Al Jazeera (Arabic: الجزيرة al-jazīrah, IPA: [aldʒaˈziːra]), which means "The Island" or "The Peninsula" (in reference to the Arabian Peninsula) in Arabic, refering to the network's status as the only independent news network in the Middle East, is a television network headquartered in Doha, Qatar. Initially launched as an Arabic news and current affairs satellite TV channel with the same name, Al Jazeera has since expanded into a network with several outlets, including the Internet and specialty TV channels in multiple languages, and in several regions of the world. The original Al Jazeera channel's willingness to broadcast dissenting views, including on call-in shows, created controversies in Gulf Arab states. The station gained worldwide attention following the September 11, 2001 attacks, when it was the only channel to cover the war on Afghanistan live from its office there and broadcast video statements by Osama bin Laden and other al-Qaeda leaders (see Videos of Osama bin Laden). Q. is the boycott of aljazeera from the Networks tantamount to censorship similar to the one in China or is it self preservation ? its not because of the violence because there's channels that show far more violence . its not a matter of bad taste because well if that were the case 90% of channels would be shut down . so its Censorship of Foreign materials during wartime ? or from Foreigner seeking to undermine America ? so said the chairman .! Its not because people wouldn't watch it because for most channels on network either the network pays to carry it or the channel provider pays the network to carry it .
