How should I go about Studying for Ap calc ab?
Q. Hey, i just finished an ap calc ab summer course and have a test on Wednesday. How should i go about studying. Im really worried because I usually don't understand a problem until someone else explains the approach. How should i study? what is important for school exams?? I have a princeton review and barron's textbook...

A. Study all your derivatives and rules for derivation. Make sure that that you have no problem dealing with trig identities (deriving, integrating). There probably be at least 1 problem about related rates, those word problems where you have to deal with something changing (volume, ect.). Make sure you also know all the techniques for solving limits. The last thing I'd study would be all the integration techniques you studied. I don't know how far you went, but I'm assuming its not past integration by parts. Just stay calm, study effeciently, and you'll be fine :)

How hard is the AP Calc AB test, in general?
Q. Currently I'm in Calc Hns, a class not specifically designed to prepare you for the AB test. But we cover pretty much the same topics (just over a longer period of time). I was just wondering if the AP Calc AB test is fairly do-able or overly complex? I'd do it if I can...I mean I'll be happy with a 4. I'm doing fine in Calc Hns, I have a 98% right now. So, is it really THAT hard? Or mostly straightforward stuff?

A. I took calc AB(online) and Honors Calc at the same time, because my high school did not offer AP calc. My Honors calc course did not prepare me very well for the AP test. Get a calc AP study guide from the internet or a book and do that too. It will give you a better understanding of what else to focus on before the test. If you have a good understanding of calculus you should be able to get a 4, but if you're having a bad day or the problems end up in your weak areas you might get a 3.

When persuing a carrer in Chemistry, is it better to have a AP Calc. AB or BC as a background?
Q. Is Calculus a big deal in this field? I plan on taking all AP Science courses offered in my school, but I'd like to know if it would be okay if I took AP Calc. AB instead of BC.

A. I took AP Calculus BC a long time ago. In my honest opinion the classes are really similar and you learn the same things except the BC class covers a few more calculus topics. As far as a career in chemistry I think just basic calculus should do you well. However if you're looking to get out of you're math credits at the university level through AP credit (The BC test will give you more credits than the AB test) And you have the option of taking the AB test even though you took the BC Class. Right now it's all about how comfortable you are with math. I'm not sure what university you're looking at but don't hesitate to call that school find out how to prepare for the major that you are interested in. I'm majoring in biochemistry and the… [cont.]

Can I skip Pre-Calc and go straight to AP Calc AB?
Q. Im in Algebra 2 honors, and next year, I want to be in ap calculus ab. I hear that pre calculus is a lot of algebra 2 review, and coming from 2 honors, I think I should be able to go right into ap calc. Will it be too hard for me, or what?
Asked by jsp - Sun Jun 1 00:35:39 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. As a math teacher, I doubt that your school would let you skip a course in its mathematics curriculum. They're usually pretty firm about things like that. As far as if you'd be able to understand calculus without precal, the chances are small. I've never met a high school student with such a strong, intuitive sense of algebra that you really need to make the big "theoretical leap" into calculus. It's best to just bite the bullet and take precal. When you get an A in calculus, you'll thank me. -John

Is it possible to take AP Calc AB and AP Stats together for my junior year? What is the difficulty level?
Q. My sophomore year I took Honors PreCalculus and got a A- the first semester and a B second semester.

A. i took ap calc BC and only passed the AB subscore...it was a difficult class. AP stats is easier than calc, but still not really easy. i wouldn't suggest you take both of those together, but it's great that you're taking them. i would suggest taking stats your junior year and calc your senior year (or visa versa, really, because they're not particularly related).

which do colleges look at as more important ap Calc ab or bc?
Q. I'm a junior in high school now and studying ap calc. I know I can learn bc calc because it s repeat of ab except a few additional topics. the college board says on their website that students CANNOT take both ab anf bc exams the same year. so my problem is should i take that ab or bc test and which one do colleges like better? ( does it really matter?) thanks

A. BC is better because it incorporates AB as a component in the test. If you take the BC test, you will get a grade for AB as well (so you're taking two tests in one). BC is obviously harder, but I think colleges like it more because it's harder--you've taken a higher course than others in high school.

