How do I fill out # of years of Algebra I, II, III, geometry, trigonometry etc.?
Q. I am a grade 12 IB student in Canada, and I have no idea how to fill out an American University application that requires me to know this. In grade 9 I took academic math, then grade 10 academic math, grade 10 advanced math, then grade 11 higher level IB math, and now I am taking grade 12 IB higher level math. How do I transform this to years of algebra, geometry, trig, functions and all the rest?

Why are some people better at algebra and some better at geometry?
Q. I was once told by a math teacher that for most people, their brain only works one way: either algebra or geometry. She said that most people are only truly good at one - and the better they are at one, the worse they are at the other. My question is why is that the case and how do you find out which you are?
Asked by diygeekchic - Mon May 26 00:33:12 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I disagree with your teacher. Most people are not usually better at one or the other. And being good at one, has very little to do with being good at the other. Geometry is a visual math. You can "see" it, it makes sense. Algebra is more abstract. Requires you to follow rules that make no sense (at the time). Our education system tries to force everyone to learn these concepts at the same age. But this is actually a terrible age to learn some of these concepts. It's all about cognitive development, how the brain develops. Boys tend to be able to perform abstract math before girls. I'm not saying all boys develop this ability before all girls. Just on average. Girls are better at following the rote process. Do A, then B, then C, result D. [cont.]

How do I cram basic algebra and geometry into three weeks?
Q. I've got about three weeks until the ACT. I'm not concerned about any of it but the math --- and that is a big, big problem. I've always had a hard time with math and as a result have used alternative programs since about fourth grade that are thorough but SLOW. I'm technically a senior, but due to the programs (and various interfering personal issues), my math level is about that of a high school freshman. I think I can learn the basics of algebra and geometry if I work hard at it, but I need to know WHAT to study --- what are the basic operations I need to be able to perform, etc? I'm currently working on powers and trying to figure out radicals --- early Algebra 1 stuff, basically. I've got almost no experience with geometry.

What are your favorite geometry and algebra review books?
Q. I need a couple of good books to fine tune my geometry and algebra I/II skills. i haven't seen either in over 20 years. i was looking at the Cliffnotes and Schaum's outlines but would love some real time input. Possibly from a high school or community college math instructor? A little clarification: I need to relearn algebra and geometry before I sit for the GRE. Sooo, a history of math doesn't help much.

A. Its not exactly a geometry book, but one that opens the door to early geometry and makes the subject extraordinarily fascinating. It's called 'Solving Stonehenge' and explains how prehistoric people developed an empirical understanding of geometry, used it to solve practical problems, to create decorative motifs and perhaps 'sacred talismans'. Most students would find it very interesting.

A. You know, the quality of maths books is absolutely atrocious these days - I've found a couple of good ones in my search, Oxford University Press - Understanding Mathematics is sound but still presumptious in parts but takes you up to as far as A-level with concise proofs and practice, whereas for Geometry I wouldn't settle for anything less than the 13 books of Euclid. Otherwise, I've actually had to buy some books for a single chapter and just mix and match. In addition, some books on Mathematical History are insightful.

A. SAT doesn't really have Trig. Buy a prep book (Kaplan Princeton Reivew Collegeboard) and they should explain it well enough for you to understand.

A. If you did well in math in the past, it should come back to you. It will probably be tough at first, but just work at it, and don't fall behind. If you can, you might want to contact your teacher ahead of time and let him/her know your situation and ask for some advice on what to review before classes start. Another suggestion is to google algebra and geometry tutorials, and check out a few sites to find one that suits your learning style. Many are interactive, where you can input your answer, and if you get it wrong, it will show you a step by step solution. Or, if you have a cheap bookstore near you, new or used, you can usually find textbooks and instructional books on different math subjects. Basically, you won't need to know… [cont.]

When does Math start to become boring and useless? Is it from Algebra? Geometry? or the transitions?
Q. When does Math become boring that you don't get the logic of studying it? is it the Polynomials? or what? Can you guys refer me to a site, a book or whatever reliable sources you may have relating to this topic? Thanks :)

A. Interesting! Well, for me its the Domain-Range topic in Algebra. I haven't learned anything and I never understood the point of studying it nor I understood its concepts. Math gets boring when one can no more get its logic, and I reckon it happens in every individual, even to those Math geeks. Anyway, Algebra is always boring and Geometry never gets. :D You may want to check this out:

A. There is so much information in each one of those subjects that there is no one book to cover them all. So the bad thing is that you will need to go through at least 4 seriously thick books. The good thing is that used textbooks are ridiculously cheap. Libraries often just give them away and you can always find them on eBay for around $5. Once a publisher releases a new edition, all the old editions instantly loose all thier value becuase college kids are now forced to purchase the new edition for hundreds of dollars. So just buy an older edition book for dirt cheap. There is never much difference from edition to edition. Start with basic algebra Then geometry then advanced algebra then Trig Also check with your local… [cont.]

How do i solve this algebra/geometry problem?
Q. the problem is... The measure of one interior angle of a parallelogram is 0.25 times the measure of another angle. Find the measure of each angle. Thanks!
Asked by Ari - Mon Apr 6 21:10:30 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. the sum of angles in a parallelogram is 360 deg opposite angles are equal, so call one angle x and the other 0.25x, the sum of angles is then x+x+0.25x+0.25x = 2.5x=360 or x=144 deg and also 36 deg

What advice should I give to my friend (She doesn't know whether to take Geometry or Algebra 2)?
Q. She took the credit by exam and now she can take either course. Technically she just got credit for the whole geometry course, but she isn't sure whether skipping it and going to Algebra 2 will hurt her in the end. She really likes being the top of her class. I want to help her get there but I don't want to accidentally ruin her chances. Any advice would be good. She is a freshman.
Asked by Savannah - Mon Aug 10 15:28:48 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Skipping Geometry probably will not effect her success in an Algebra 2 class. When she is done with Algebra 2 and moves on to Trigonometry, then she might catch up a little slow, but i do not think that it would be terribly detrimental. If she has the opportunity, skip Geometry, she will get enough review in her trig class to catch her up, and Geometry proofs are the devil, literally.

A. Geometry is an area of math that some (more than you'd think) just love and oddly, there are many cases where an individual does poorly in all other aspects of math except geometry! Of course, the deeper one delves into geometry, the more other forms of math come into play. Geometry is best described as the study of shapes! Everyday geometry deals with real world situations that comfort some students in that they can get their head around stuff that is tangible. Of course, in the fullest extent of the discipline, geometry can get just as weird and abstract as any other study, and in more advanced study, algebra is employed all the time with geometry. Trig is a wonderful offshoot of geometry if you will, and is indisposable as a tool in… [cont.]

Q. I fail Algebra 2 because of it's difficulties and this semester i have to pass Geometry to pass the year and i find Geometry easier than Algebra. Why is that?
Asked by Chosen One - Wed Feb 25 12:24:16 2009 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, I congratulate you in that case for passing Geometry. But maybe you need to pass also your Algebra. You found Geometry maybe quite easy when compare to Algebra because you can visually see the diagrams, shapes and forms in Geometry while Algebra is more on "equations" and memorization of formulas. Visuals sometimes help to make the problem easy to understand, analyze and solve. Well done!
