How do you seek membership into an alumnae chapter of delta sigma theta?
Q. I understand that you must attend a rush activity but how do you get the members to know you beforehand? I know that you must get majority vote by the chapter but how will they know who I am? Are you allowed to attend events posted on their website? Are you allowed to contact the chapter directly about membership intake? I really want to be a member but I am just not sure how to go about it for grad chapter. It seems more difficult than undergrad and even more secretive.

A. You can only apply for an alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. based on your address. In other words, if you live in a city/county that has a chapter you can only apply for membership to that chapter, you cannot hop around to every chapter trying to get in. The word will get around and you will just look like you are trying to get in anyway you can. Generally speaking alumnae chapters only have lines every five to ten years. Go to the national website and locate the region that you are in, once you locate the region go to their website. The website should provide you with all of the active chapters in that region. Find the alumnae chapter that is closest to you and try to find their website. If they do not have a website… [cont.]

What is the appropriate way to contact an alumnae chapter?
Q. I am interested in getting to know the local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta and would like to know the appropriate way to contact the chapter. Their website states that interested members should write a letter but at this time I am interested in learning more about the chapter and their community involvement. This would also give me the opportunity to get involved in community events that are not well advertised. Their website does not appear to be updated regularly so there are no upcoming events listed on the site. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A. My advice is to contact the president, or vp of the chapter. I am sure they have an email listed. In the email express to them that you are interested in any upcoming or future events, and how you be involved with any community service projects that they may have coming up. I know a lot of chapters have tons of events due to the holiday season (Soup kitchen, toys for tots, Visiting the elderly homes, etc..) This would allow you to not only get to know my sorors and allow them to get to know you, but if they see that there is a genuine interests there, they would include you on future mailing lists which is always plus especially since you stated that their website is not updated regularly. Just a thought, and good luck to you!

Q. When i applied for undergrad admission into the sorority, i was required to submit a letter of recommendation along with other materials (i obviously wasnt chosen), but now i would like to join my local grad chapter and was wondering if i needed a letter or recommendation as well. Any advice would help. thanks!

A. Yes, you will need a few letters of recommendations in order to qualify for membership. This will all be explained to you once you attend Rush! You also want to make sure that one of your letters is from and active member.

A. Hello there, I'm really hoping that you didn't mean you've been emailing and waiting idly by for a response for the past four years! Although both chapters have websites, don't think that your message wasn't received just because you didn't receive a response. In the meantime, a better way to express your interest in joining the Sorority might be to attend any public events that are held, and get to know the members. Since you are in the area, remaining actively involved in community service will likely cause you to cross paths with my Sorors members as well. You never know, there may be members from surrounding chapters at your church, place of business, or other venues. (Although, I have to admit that I wouldn't suggest approaching them… [cont.]

Pledging Delta sigma Theta Alumnae in Med School?
Q. i am wondering how I can become involved with the Alumnae chapter of DST in my area. I basically understand the process but I am wondering how exactly I get to know alumnae DST members being that I am new to the area. In undergrad it was more apparent whom was a member. I will be in medical school this year but I am passionate and determined to join DST(if I am accepted). So 2 questions, 1. How do you get involved in an alumnae chapter? (Should I send a letter of interest) and 2. Do you think I will have time to join while I am in medical school. (I know my education comes first). But does alumnae chapter usually take up an extraordinarily large amount of time? Thank you SO much!

A. First off, congrats and good luck to you in Medical School! Okay now to the question at hand. Becoming a member through alum chapter is in my opinion more challenging because unlike undergrad, you don't know who are members of the organization. I would try to find out where the nearest grad chapter is from where you will be attending school. Try googling it, I am sure you can find it. Also go to our national website Here you will find the different regions of where each chapter is located. Once you find the website I am sure they will probably have a calender of events. If your schedule permits, I would suggest that you support all if not as many events as possible. My sorors need to know who you are, and supporting their events is… [cont.]

