What is the name and author of this article?
Q. I read an article in elementary school (12-15 years ago) that I'd like to find again. The author was Canadian, and he talked about how America was underappreciated for all the aid we've offered the world. I think it's often used in schools (some may call it propoganda). Thanks for any help you can offer.

What do you have to do to become a published author?
Q. I've always dreamed of being an author and I love writing stories. I've just started writing a book that I've had planned out in my head for years and I just wanted to know, once I've finished writing it, what I have to do to get it published (if it's good enough). I know I'd have to go to a publisher but what would happen then?

A. - Don't write the entire book. The publisher will most likely ask for changes in the plot and structure. In any case, they won't read the whole manuscript. What do you really need is to structure your book coherently but only write a few selected chapters from its beginning, development, and denouement. - Get in touch with the publisher, possibly by phone. Contrary to popular belief you don't NEED to have an agent, although it helps. Contact the publisher and ask the relevant info: who should you address your work to and how. - Submit your work (the aforementioned selection) as agreed (which could be by mail, for example), including a presentation letter in which you, basicaly, tell them why they should publish your work - Give them… [cont.]

Q. Ive heard that it's really hard for a author to publish their first book. But how hard is it exactly what are the chances that a author will get their first book published? Ummm im not trying to publish anything... (im just wondering)

A. The chances of getting the very first novel you write published are very slim. Most first novels are not that well written. The writer is usually still learning his/her craft and improves with each subsequent novel written. I read somewhere that most authors sell the third book they have written, and this was the case with me and several other published friends. Probably less than 5% of all novels published by major publishing houses in any given year are by new authors. It is far more profitable for publishers to put out books by established authors who have a track record and a readership. However, a few lucky first time authors will sell their novel, and it could be you.