A. I'm taking it tomorrow too! At first I was super stressed but in class I took the 2003 AP exam and I did fine (on the multiple choice anyways). It seems pretty basic. Pretty much all of it was covered in class. Remember that to get a 3 you only need like a 40% (MC and FRQ's). Here's a link our teacher gave us that has past FRQ's for ALL AP tests: good luck!

2007 AP Calc AB Exam?
Q. Has anyone taken the AP Calc AB exam yet this year? I just took it and thought the MC was fairly easy but the FR was KILLER! Did anybody else think the same or differently? Also where did the slope field problem go? It made the 2004-2006 FR so much easier, because it was an easy 9 points. But NO, not on ours!

A. THANK GOD!...you have no idea how good it is to hear that other students had difficulty on the AP Calculus Exam also...(I was starting to think I was a complete idiot)... This morning I took the AP Calc AB Exam and I felt it was harder than all the other (released) exams that we took during class. Well...actually, I think I did ok on the multiple-choice (it was so freaking easy), but the free response questions were WAY beyond human understanding. By the time I got done with the test I felt like running as fast as I could into a brick wall...no kidding... ...I guess the good thing is that if lots of students had trouble with the test (specially the FR), maybe the collegeboard will go easier on the grading...I hope...they better...ahhggr!! Will not having taken AP Calc AB (in high school) affect my math college courses that much?
Q. Okay, so high school senior here. I chose Calculus Hns this year instead of opting for AP Calc AB. At first I was confused which one to take, but my counselor stuck me into Hns for the time being and she said I could switch later if I wished to. And when the course started, i did feel Hns was too easy and tried to switch, but spots in AB were full. So, now I'm in Hns right now, really regret not having taken AB. What I'm curious about is how much this will affect my college math course selection options. Will I be able to jump right in to Calc II, or will I have to repeat Calc I all over again? I heard some colleges do have a placement test, will I be able to get into Calc II if I pass it? Also, I don't think I'd be ready enough to take… [cont.]

A. You probably will have to retake Cal 1 in college. Some schools do have placement tests but those are just for entry level courses and I don't think Cal is entry level. However, some school offer other tests to receive credit for classes without taking them. For instance, I received credit for my general science requirement and my two general English requirements by passing what's called a CLEP test. So ask your college academic adviser about those options.

Help with an AP Calc (AB) question?
Q. 6 of 1994 AP Calc AB Test Free Response. :) Let F(x)= (from x to 0) sin(t^2)dt for 0 x 3. a. Use the trapezoidal rule with four equal subdivisions of the closed interval [0,1] to approximate F(1). I am primarily having trouble with how to integrate sin(t^2)? I cannot begin the trapezoidal rule unless I do so? Thanks for ANY help! You don't need to integrate for the trapezoidal rule? F(x) = the integral of sin square though, so to find F(1/4), etc, wouldn't I need to do the integral? Ahh, I understand. Thank you. :)
Asked by Gabby :) - Wed Apr 15 18:01:53 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You don't need to integrate this before you use the trapezoidal rule. For the trapezoidal rule, you're adding the area by approximations. With four equal subdivisions, you'd use: 1/2 (f(0) + f(1/4)) (1/4) + 1/2 (f(1/4) + f(1/2)) (1/4) ... Where f(t) = sin(t^2) You can't integrate sin(t^2) simply. Re: Additional info: The trapezoidal rule IS the integral - you're using tiny trapezoids to approximate the area under the curve, which is the integral of the curve.

Q. Let f(x) = e^(x^2). At how many points in the interval [-a,a] does the instantaneous rate of change of f equal the average rate of change? Can someone help me figure out how to do this question?

A. f'(c) = [f(a)-f(-a)]/2a = 0 There is only one such c; at c = 0.
