How and when did the term "Arab" come about?
Q. Living in Los Angeles, where a lot of Persian and Arab Americans live, I've noticed a fierce need for both cultures to distinguish themselves from one other. I'm aware that Arabic is a semitic language, quite different than Farsi, but when was the term "Arab" first used? For example, during Cyrus the Great's rule over the Persian Empire (500BC era) was the term "Arab" used to identify the Emperor's subjects residing on the peninsula to the West? If not, when did the term come about and how? Thanks in advance!
