What are the prerequisites for AP Calculus?
Q. I'm taking pre-calculus over the summer to take AP Calculus next year. I'm worried that I won't be well-prepared enough for AP Calculus next year. What areas/topics should I do extra review in to ensure I do well in AP Calculus? Please include a sample pre-calculus syllabus if possible.

A. since im taking ap calc ab right now. i can tell you that you need to know a lot of trigonometry. all kind of trigonometry that they expect you to know. the unit circle, trig identities( pythagorean, double angle, power reducing, half angle.), and ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide by hand (there are questions you have to do without a calculator.) are some must know. and i think thats all.

What college Class should i take take to prepare for AP Calculus next year?
Q. I'm junior currently taking Trig/Pre calculus, planning to take a summer classes at the college, I wanted to know which math class would most help full to prepare for AP Calculus next year that i can take in the summer at the college. ( math is not my strongest subject)

A. during my time at UMD, ive had to redo one class. i found it incredibly easy the second time around. for that reason i think you should find out the math class that business majors take. it would be a calculus class, but without the theory. this is almost the same as AP calc and wiill really prep you well for it. take the ap test no matter how well you think you know the material!

What is the difference between AP Calculus AB and IB Math Standard Level 2?
Q. What is the difference between AP Calculus AB and IB Math Standard Level 2? I am taking IB SL 2 right now, I took pre-calclus (IB SL 1) last year. I heard from my classmates who are taking AP Calc AB, that we are basically learning the same thing. I am just wondering if there is any difference. Thank you! I am junior this year.

How I do increase my background knowledge and prepare for AP Calculus BC or AB?
Q. I think somehow math will be very important in the medical field and I'm only a high school junior. I'm just in academic pre-cal and I think I wanna take AP calculus (preferably BC) but how can I if I'm weak at math and stuff. How do I prepare myself to get better and faster with my math skills?
Asked by Ezra - Sun Oct 26 14:16:00 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Use the Schaum's Outline for Calculus: Math is not important for medicine. To apply, you need a year of general biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics (doesn't have to be calc based).

Q. Im a junior in high school right now planning my classes for next year. Im in pre calculus lvl 1 ( like above average but not honors level ) and i was wondering should i go up to AP calculus or go down to AP stats for my senior year? Im pulling a 91 this semester for my pre calc grade.

A. I think AP Calculus would be better, as long as you aren't depending on becoming a statistician. First of all, you will be taking a lot of calculus if you do math in college. Taking AP Calculus would give you an awesome foundation for college mathematics, as well as looking good on an application.

What should I have memorized for the AP Calculus AB exam?
Q. I just want some helpful hints concerning what I should memorize (i.e. trig functions and anti-derivatives) so that I can be more prepared for the AP Calculus AB exam. I'm not bad at Calculus at all, I just want a few pointers to help me get a leg up. Please don't give me test taking strategies either, I want concrete materials to cover, not how to use process of elimination. Thanks!

A. -Know your basic derivatives for trig functions. -Know integrals of trig functions (even the ones like secx, cscx) -If given a distance function, know how to go to velocity, and to acceleration functions. And if given an acceleration know how to get to distance. d/dx [s(t)] = v(t) d/dx[v(t)] = a(t) - Know which are vectors and which are scalars. If you are asked to find the distance of an object, and they give you the velocity equation, taking the integral gives you the Displacement. To get distance you need to take the integral of the absolute value of the velocity. - Study basic trig formulas, and double angle formulas. - You are expected to know the unit circle. - Know the requirements for rolles theorem, and mean value theorem. - [cont.]

A. In terms of getting a calculus book this summer to prepare for AP, you want to look for a book that will be useful after the course starts as well. Barron s books always over prepare you for the test (they contain too much information); so plan on sifting through unimportant material if you buy this book. I bought Barron s but I mainly used Princeton s Review s book and it was great; I suggest Princeton s Review. Even better than reviewing with these books, is to obtain copies of every single past free response question asked (ask your teacher, search online; they are free.). Do 5 problems every single week for the entire year and really understand those five, and you will be already more prepared than 90% of the people taking the… [cont.]

