Are fatwas sent by email based on email correspondence without knowing each other valid?
Q. You can even get fatwas from Grand Ayattola Al Sistani at sistani.org

A. Shia Muslims know that Ayatullah Sistani has offices in London and in Qum. The sistani.org site is from Qum. The najaf.org site is from London. We are familiar with at least the names of Ayatullah Sistani's representatives in those offices. There are also other larger jam`ats whose resident `alims and office staff are reliable sources of information about the fatawa of Ayatullah Sistani. We often write and call these places for information and fatawa.

looking to enrol for correspondence training as a preschool teacher?
Q. I want to open up a preschool but I need training as a preschool teacher, and because I run a computer academy I cannot leave to go to college or university so a correspondence course would suit my needs best. I would prefer if it were biblical based.

A. Ok again, this depends where you live. Each country has different requirements. Before you get into all that, can't you own the school but employ qualified people to actually work in it/run it? I don't see why it would be an issue if you did the admin side of things and didn't actually work with the children.

How to become an event planner in Canada?
Q. No pun intended! I have been reading all of the ?'s and answers by other people in this site, however I've noticed that none of them are from Canada and most of the websites that were noted are based in the US. I would really like to be an event planner but unfortunately I do not know where to start. Can you please help me and let me know if there is any school that offers "how to become a an event planner" course or an online course or even a correspondence school that's based in Canada? It will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

A. I'm sorry, but the advice I'm sending your way is from someone from the States. However, in this case, borders don't matter. I, too, would have loved to have started out in event planning, but I couldn't find any specialized degrees or courses out there. What I did was find the best 'training field' possible... a campus alumni office. I would suggest that you might consider going for a degree in sociology, psychology or interactive communications ( to learn how to interact with a community of volunteers ). Then, while going for your degree, donate as many hours as you can at your school's alumni office. Think about it...they host annual events, special events, academic events, community events, etc.. Every single alumni director ---… [cont.]

How do I get Exexcel to allow a grade for my daughters A level?
Q. My daughter was very ill for her final French A level with Edexcel. The school examining officer recommended we obtained a doctors note which we did. The examination officer told us that a grade would be given based on a similar aptitude student and with consideration to her coursework grades. The examining board have refused to give her a grade. Is there a previously proved case in England for such a situation? We are meeting with the school head next week and when I will advise that the advice given by them has caused this situation. What can I do to help my daughter? The examining board have insisted that correspondence should come from the school not from us.

A. I think it will depend on what you mean by "very ill". I don't think the school has done anything wrong. They gave you the correct advice, which was to get a doctor's note. They then applied for "special consideration" on your behalf, in their capacity as the examination centre. This application has been unsuccessful. What you now have to do is to investigate whether or not you have grounds for appeal against Edexcel's ruling. The school's examinations officer might have knowledge of the appeals process and I am sure they will support your appeal if they think there is a reasonable chance of success. If you are left to contend this on your own, I would suggest that either you enlist the services of a solicitor with expertise in… [cont.]

Can I claim a U.S. correspondence course in Canada?
Q. Hi. I live in Cananda, Alberta to be exact, and I'm looking into taking an illustration course based in the United States, but everything I read when it comes to claiming courses says that you need to be a full-time student to claim any courses based in the U.S or you need to be commuting. However, I read that textbooks as part of a fee included in the tuition of a correspondence course can be claimed and the course that I'd like to take includes the books in the cost of the course. Are there other ways that I can claim this on my 2008 taxes? I always thought that courses, no matter what they are, can be claimed even if only a portion of it. I really need the help of a Canadian tax pro with this one. Please help. Thank you.

A. You cannot claim course fees paid to the US as a deduction, and no, the textbooks cannot be claimed either, for the same reason. But I'm curious. If you acknowledge that you need the help of a tax professional, why would you ask here? I could be a 12 yr old Ukrainian with no knowledge of the Canadian tax system at all...

I got to keep it when I was updated to a 486 (everyone else had pentiums, the careers adviser didn't matter). I have had this computer in my shed all this time and just got it out. Does anyone believe, based on some evidence, that Egyptian has not actually been deciphered?
Q. It seems to me that of the first royal cartouches deciphered 'ptolemy', 'cleopatra', 'caesar', 'Alexander', 'Hadrian', 60 percent of the phonetic values of symbols can be determined from Latin (accipiter, trado, leo, collis, caldera, habitatio, ect...). Further of my studies show patterns of correspondence between Semitic and Egypt which directly contradict all of the results of Egyptologists. Am I the only one who knows? Granted I have met some in the past who know of some of these things, but have no contacts with them now; that was before I began to do my research in this area.

A. Then obviously all of us Egyptologists are part of a vast conspiracy to all somehow come up with similar translations of the same text independently of one another, defend those translations based on the premises of the grammar that has been worked out over the past 200 years, and not ONE of us has broken ranks and told the world. Nor have any of the other philologists who frequently work with Egyptologists noticed or pointed out the discrepancy. Damn, I wish I'd known that we didn't know what the hell we were doing. It would have saved me a lot of late nights translating "The Ship-Wrecked Sailor"; "The Marriage Scarab of Amenhotep III;" the various commemorative stelae of the Tutmosids and Amenhoteps; "The Tale of the Eloquent Peasant; [cont.]

Can the parents of a minor, press harassment charges on an adult if the minor initiates contact willingly?
Q. The minor has almost reached the age of consent, and the relationship is one not based upon any criminal activity. I am 4 1/2 years older than her, which puts me just shortly past the age of legal sexual action. However that is of no concern since the relationship is in no way sexual. There are no cases of offensive or threatening correspondence, which removes it from a 'Malicious communications' category. We both live in the United States of America. testing edit

A. Laws vary from state to state but, yes, in most jurisdictions the parents of a minor can press charges on an adult even if the minor is the one initiating the contact AND they can get a restraining order against the adult, which doesn't look good on the adult's record. Whether it's called "harassment" or something else depends on the criminal statutes of the jurisdiction but the courts take a dim view of people hanging around kids without the parents' consent so I recommend you break off all contact. It's not worth a criminal record!
