What should I have memorized for the AP Calculus AB exam?
Q. I just want some helpful hints concerning what I should memorize (i.e. trig functions and anti-derivatives) so that I can be more prepared for the AP Calculus AB exam. I'm not bad at Calculus at all, I just want a few pointers to help me get a leg up. Please don't give me test taking strategies either, I want concrete materials to cover, not how to use process of elimination. Thanks!

A. -Know your basic derivatives for trig functions. -Know integrals of trig functions (even the ones like secx, cscx) -If given a distance function, know how to go to velocity, and to acceleration functions. And if given an acceleration know how to get to distance. d/dx [s(t)] = v(t) d/dx[v(t)] = a(t) - Know which are vectors and which are scalars. If you are asked to find the distance of an object, and they give you the velocity equation, taking the integral gives you the Displacement. To get distance you need to take the integral of the absolute value of the velocity. - Study basic trig formulas, and double angle formulas. - You are expected to know the unit circle. - Know the requirements for rolles theorem, and mean value theorem. - [cont.]

Is it possible to do engineering in college if i only took AP physics B and AP calculus AB?
Q. My physics teacher only let me take AP physics B, not C My math teacher only let me take AP calc AB to take the higher levels at my school, you have to be exceptional is it possible for me to still do engineering? (perhaps mechanical or electrical engineering)

A. My high school didn't even have any AP classes, and I'm in college right now becoming an engineer. The closest thing we had was pre-calc, which was seniors only. AP classes mean absolutely nothing. You can easily get into a college for engineering if you have a good gpa and did extra things in school.

What is the difference between AP Calculus AB and BC?
Q. I'm planning on taking it as a senior next year. I had a 'B' first semester and an 'A' for the second in Precalculus. What is the main difference between them? Is one harder? What do you guys recommend.
Asked by Thanasi - Mon May 18 13:32:18 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. AB is equivalent to taking Calculus I in college. BC is equivalent to taking Calculus I and II in college. I took AB and passed the test with a "3". I was concerned that even though I received credit for Calculus I, I was not taught enough to go onto Calculus II. Boy was I wrong! I took Calculus I at FSU and breezed by with an A. Not only that, but much of what I needed to know for Calculus II, I already learned in high school. As for your future class schedule, your grades in your precalculus class don't mean anything. If you are able and willing to put many hours of studying in, try taking BC. On the other hand, I use the knowledge from Calculus II on a daily basis, so taking the time to develop a strong understanding of it is key to… [cont.]

What is the best way to recieve a 5 on the AP Calculus AB exam?
Q. I just wanted some study tips from former students who have achieved a five, or have done well. I have a Barron's book at home, but I feel that it is not adequate. Are there any suggestions?
Asked by R.E. - Mon Apr 7 13:56:41 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, I took Calc BC but the material is like...80% the same. What you learn in school is pretty much nothing like the exam...I suggest making sure you know your basic concepts very well, and practice FRQs (I used Princeton Review) because it'll help you to think quickly, after you do a couple. Pairing Barron's with PR should be good enough, for practice tests and such. The only way to really get used to the AP exam is to take a bunch for prep. Also, if you've taken physics, or are good at physics, it would help to understand how physics and calc relate. A lot of the questions on the AP test are physics-related, and if you don't understand how to derive the answer to a problem through calc, you can use physics equations to back you up,… [cont.]

What is the minimum raw score you need on an AP Calculus AB exam to get a 5?
Q. I got about 60-65% on the written portion and 80-85% on the MC portion. What do you think I'll get? I did Form B, are the curves different?
Asked by Ahad I - Mon May 12 10:55:15 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I think a 70% is pretty safe lower bound for a 5 on the Calc AB exam. Taking the average of how you think you'll do on the two sections places you just above this mark, so I think your chances for a 5 are pretty good. I don't know if the curve is different for form B. Even if it is I can't imagine a significant difference between the two forms since they would probably be comparable in difficulty.