Should i take AP calculus during senior year?
Q. Hello, I'm a junior and currently taking Math B. I don't know what I'm going to major in. I hate math. It's like my worst subject. Should i still take calculus because some people say it helps in college and some say its useless unless you have a major in math or engineering. I mean if it looks good on my transcript, is suffering 1 year of math worth it? Should I take AP calculus or not?
Asked by SummerRise - Sun Nov 25 04:29:56 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Definitely not. Just do good on the SAT. Colleges don't care so much what classes you took as your GPA and SAT scores. It's more practical to take an easy course and get the grade than a hard one and get mediocre grades. And it's definitely not relevant enough to kill your senior year with. I never took cal in high school, I just got a 3.0 and a 1320 and I got into my choice college with a 75% scholarship. Just make the most of your senior year before you become a slave to your GPA in college.

Should I take Calculus 1 over the summer, take AP Calculus BC and what should I do to prepare for AP Physics?
Q. I want to get ahead in math and I'm wondering if I'll be prepared if I take Calculus 1 over the summer and then jump to AP Calculus BC. Also, I heard AP Physics is really hard, what summer physics class should I take? Be specific please! Show me effort please!

A. I think you will be prepared if you take calculus 1 in the summer then jump to Ap calc BC.AP calc BC is nothing but just 3 additional chapters different from calculus 1.Also, Ap physics isnt that hard once you have taken calculus before.I guess finish the physics class that is for a senior student first before jumping right into Ap physics. If you have any questions or need any help regarding those classes check out this forum: It is a community of students that are self studying AP classes,Im sure then can help you out.

Should i take AP Calculus or AP Statistics for my senior year if i want to become an actuary?
Q. I am currently a Junior and we are filling out classes that we want to take for next year. I can't decide whether to take calculus or statistics. i know to be an actuary you need to have some kind of calculus AND statistics, but don't know which to take first. any opinions? or help i could get?

A. honestly if you want the best training for that job do AP calc and get it over with. i see my dad's books and stuff and they're mostly calc. teachers in hs will help you more than professors in college, and AP calc is difficult. statistics is the basis of being an actuary but its fairly easy. so AP calc if you want to see what it really takes to be an actuary or take AP statistics and have an easy senior year. but eventually you'll have to take a class in both

Should I take AP Statistics or AP Calculus?
Q. I am going to be a high school senior in the fall and i was wondering if I should take AP stats or AP calculus. My school traditionally goes to calculus and i have heard that it's better for college but it seems like calculus isn't really useful and that statistics is better any suggestions?
Asked by doo doo brown - Thu Aug 6 18:27:15 2009 - - 14 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I would go with Statistics. A lot of high schools tell you that Calculus will look better on your record when colleges look at them but chances are you'll probably have to take Calculus down the road in college again. You're right, Statistics has a lot of useful things to learn that are applicable in real life. Calculus does too I guess but stats is more fun. :D Plus anything that's an AP level, your college won't care if its AP Underwater Basket Weaving. They just like to see that you took higher level stuff.

Calculus AB during the summer or AP Calculus during school year?
Q. Im a junior right now and i have a B- in Pre Cal. Im not good in math at all and i really dont want to take AP Calc during the school year just to fail. I was wondering just how hard it would be for me to take Calc AB during the summer and what grade i might get. Next year as a senior, im going to be having 2-3 AP classes along with holding an officer position in Key Club and varsity sports, would AP Calc be worth it?
Asked by jennifer h - Sun Mar 8 20:13:49 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That is the worst possible thing that you can do! The only time that the AP exams are given is during a week in May. If you take AP Calculus (Which is pretty much a year-long course) during the summer, you will probably forget a lot of the concepts in time for the exam. Do yourself a favor and take it during the school year, because it's a WHOLE lot of material, and you need to be taking it close to the exam! Hope this helps!

What impact is my D in AP Calculus going to have on college admissions?
Q. I'm a senior and my unweighted GPA is around 3.6. I plan on majoring in film and have applied to USC, NYU, and Boston University. USC has sent me a letter stating that they would like to see my senior grades before accepting me. I did get that D and I'm worried. I'm taking a Calculus community college class right now and I was wondering what my chances are for these universities. Be as honest as possible. If you would like more information about me, please contact me.

Whats better a P or a 75 in an Ap Calculus class?
Q. I did horridly in my AP calc class. The teacher said i can either take a Pass or a 75 in the class. I am a senior and i have applied for colleges already. With the 75 my average is 93.5, without it my average is 102.96 .What would be the best course of action?
Asked by am i screwed or is there hope? - Wed Jan 30 23:34:24 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There really is not much difference between the two. It depends on the school that you are applying to. At our school ( a state school), we would look more at the 75, but at many other (read expensive private) schools, they would give you more latitude with the P. So you should choose which depending on where you want to go.
