know what to think. Whatever the reason, can a humidifier make a difference?
Asked by Amelie - Wed Jan 10 04:41:29 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Negative ions (or cations) won't have that sort of effect on human health. They would ionise the dead skin on contact, but as the skin is dead this is not a cancer risk. If you inhale cations there might be a slightly higher risk, but the risk is extremely minimal. Also, why would your aircon be emitting cations? Any humidity in the air would deionise them. You may be irritable due to the constant hum of the machine. The drier air might make your throat feel drier, and that would add to the irritation. If you could dampen the sound, you would probably feel less irriable. Maybe a humidifier would help because it would make the air you breathe feel less artificially dry. In any case, 'negative ions' aren't an issue here.

You can sit quietly and mold the frozen bags to your wrists and neck which cools your blood down quickest. Make enough bags to rotate as needed. Of course keep well hydrated with cool drinks too.~~

Q. What is the principle of the working of an aircon and refrigerator?
Asked by Nandini R - Fri Feb 20 04:56:36 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Refrigeration Cycle is the principle for AC or Refri. to work here the Refrigerant (the fluid in) is compressed in Compressor increasing its temp and pressure. then is is passed through the condenser ( black coil on back side) where it is cooled due to atmosphere, but pressure is still very high. This cooled liquid is then passed thru a throttling device (capillary tube or throttle valve) passing due to friction it looses its energy thus pressure is dropped drastically and temperature fall below '0' (sub zero level owing to PV=mRT) then this chilled vapour of fluid passes thru Evaporator (cooling/storing space) where it is heated by your stuff. hence removing the heat from the food stuffs and cooling them, and liquid getting heated up.… [cont.]