Q. Anyone know?
Asked by Dragon X - Wed Jan 9 22:11:38 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. AP Calculus BC includes all of the topics covered in AP Calculus AB, as well as convergence tests for series, Taylor and/or Maclaurin series, the use of parametric equations, polar functions, including arc length in polar coordinates, calculating curve length in parametric and function (y = f(x)) equations, L'Hopital's rule, improper integrals, and using partial fractions to integrate rational functions.[5] Students in AP Calculus BC generally receive two semesters of Advanced Placement in mathematics.

Q. It's on May 7th.
Asked by hersheyz - Sat Apr 26 01:58:56 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No, go to a bookstore and buy the Princeton Review Book "Cracking the AP" for your subject -- do a chapter every day and make sure you take those practice quizzes at the end of each chapter. Take a full-length practice test next weekend. Here's the most important part -- when you take those quizzes, and that practice test, *follow up* on all the questions you miss. Look at the answer and its explanation, and rework the problem until you can get it easily. Use that practice test to see what are the last topics you need to figure out before the test. That way you don't waste time re-studying the things you already know -- you need to focus on what you *don't* know. You can do it!

Can you take AP Calculus BC without having taken AP Calculus AB?
Q. This question isn't because I want to skip a math, it is solely to know if there are any rules against taking BC without having taken AB. I ask because as I understand it BC includes AB and thus you get an AB subscore when you take the BC exam.

A. Yes, you can take AP Calculus BC without having taken AB. In my school, pre-calculus is taken in 11th grade, then the student can choose whether to move into AB or BC Calculus.

i have a D in my AP Calculus AB class, can i do this?
Q. I had a C all of first semester until i blew it on my finals and last test, giving me a D. i'm a sophomore in high school and i'm taking AP calculus AB. i didn't sign up for the AP test because i absolutely know i CAN'T do it, so all i'm striving for is to PASS this semester. i'm not freaking out, but is it acceptable for me to not take the AP test and still look decent on a college application?

A. I understand what you are going through. AP classes are hard and I'm taking two this year. I'm taking AP English and AP Biology. Both classes are challenging, but I'm doing better in AP English than AP Biology. Right now, I have an A in AP English, but I'm strugging in AP Biology. I work hard in both classes. Still, I decided that I wasn't to take to the AP Biology test because I knew that I couldn't do it. I'm trying my best to do well in the class. I suggest that you just continue to work hard in your AP class and just try your best. Hopefully, you'll be able to bring your grade up with some hard work. I also recommend that you try talking to your teacher. If you are concerned about your grade, maybe your teacher can help you… [cont.]

Q. How many questions you have to answer in order to get a 3 on AP calculus AB exam?
Asked by myfriend - Tue May 6 13:43:38 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The AP grading policy is somewhat screwed, but basically, (Multiple Choice correct) - (Incorrect x .25) = Raw multiple choice score. The AP Test is graded based on a level scale, meaning that if you score higher than a certain number, you get the grade. In 2007 it was I believe 29. This year it might be 30 or 31. Let's say 32 to be safe. 35 - (.25)(10) = 32.5 There are 45 MC questions. Assuming you get no points on the free response, you need to get 35 out of 45 right, guessing included. However, I don't think you'll get no points on the FR, so I'd really say that if you score around 25-35 on the MC, you're fine.

Calculus AB during the summer or AP Calculus during school year?
Q. Im a junior right now and i have a B- in Pre Cal. Im not good in math at all and i really dont want to take AP Calc during the school year just to fail. I was wondering just how hard it would be for me to take Calc AB during the summer and what grade i might get. Next year as a senior, im going to be having 2-3 AP classes along with holding an officer position in Key Club and varsity sports, would AP Calc be worth it?
Asked by jennifer h - Sun Mar 8 20:13:49 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That is the worst possible thing that you can do! The only time that the AP exams are given is during a week in May. If you take AP Calculus (Which is pretty much a year-long course) during the summer, you will probably forget a lot of the concepts in time for the exam. Do yourself a favor and take it during the school year, because it's a WHOLE lot of material, and you need to be taking it close to the exam! Hope this helps!

A. programs on your calculator won't really help you, you'll do much better if you can do the problem solving without a calculator and just use it to crunch numbers. You aren't allowed a graphing calculator at all in college.
