Bibliography (from Greek βιβλιογραφία, bibliographia, literally "book writing"), as a practice, is the academic study of books as physical, cultural objects; in this sense, it is also known as bibliology (from Greek -λογία, -logia). On the whole, bibliography is not concerned with the literary content of books, but rather the "bookness" of books.

A bibliography, the product of the practice of bibliography, is a systematic list of books and other works such as journal articles. Bibliographies range from "works cited" lists at the end of books and articles to complete, independent publications. As separate works, they may be in bound volumes such as those shown on the right, or computerised bibliographic databases. A library catalog, while not referred to as a bibliography, is bibliographic in nature. Bibliographical works are almost always considered to be tertiary sources.

Bibliographic works differ in the amount of detail depending on the purpose, and can be generally divided into two categories: enumerative bibliography (also called compilative, reference or systematic), which results in an overview of publications in a particular category, and analytical, or critical, bibliography, which studies the production of books. In earlier times, bibliography mostly focused on books. Now, both categories of bibliography cover works in other formats including recordings, motion pictures and videos, graphic objects, databases, CD-ROMs and websites.

What's the difference between footnotes and bibliography?
Q. In essay writing I need foot notes and bibliography. What's the difference and are they both included in the word count?
Asked by A J - Sun Apr 27 16:14:31 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They are both a part of referencing. Footnotes are what you need when you cite a quote or some information that you've got from somewhere else. You have to cite the source or it is plagiarising (copying someone else's work and passing it off as yours.) A footnote can be done by clicking after the quote etc that you want to cite and if you're using Microsoft Word go to Insert and then footnote then a line will come at the bottom of the page where you say where you say the source. A bibliogrpahy is a summary of all your references in an alphabetical list (surnames first). Some people use the Harvard system while others use the Short Title System. I use the Short Title System where if you cite something within the essay and use a footnote… [cont.]

A. primary source is one in which say a book is written solely based on the authors ideas. he/she has written entire the book without copying or using the details contained in another book. secondary sources are those .. in which a book written by one contains ideas and thoughts incorporated in an already published one for which the original author should receive due consideration. and that comprises bibliography. format for bibliography: surname, first name. publications, version
