Bones are rigid organs that form part of the endoskeleton of vertebrates. They function to move, support, and protect the various organs of the body, produce red and white blood cells and store minerals. Bone tissue is a type of dense connective tissue. Because bones come in a variety of shapes and have a complex internal and external structure they are lightweight, yet strong and hard, in addition to fulfilling their many other functions. One of the types of tissue that makes up bone is the mineralized osseous tissue, also called bone tissue, that gives it rigidity and a honeycomb-like three-dimensional internal structure. Other types of tissue found in bones include marrow, endosteum and periosteum, nerves, blood vessels and cartilage. There are 206 bones in the adult human body and about 300 in an infant.

Functions Bones have ten main functions:

Mechanical

  • Protection — Bones can serve to protect internal organs, such as the skull protecting the brain or the ribs protecting the heart and lungs.
  • Shape — Bones provide a frame to keep the body supported.
  • Movement — Bones, skeletal muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints function together to generate and transfer forces so that individual body parts or the whole body can be manipulated in three-dimensional space. The interaction between bone and muscle is studied in biomechanics.
  • Sound transduction — Bones are important in the mechanical aspect of overshadowed hearing.

Synthetic

Metabolic

  • Mineral storage — Bones act as reserves of minerals important for the body, most notably calcium and phosphorus.
  • Growth factor storage — Mineralized bone matrix stores important growth factors such as insulin-like growth factors, transforming growth factor, bone morphogenetic proteins and others.
  • Fat Storage — The yellow bone marrow acts as a storage reserve of fatty acids
  • Acid-base balance — Bone buffers the blood against excessive pH changes by absorbing or releasing alkaline salts.
  • Detoxification — Bone tissues can also store heavy metals and other foreign elements, removing them from the blood and reducing their effects on other tissues. These can later be gradually released for excretion.

What is the most common way to break a bone?
Q. I'm writing a story and I'm trying to write a scene where the character gets in a fight and breaks a bone. Having never actually broken a bone, I turn to you guys for help. If someone got into a fight, how hard would they have to be hit to break a bone? What bone would be broken? (I'm thinking more of arm or collar bone or something, rather than just nose.) If they put it up and someone hit their arm, could it break it? Or would it have to be hit against something harder?

A. Usually it's a 'slip & fall' that breaks a bone. It would have to be a mighty punch to break someones bone (and not your own as well). If they were pushed and fell awkardly, that's another story.

Can a fossil bone be mineralized with calcium?
Q. Is it possible for a bone fossil to be permineralized by calcium? (the empty space of the bone is filled with calcium minerals) Thank you so much!

A. Fossilised bones with calcium carbonate replacing the original material are very common in nature. Most of the great dinosaur bones are composed of either calcium carbonate or silica. This is because one of the most common dissolved minerals in some groundwater is calcium carbonate, particularly in areas where limey rocks are present, or basalts. The calcium carbonate crystallises out where voids are present in the rock which the carbonate-bearing solution passes, Ideal voids are those left by organism remains. Calcium as the element does not exist freely in nature, so this plays no role in fossilising bones.

A. well I'm going to talk about the ear: it's a concave shape...like a cone, thus facilitating the transfer of noises to the brain. the nose bone points downward, and the cartilage covers it. the whole "downward" thing is to prevent unwanted material coming in. that's also why we have hairs in the nasal cavity. also, if you, for example, pour water on your face, water will nt get into your nose because it would, i guess, defy gravity. hope this helped!

Bone is a graphic novel by Jeff Smith. It was originally serialized in an independently, irregularly published comic book series for 55 issues, from 1991 to 2004, notable as one of the longest-running self-published comic book series by a single writer/artist.
