Arab people (Arabic: عربي‎, ʿarabi) or Arabs (العرب al-ʿarab) are an ethnic group whose members identify along linguistic, cultural or genealogical grounds. Arabs are a Semitic people originating in Arabia, but today spread across most of Western Asia and North Africa, and many other parts of the world.

The Arabic language became the lingua franca of the southern Mediterranean region with the rise of Islam in the 7th century CE as the language of the Qur'an, and Arabic language and culture were widely disseminated as a result of early Islamic expansion.

Though the Arabic language is older, Arabic culture was first spread in Western Asia beginning in the 2nd century as culturally Arab Christians such as the Ghassanids, Lakhmids and Banu Judham began migrating north from Arabia into the Syrian Desert and the Levant.

How do westerners percieve the arab world?
Q. When I say the arab world, I don't mean to mention terrorists and war or whatever. I mean in general, the richer countries such as UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia? I think it is a fantastic place to live.

What happened to African slaves in Arab countries?
Q. There are sizable populations of African slave descendants in the Americas. But what happened to the millions of slaves imported over centuries into Arab countries? They don't seem to have left behind any ethnic trace. It's hard to believe they didn't have children. So, where are their descendants?

A. Some males were made eunuchs, so have no descendants. Children of slaves were born free; the children of African women and Arab men were full heirs to the fathers' status and property. This - and the fact that there was no attempt made to segregrate them - meant that African slaves were genetically absorbed into the general population. (Nothing new here - Roman-empire Italy was once 1/3 slave; their slaves were genetically lost in the general population, too.)
