What's a good book to write a compare and contrast essay on?
Q. I need two books to read and to later write a compare and contrast essay on. I already chose my first book which is Oliver Twist and I need help choosing a second book. The second book has to be of a different author and has to be written from the Ancient Times to the Nineteenth Century. I would like a book that can be easily compared and contrasted to Oliver Twist. Thanks.

A. Tom Sawyer would be a good book to do that on. I read it recently and am thinking it could work. It takes place in the 1800's, so there is a good comparison right there. Good luck!

What book has changed your life the most? How did it affect your way of life and your perspectives?
Q. Many people claim that books have changed their lives. For you, what was the book that you fully read and understood and noticed that it had an effect on your life? What book made you want to change for the better? What book made you realize the meaning of life? What book changed you as a whole?

A. I don't think there is a master narrative that told me how and why to live. However, books seem to help me on my way wherever I go. For instance, Rebbeca by Daphne DuMaurier made me love the classics. Sula by Toni Morrison made me appreciate my mother. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen made me understand my father. A love for the Harry Potter series gave me something in common with my sister. My husband initiated our first conversation with me at a cafe because I was reading The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, and he had enjoyed the book previously. However, if you want a book that will change your life without any outside factors, Siddhartha is a good one. Herman Hesse also wrote a book called Demian that I think is… [cont.]

What are some good books for a book report?
Q. One of my teachers is gonna make us do book reports based on books of our choice. I was wondering what would be good for a teenage child. It has to be over a 100 pages. No twilight please. Something that is appropriate? I don't want a series please. I want a book. Or if it is a series , I want it to be something I can draw enough information out of without having to read the next book. Oh and it must be fiction.

Are book cover designers required to read the book or manuscript?
Q. Is this part of the designer's responsibility? Reading the manuscript consumes more time and I'm sure that the author or editor is well versed with the story and these people may retell the story to the designer, and probably throw in a few points about what they want. Usually, what happens? Do book cover designers (for thick books like novels) read the manuscript first before designing or do they rely on the instructions of the client?
Asked by ( ) - Sat Oct 27 12:00:21 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A mixture of both. The client usually has their own vision of what they want. On the other hand it's hard to get inspired by Cliff Notes so if you want to be a GOOD book cover designer you haveta read them.

A. Get a copy of "The New Breed" by Gary Chester and make that book your bible. It uses a revolutionary system that will elevate your playing to the next level. You should be able to find this book at any music store or online at amazon.com or musiciansfriend.com At first, this book seems to have little practical use, but it will build your independence, reading, grooving, timekeeping and concentration skills like no other book on the market. Get this book before anything else, but I have a couple of other books you may want to check out. "Future Sounds" by David Garibaldi. This book is a method for playing linear funk in styles of Tower of Power and some Herbie Hancock songs. Of you have no interest in funk music, then pass this one… [cont.]

I am not interested in self publishing as I would prefer to send to major publishers to see if they will pick the book up...but there are things I am really in the dark about...such as getting an agent, protecting the content of my book, etc. Is there a good book out there I can buy that goes into these details? A. Writer's Market is definitely a good place to start as far as hard copy info goes. I would also recommend that you read the links in the About Me section of my profile as well as My Starred Questions. Two of my favorite blogs are Nathan Bransford of Curtis Brown, Ltd and BookEnds, LLC. Blogs are especially helpful I think because agents, editors and publishers write exactly what they think and how they feel about the industry. You really get a feel for what the right and wrong moves are. Read ALL of the links and you will gain the knowledge that you need before you start trying to publish your book.

A. You might want to check a book out called "Fingerprints of the Gods". It is even available on the internet. The author has done some serious archeological and geological background work, and the book is actually very interesting. The Mayan culture has some several chapters, but he goes way beyond just the Mayan 'connection'.

He fought back, the baddest of the bad kids: stealing, drinking, robbing and cheating his way out of the Alaskan bush where he honed his artistic talent, fell in love with a girl and got her pregnant. To become part of a family, he reinvented himself jettisoning all that anger to become a docile, devoted husband and father. Fifteen years later, when we meet Daniel again, he is a comic book artist. A. It helps being famous. If you are famous, you can use your celebrity to get a publishing contract, regardless of the quality of your writing ... Assuming that doesn't apply, unfortunately, the fact that people who you know or who have asked say that they like what you have written is of little real value. It is very hard to get an honest critical opinion from people who value you as a friend or relation, and who might be concerned about upsetting you. If you can get a reader for a publisher to read it, he won't be bothered by that; he will simply be thinking to himself, "Can I sell enough copies of this to get my money back" (or, more realistically, "... to make loads of money"). There are websites through which you can pay to have your… [cont.]

So far, the class has been little more than a jumbled series of dates and their corresponding policies. What book should I get my 18 year old girlfriend for our 2 year anniversary?
Q. The only requirement is that it can't deal with vampires. I'm looking for my 18 year old girlfriend for our 2 year anniversary, and I don't read a lot of books myself... I know she's not into Twilight/True Blood/etc., (no offense, but thankfully...) and she really likes Meg Cabot, and kind of teen smut novels. What would be a good book that falls under similar authors or categories, or what would be another good suggestion? Thanks in advance!
Asked by What Should I Get Her? - Wed Sep 30 14:43:59 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If she's into Meg Cabot books, she'll probably enjoy the Georgia Nicolson series by Louise Rennison. The first book is entitled "Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging". The main character, Georgia, is a very witty, feisty young girl who's got a lot of spunk and sarcasm in her, quite similar to Meg Cabot's heroines. Also, I'd say the books are well-written and fun to read. Hope this helps!

I am looking for a specific book of illustrations?
Q. I can't recall the name, but the illustrations are quite surreal. One page is of a man holding up a chair, ready to hit a lump in his carpet. Another is of a house blasting off like a space shuttle. Another is of a woman getting ready to carve a glowing pumpkin. Apparently, this book is just a collection of illustrations with no real text other than the captions for the pictures because the author never returned to the publishing house to deliver the manuscript and they were just published as a picutre book. I would like to use this book for an assignment for my students, but can't remember the name of it. If anybody knows which book I am referring to please answer this question.

A. I've got JUST the thing, if you don't mind books that are fairly challenging. Look up some of the historical fiction novels by GA Henty. The language is slightly archaic (they were written in the late 1800's), but the writing is just plain good and the stories are always very exciting. I'd especially recommend "The Dragon and the Raven," "In Freedom's Cause," and "A Knight of the White Cross: A Tale of the Siege of Rhodes." These books are addicting, and make you a history buff in the process. I know for sure that they're in the AR program, because they're the sole reason I won the contest at my school 3 years in a row. They're on one of the highest levels and worth tons of points. Edit: Here's a link with a complete list of his books: [cont.]

A. nothing too big, but nothing too small. Most would think that since it's kindergarten, they would need to be smaller, but they just have to be big enough to fit at least one text book. I am not saying that they WILL take home text books (Im in 8th grade and i dont even bring them home), but to fit things like folders and a lunch, they should be able to fit at the very least, the size to fit a textbook. Hope she enjoys school!

What is the title of a book about an older sister trying to figure out why her little sister commited suicide?
Q. Rock star named David Angel is a major factor. Older sister reads little sisters journal/diary. I believe it won an award of some kind. I believe I saw a medallion on the book jacket. Probably written after 1990 and definately before 2000. I believe it's considered a young adult book. Reason I remember the name David Angel as the rock star because there is a passage in it about how the name "Frank Langella" reminds the sister of the David Angel mention in her sisters diary. The book jacket may have had a picture of the moon or a candle or both and the picture may have something to do with the title of the book.
