Reading a book about quantum physics. Want to ask an expert a possibly silly question.?
Q. I am reading Lisa Randall's new book, Warped Passages, which tries to explain quantum physics to laypeople such as myself. It's fascinating, and I know it's a very pop-culture type thing to ask, but I was wondering what an expert would have to say about time travel. Going by what she explains in the book, it would seem to me that it is possibly not that far-fetched of an idea. Experts?
Asked by fatblueman - Sat Dec 16 07:57:45 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. From a cosmological point of view, time travel is possible if we can travel faster than the speed of light to break through the "timelines" that bound our current view of the universe. One little problem: it takes infinite energy to accelerate a massive particle to the speed of light. Even the smallest of particles (electrons, up and down quarks, neutrinos) can only approach the speed of light to a certain extent, and carry with them massive amounts of energy.

A. First, I strongly caution you against getting a tattoo in a foreign language. Any mistakes/misunderstanding s that we or you make in the Greek will become permanent on your body. I personally would not trust even my own knowledge of Greek for a tattoo, and certainly wouldn't trust some guy on the internet. And, of course, anyone could make a minor mistake, especially with the accents (my own Greek is a bit rusty, triple check it first). You've been warned. Here is my translation. I have included accents for you, if you wish to use them: . Note that "angel" more literally means "messenger" in Greek, and it is a little strange with the masculine gender, but I still think it is the best word to use. If the gender conflict looks… [cont.]

How to admit an expert witness in a mock trial case?
Q. I know what expert witnesses are and what they are used for but I do not know how to ask the judge if I can admit them. I know once you give credit towards the witnesses education and/or experities, you say "your Honor, I would like to admit ___ as an expert witness" I need help asking if I can admit the witness by saying it formally...any information would be great. Thanks
Asked by AHS - Wed Jan 28 16:25:44 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sorry, the above answer is good but isn't always correct. Many times, discovery isn't even requested. This depends on the jurisdiction, because each has its unique discovery rules. The formal language you want is: "Your Honor, I now proffer Dr. X as an expert to the court and request that she be allowed to testify as such." Sometimes, after you feel like you've qualified the witness as an expert, the opposing side may want to take the witness on voir dire (sort of like cross examination of the qualifications) and might ask further questions. Be prepared for this. Good luck in your mock trial. Are you the prosecution or the defense, or is this a civil case?
