A. Besides trying to pull up on the e-brake pedal, you might want to check the switch that pedal hits when you apply it. If the pedal doesn't come away completely from the switch, or the switch sticks in the depressed position, it will cause your light to come on. Check also the fluid level and have the pads and rotors inspected. A warning light will come on for low fluid level, which could be caused by a leak somewhere. The light may also come on if part of your braking system has failed. The switch and fluid levels you can check by yourself very easily. If you have experience with replacing pads, you can check them yourself, also. Otherwise, take the vehicle to a local, reputable repair shop, and have them inspect the system. A lot of times,… [cont.]

Brake light flashes & goes off; Rear ABS light stays on until I turn engine off and back on?
Q. 1993 Ford Aerostar V6 Extended minivan. Couple of months ago weird things started happening to brake warning lights on dash. In a.m., (cold engine), when first driving, the red brake light will flash on then off; then the yellow Rear ABS light comes on and stays on. If/when I turn engine off and restart, all goes away. Was thinking electrical problem? But, now this is happening more frequently. Example: after turning engine off and back on, the lights will do the same thing for a second time. Third time of engine off/on, lights don't do it. (Just had auto in shop for power steering pump replacement & didn't think to ask mechanic about brake lights. But, I DID ask the mechanic to check all fluid levels: brake, oil, transmission,… [cont.]

A. replace your brake pads .and check the brake fluid ..are you sure it is your brake light for pads or your abs brake light they are 2 different items... if it is your abs system you need to have your master cylinder, power booster or your wheel cylinders checked or replaced and the code reset

BMW running cold and brake light warning?
Q. Hey all, Just bought a 1994 BMW 320i. Anyhow, while driving the temperature rarely gets above the blue...is this normal? I went over 100 miles yesterday and it stayed low. The other problem is that the brake warning light sticks on yet the brakes are VERY sharp. One last thing is the Blaupunkt CD changer has a stupid smart card and it won't turn on...I think I need a code? Any help appreciated...

A. If the brakes are grabbing, you could have a brake caliper or cylinder fluid leak on to the brake pads or shoes which causes them to grab. Check your brake master cylinder's fluid level under the hood at the power brake booster in front of the driver's side windshield. Then see if you notice any wetness on the inside of the wheels around the calipers etc under the car. You really need to have all 4 wheels removed and the brakes checked anyways since you don't know when they were last changed. I would change the engine's cooling thermostat the same time I did a complete flush of the cooling system.

Causes for brake and ABS warning light to come on?
Q. i have a 1999 chevy malibu and when i start up the car the ABS and Brake light come on right after i start the car. In the past they both have usually come on here and there but when i'd stop and turn the car off and back on, they'd both go away, but as of now, they're both staying on. The brake fluid level is full and doesnt require anymore fluid. Could it be the wheel sensors?

A. a wheel speed sensor is most common, it's part of the hub bearing so don't be surprised when they tell you that's what needs replacement

Q. the other morning, my brake warning light came on, it was cold outside, however after about a half and hour the light went off and stayed off the rest of the day and the next day. It came back on tonight {it was cold and rainy out}. There is no noise coming from my brakes and they feel fine. Should I be concerned? What could be the cause?

A. Escapes have been known to have the brake fluid level sending units act up that is probably where the problem is.. and also.. if you have an automatic transmission it is a CD4E.. They can be fussy.. be sure to have the trannie flushed at least every 30,000 miles.. it uses regular Mercon fluid not .. Mercon V.. some of the early models had the transmission dip stick mis-labeled.

Hand Brake light stays on?
Q. Hi, My Lexus RX300 Hand Brake light stays on. I made sure that the hand brake is fully released and still have the issue. I think it could be the brake fluid but it is at Max level. However if I disconnect the Brake Fluid sensor connector, the light will be off. Do you think it is faulty sensor? Can I take it to Toyota dealer to fix it as my Lexus dealer can not inspect it today since Highlander is same as RX300? Is it safe to drive for a short distance with the connector disconnect so I won't hear the warning sound all the time? Thank you.

A. Its possible the parking brake has locked up. The parking brake is cable operated, not fluid. You can drive , but how much damage may occur, I cant comment on. You can take to any service center for inspection.

A. There will be a wear sensor clipped on to the brake pads. You may not have reconnected this properly. If it is the abs light you may also have knocked this sensor when fitting the pads.

Why does my "brake" light and my "rear abs" light come on after a hard brake on my 1992 Ford Explorer?
Q. Normal operation after start up; all warning lights operable, but off; and normal brake function. But when I press harder than normal on the brakes, the BRAKE light and the rear abs light come on, and they stay on until I turn off the car. This will happen even if I'm not traveling. With the car just sitting idling, if I press the brakes too far, the lights come on. Whenever these lights are on the pedal feels a little spongy towards the bottom of travel (but that could be my paranoia) and takes longer to stop. There is NO fluid leakage anywhere, and the MC is full to the perfect level. All brake parts (pads, rotors, drums, shoes, spring kits) are around 1,000 to 1,500 miles old, and I have always changed them myself (for 10 years on… [cont.]

A. The electric cooling fan it probably is not working. Let it idle and heat up: see if the fan comes on. The brake light either means low fluid, and off centered proportionoing valve (from a failed front or rear brake system) or the parking brake partially on, or the parking brake switch misadjusted or damaged. The check engine light means the computer has detected a sensor that is out of normal range. There will be a trouble code stored in the computer. Many parts stores will read out the code for free. Although codes can be misleading, it's a good place to start.

ABS and Brake warning lights turn on intermittently?
Q. 2002 Buick LeSabre - Brakes work fine, recently had front and rear brakes replaced, fluid level fine (but was told it is "dark"). For no apparent reason the ABS and Brake warning lights turn on intermittently - usually only for a moment or two, but sometimes stay on for a few minutes before simultaneously turning off. Brake shop inspected the sensors and said they were fine. Any idea what could cause this? Any idea how to fix it? The brake shop is clueless when it comes to ABS - I don't want to take it to the dealer unless I really have to.

A. It sounds like the brake fluid level or the level sensor is triggering the lights. It's unlikely that you have both a brake concern and an ABS concern simultaneously. With all due respect, why would you have a shop work on your brakes that is "clueless when it comes to ABS ?"

Q. 1993 Nissan Altima GXE I am having a problem with my brake warning light (on the console), that is supposed to come on when your emergency brake is on, is always lit up, no matter what, when I start the car it comes on and stays on until I turn the car off... A. Your brakes are worn out, which caused your brake fluid in the master cylinder to drop, causing the warning light to come on. You need new brakes. Don't just add brake fluid. Get your brake replaced.

They were purchased separately but I do remember the auto parts clerk asking me if my car came equipped with ABS brakes. I told him no because I thought it didn't. Could the wrong type of wheel bearing be causing this? The brakes work fine. The owner s manual states that if the ABS and/or brake warning lights illuminate when the engine is on and the parking brake is in the fully off position, to have the vehicle service immediately. Is there a quick fix for this?

A. The drums will need to be removed again, to have the exciter rings installed onto the drums. It sounds like either the they weren't installed, causing "input" signals missing for the rear wheel speeds. There is a kit that can be purchased from any Ford dealer parts department that comes with installation instructions, two new exciter rings, dust caps, hub nuts, and two new wheel bearings. The part number is 1M5Z-4A013-WW. To order through fordparts.com, click on the link below: https://www.tituswillford parts.com/cart/?pn=1M5Z-4 A013-WW&submit=Search Once installed properly, that should fix the problem you've described. Hope this helps.
