From Google News Search: "balm" Should I dead head my bee balm plants? Q. I've noticed that the birds seem to be enjoying the remaining seed heads but the whole point to planting the bee balm was to encourage the butterflies and hummingbirds. So I'm wondering if I should dead head some of the spent flowers? Asked by greenhouseparrot - Sun Jul 27 15:54:43 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I do, in fact I cut the plants down to about 18 inches or less and let them regenerate from the ground. Leave the second bloom seedheads for the birds, or plant Echinacea and enjoy the bird antics. Done this sooo many times because I always have a thing of chap stick in my jeans pocket. Mineral spirits will work also but you hav eto be careful when using it. Use it outdoors as it has a smell to it. Answered by Judy - Thu Mar 29 21:34:11 2007 How can I get rid of or control a Lemon Balm Plant?
Q. When we moved in several years ago, most of the garden was full of herbs. We have kept some but at the end of the garden we have an old well that's been filled and planted with Lemon Balm. Its lovely but it just takes over and keeps popping up all over the place. As most of the leaves have died off Im going to see if I can pull most of it up. Any ideas as I know Im going to spend most of the summer trying to stop it from over powering my other plants. Asked by fluffy1122 - Sat Jan 31 05:28:21 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is closely related to mint, and grows like mint - sending out runners and often over-powering everything around it. I have lots of lemon balm and it is one of my favorite herbs. The only way to control an already-sprawling bed is to start pulling and digging runners. This is easiest to do when the plant is dormant, usually late fall or early spring. Fortunately, the roots aren't very deep, and it usually comes up pretty easily - but any little piece left behind will regrow and start all over again. Lemon balm is considered somewhat invasive and it is not recommended planting it without a root barrier to keep it from spreading. I'd recommend digging and hand-pulling whatever you want to tame, and… [cont.] Answered by stonefieldhill - Sat Jan 31 11:12:43 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "balm" |
