What should I have memorized for the AP Calculus AB exam?
Q. I just want some helpful hints concerning what I should memorize (i.e. trig functions and anti-derivatives) so that I can be more prepared for the AP Calculus AB exam. I'm not bad at Calculus at all, I just want a few pointers to help me get a leg up. Please don't give me test taking strategies either, I want concrete materials to cover, not how to use process of elimination. Thanks!

A. -Know your basic derivatives for trig functions. -Know integrals of trig functions (even the ones like secx, cscx) -If given a distance function, know how to go to velocity, and to acceleration functions. And if given an acceleration know how to get to distance. d/dx [s(t)] = v(t) d/dx[v(t)] = a(t) - Know which are vectors and which are scalars. If you are asked to find the distance of an object, and they give you the velocity equation, taking the integral gives you the Displacement. To get distance you need to take the integral of the absolute value of the velocity. - Study basic trig formulas, and double angle formulas. - You are expected to know the unit circle. - Know the requirements for rolles theorem, and mean value theorem. - [cont.]

What is the minimum raw score you need on an AP Calculus AB exam to get a 5?
Q. I got about 60-65% on the written portion and 80-85% on the MC portion. What do you think I'll get? I did Form B, are the curves different?
Asked by Ahad I - Mon May 12 10:55:15 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I think a 70% is pretty safe lower bound for a 5 on the Calc AB exam. Taking the average of how you think you'll do on the two sections places you just above this mark, so I think your chances for a 5 are pretty good. I don't know if the curve is different for form B. Even if it is I can't imagine a significant difference between the two forms since they would probably be comparable in difficulty.

Should I take the AP Calculus AB exam even though I never took the class itself?
Q. I'm a senior and I didn't get into the AP Calculus AB classes because my grade in Honors Pre-Calculus was not high enough (I got a 92). I only got into the Honors Calculus class. I have the highest grade and I'm the best at math in the class (sorry if I sound like I'm bragging). Anyway, I got the idea to take the AP exam from someone who got a 3 on it but didn't take the AP course. I'm prepared to study with an AP exam book throughout the year. But I'm afraid to take it because I have heard that it is very difficult, and it costs $86 to register for it. Should I go for it?

A. yeah, same here. it's my third test this week and i'm sick of them already! i'm probably just going to do a few practice multiple choice problems and look over all the free response practice questions we've gotten in class. the free response section last year was really hard, and alot of the themes repeat, so i think the most important thing to do is look over past tests. also remember to get enough sleep so you are focused tomorrow. good luck (although if you fail, the curve is higher :) just kidding)

A. Definitely, above all else, the First and Second Fundamental Theorems of Calculus. Make sure you know all your basic derivatives and integrals. The disk method seems to be a popular player in the free response. Also have a good feel for Simpson's Rule and know your Taylor/Maclaurin Polynomials, etc. Other than that, just make sure you set everything up right. If you get most of the multiple choice and at least 3 points in each section of each free response question you WILL pass. And you get free points for setting the problems up right and remember, there is no double jeopardy, which means if you get the numbers wrong and the work right, you don't get counted off twice for the wrong numbers. Don't stress yourself and have a clear mind… [cont.]

Will I get points taken off on my AP Calculus AB exam?
Q. I took the AP Calculus AB test today. On some of the questions I knew the answer, but I added a little extra to it. For example, if the question was about cars racing, which this was not a question just an example, and the question asked which car was faster my answer would be something like, "Car A was faster. Wow! That car must be awesome." I didn't do this for every question, just three. Do you think they will take points off? I don't think so, but I am starting to worry a little bit because I might be a few points from getting a three or a two. What is your honest opinion?
Asked by Krissy - T - Wed May 6 20:05:04 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I'm pretty sure according to their scoring method, they can only deduct points for specific information. For example, if a part of a question is worth three points, it might be broken down as follows: one point might be for correct setup, one point for correct answer, and one point for correct units, so those are the only things they can give/deduct points for.

A. So in general, almost half on each part :/ I'm taking the exam tomorrow as well, but it's the BC exam. I think the BC exam is actually easier than the AB exam b.c even though it has new material, it will test you more on whether or not you know that material; it won't give you the craziest questions just to make it harder for you b.c you are taking the AB exam only :/ Don't belive me? In mathspeak, that means: dP(t)/dt = k{800-P(t)} To solve the problem, separate variables: dP/{k(800-P)} = dt -(1/k)ln(800-P) = t-t0 (t0 constant, to be determined) ln(800-P) = -k(t-t0) 800-P = exp(-k(t-t0)) P=800-exp(-k(t-t0)) Okay, now let's solve our boundary conditions: a) P(0)=500 500 = 800-exp(-k(0-t0)) = 800-exp(kt0) exp(kt0)=300; kt0=ln(300); t0=300/k so P(t) = 800-exp(-kt+ln(300)) = 800-exp(-kt)exp(ln(300)) = 800-300exp(-kt) b) P(2)=700 700 = 800-300exp(-2k) 100=300exp(-2k) exp(-2k)=1/3 (or exp(2k) = 3) ln(exp(2k))=ln(3) 2k=ln(3) k=(1/2)ln(3) c) lim[t-->inf] P(t) = lim[t-- [cont.]

Whether or not to take AP AB Calculus?
Q. I'm pondering whether or not to take AP Calculus. I'm currently enrolled in full IB, with Math SL (the harder, but not the hardest) as my math. I'll remain in full IB next year (my senior year) but i'm thinking about whether or not i should take AP Calculus. Benefits, it's guaranteed college credit (with a 4-5 on the exam that is), i'll be well prepared to take it, and the prerequisites are either Math SL or Math 140 (a college level class non-IB people take senior year). So, i guess my question is, is the AP Calculus (its Calculus AB, keep in mind) really difficult? I don't want to waste an elective block without the colelge credit it forebears. So those who have taken the AP Calculus AB exam, do you think i'll be able to pass? Oh, and… [cont.]

A. I'm not sure about you, but at my school, we have AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC, and both are ap classes except BC is harder (covers more info in the same amount of time). From what I hear, most of the students who are in Calc AB thinks it's pretty easy, while BC leaves most students crying. I'm planning on taking AB next year, it doesn't seem that bad. I think you should take it =]

AP Calc AB Exam today?
Q. Did anyone take the AP Calculus AB Exam today (May 9)? What did you think? I thought the MC was pretty easy but the FR was hard, especially #4 without a calculator and 6c.

A. Agreed, I thought I was cruising my way to a 5 till I got to the free response. 2, 3, and 4 destroyed me. Hopefully there's a big curve this year, because those questions were so much harder than the 2006 exam.
