When is the point of studying art history as an art student?
Q. In other words, is there anything beyond the basics of the painting itself (medium, style, etc) that a student be looking for when studying art history? I don't find most of art history interesting. I mostly find painting itself interesting. So is studying art history likened to learning arithmetic and basic maths in order to engage in higher, creative math?

A. There are other things that come out of studying art, art history included. Not everyone goes on to become an artist, for whatever reason. Some go on to become gallery managers/curators, art teachers, art critics, etc.. None of these require that they be artist, only that they know about art, how to teach, or know art history. When i was younger and most of my stuff were mostly drawings, i too didn't see the point in art history. Painting changed all that, wanting to study what's been done before became important especially when it came down to technique and how certain illusions in paintings are achieved. As an artist one has to find himself or herself and in the process find the style that will best suit you and becomes part of you, and… [cont.]