Delta Sigma Theta Alumnae Chapter in Neighboring City?
Q. The alumnae chapter in my city is considering having intake as early as 2009. There is a chapter in a neighboring city having rush in January. Many of my friends and coworkers that are members of other organizations tell me to just get a mailbox in that city and it will be enough. They tell me that people use P.O. Boxes and mailboxes all the time when they want to get into a chapter in a city they do not live in. This seems a little shady to me because I think I would have to show some proof, other than a mailbox address, that I live in that city(which I don't). Is it true that just a P.O. How is community service proved by sorority alumnae chapter during the membership project?
Q. This question piggybacks off another question I asked earlier this month. I stated that over the past 6 or 7 years, I've participated in walkathons for mulitiple breast cancer organizations, the UNCF, and just recently a Junior Achievement. I was doing these things prior to deciding to pursue membership with an alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta. What would I have to provide to the alumnae chapter to prove that I did, infact, participate in these activities. The names of the organizations? Exact dates of participation? What if I don't have that, considering I participated in these events, not to prove anything to anyone, but out of my heart's pure desire?
Asked by Char - Mon Jun 23 14:21:40 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Do you have copies of any of the forms you used? How about some kind of sourvenir, such as a T-shirt? Photos? If you don't have any of these, try to find the exact names of the organizations and dates. I doubt they keep permanent records of who participates in their fund-raising events, but you could ask. If you don't have any of those things, you might ask someone else who participated to write a letter for you. Even you mother could do that. Finally, just write down what information you have. The sorority should trust its members to tell the truth. If they don't trust you, perhaps they aren't worthy of your membership. If you cannot be trusted, then perhaps they shouldn't accept you.

Does any know anything about the Jackson (TN) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta ?
Q. When was it Founded? Who where it's founders? Is it known as Beta Chi Chapter?
Asked by searchingfortherightsisterhood - Mon Aug 4 18:54:37 2008 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Alumnae (graduate) chapters of Delta Sigma Theta are not named with greek letters, so the name that you have listed in your question is correct. Just a helpful hint: Delta only has 22 founders - those that organize a new chapter are known as charter members. Although I did not see a website right away, there is a mailing address for Jackson TN alumnae on their regional website. If you are interested in getting to know the members, perhaps you can send a note and inquire about events open to the public that you may attend in the near future? I'd also suggest staying tuned to community announcements and newspapers, since events may be posted here.

Q. When was it Founded? Who where it's founders? Is it known as Beta Chi Chapter?

A. Alumnae (graduate) chapters of Delta Sigma Theta are not named with greek letters, so the name that you have listed in your question is correct. Just a helpful hint: Delta only has 22 founders - those that organize a new chapter are known as charter members. Joining Delta Sigma Theta Alumnae...?
Q. During my undergrad experience, I was unable to pledge b/c the chapter was suspended. I have graduated and would like to join the Alumnae chapter in my area. I have spoken to one of the members and have even went to one of the events. My question is, how do I spark conversation at party when everyone is trying to enjoy themselves? Or at a church function that DST Alum is throwing? I am just confused in those types of settings, how can one stand out and hold conversation?

A. Hi there, The best advice that I can give you is to be yourself. I know that seems kind of vague, but trust me it works. I would start by either complementing them on the event, if you are having a great time, or if you've learned something from the event, then tell them that. You can also ask them about future events that they may be hosting, or if they have a mailing list that you can add your info so they can keep you in the know as to what's coming up in the chapter. You can also ask if they need any help or volunteers at any community service projects they may have coming up. If you are at an event where you it's more of an open forum type thing, then I would participate, and add to the conversation. I guess in a nutshell it… [cont.]

Best advice for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Alumnae?
Q. I have been interested in becoming a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for years now. The chapter at my undergrad university has been suspended so I am looking to join an alumnae chapter. I am currently in grad school working on my Master's and plan to go for my Ph.D. I enjoy doing community service and have been doing it off and on for years and plan on picking up with the community service since it is the summer and I have a lot more time on my hands. I am a very determined young woman and refuse to give up on my dream. I know what my local chapter is and plan to attend their events. What's the best advice that some current members can give prospective members? I have been interested in becoming a member of Delta Sigma Theta… [cont.]

A. Your question is very general, so my answer is going to have to be very general. Being a part of my illustrious sisterhood requires a lot of hard work. Alumnae chapters for the most part have lines every five to ten years. I am not sure exactly what type of advice you are seeking, but if Delta is in your heart continue to seek her. It seems like you are on the right track though. I hope this helps and good luck to you!

Time line of rush and membership intake process of Delta Sigma Theta?
Q. I went to rush for an alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta. The deadline for submission was this past Monday. It is now Friday, should I have received a phone call by now regarding the interview process, and also I know it's late to ask. I know 2 letters of recommendation were required, requesting 1 year of continuous community service, should both of the letters had one year? I know one letter was for 1 year 4 months and the other was for 5 months. Could that have hurt my chances in receiving an interview?

A. Hello there! Well firstly, alumnae chapters usually have hundreds of women applying for membership especially because they dont have lines as often as undergraduate chapters. With that being said, 5 days is too short a time for the ladies to review all the applications and decide who gets and interview. Most often, if your packet is complete (i.e. you have provided all of the required information) you will get an interview. As far as your community service letters, if the application stated that you needed one year of continuous community service, then that is what you should have provided. However, it is up to the chapter members whether or not they feel that your community service is adequate. Hopefully you are accepted for membership… [cont.]
