A ball is a round object with various uses. It is usually spherical but can be ovoid. It is used in ball games, where the play of the game follows the state of the ball as it is hit, kicked or thrown by players. Balls can also be used for simpler activities, such as catch, marbles and juggling. Balls made from hard-wearing metal are used in engineering applications to provide very low friction bearings, known as ball bearings.

Although many types of balls are today made from rubber, this form was unknown outside the Americas until after the voyages of Columbus. The Spanish were the first Europeans to see bouncing rubber balls (albeit solid and not inflated) which were employed most notably in the Mesoamerican ballgame. Balls used in various sports in other parts of the world prior to Columbus were made from other materials such as animal bladders or skins, stuffed with various materials.

What soccer ball should I get for my son?
Q. My son is starting to play soccer for U12. He needs a size 4 ball. He says he needs a ball that is soft enough to not hurt his foot but he can kick it far. Any suggestions?

A. I seriously think that when it comes to gear and equipment, Adidas is the best. Nike makes the better apparel and have good balls as well, but Adidas' balls are slightly better. If you are buying either Adidas or Nike Size 4, do not get the most expensive ones, like the ones used in the World Cup or Prem. Buy any mid-priced one instead. This is because in this age, apparel and gear are not so important, compared to learning the game and being trained properly. Winning is also secondary. Finally, do not be too overprotective of your son. He needs to toughen up a bit and get used to the rough side of the game. Perhaps not at U12, but a few years down. But learning how to cope with some toughness, will prepare him for that. And until he… [cont.]

How can you get a ping pong ball out of a Starbucks Frappucino bottle?
Q. Place a standard ping pong ball in a Frappucino bottle. The ping pong ball can barely squeeze through. How can you get the ball out without breaking the bottle or the ball? This was something I came across one day while messing around. I don't know if it's even possible to get it out. You really have to push to get the ball in in the first place. I've tried using pressure to get it out but haven't been sucessful. Too much leakage around the ball.

A. Put some Diet Coke in the bottle, drop in a mentos and let the mentos magic do the rest. Certainly the coke-mentos mix is lower calorie than the swill-o-rific frappuchino it replaced... and a much better propellant.

If a ball is dropped is the kinetic and potential energy conserved?
Q. If a ball is dropped is the kinetic and potential energy conserved? If not. Where did it go?
Asked by Calvin - Sun Oct 14 18:48:07 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. while the ball is up in the air before its dropped it has all potential energy and no kinetic energy. when the ball reaches the ground it has all kinetic energy and no potential energy. in between, potential energy is being converted to kinetic energy. you should be able to answer the question knowing this.
