Where shall I get resources on X-ray diffraction characteristic pattern of urinary calculi?
Q. I wana analyse urinary stone as part of my research. The laboratory where I want to analyse the stones has no software to decipher the x-ray diffration patterns to their equvalent chemical composition of the common urinary calculi/uroliths. Any body who can help in providing how to intepret x-ray diffraction pattern of common urinary stones

Calculi of the tonsils?
Q. I know that this is a somewhat common problem... but I get calculi of the tonsils, which is when little food particles get trapped in the back of my mouth in the deep crevices of my tonsils. It causes bad breath and it is very uncomfortable. Anyone else suffer from this have any tips on how to deal with the problem or remove the debris? So far for me it's been a small flashlight and a Q-tip.
Asked by Nicole H - Thu Nov 8 06:40:42 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I get this, it is horrible and uncomfortable. I found the best thing to do is to gargle soluble aspirin repeatedly until it gets dislodged. (Aspirin also has anti-inflammatory properties so this may help too), failing that I would try gargling with mouthwash (at least it'll help the breath!!) Another thing that has helped is eating coarse food like crisps. I can't tolerate the Q tip down the throat method - makes me gag!!

What is a good Multivariable calculus textbook at the university level?
Q. Right now, my multivariable calculus class uses "Vector Calculus" by Marsden and Tromba but I really dislike how this textbook is written. It is obscure, is not good at explaining it's examples and often times I feel like it isn't comprehensive enough. Could you guys recommend to me a very good Multivariable Calculus textbook that I could read and then understand this material? Thanks in advance!

Q. I will be teaching Calculus I with Analytic Geometry this semester (College Level). I am planning on spending three to four class periods reviewing algebra concepts. Coming off a summer break, I think it's a good idea to review.

A. I would say none if it's at the college level. They can do there own review. But to be nice I would do a class period doing some algebra review.

How is calculus used by fighter pilots?
Q. A friend of mine is gonna be a navy pilot and he is taking AP Calculus BC senior year in high school. He says it is needed to be a navy pilot... I thought the computer, the HUD and all that did all the calculations for you?
Asked by becks - Fri Jan 4 22:56:57 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Calculus, per se, is NOT a prerequisite for either entry into or completion of the US Naval Flight Officer program. HOWEVER...depending on your friend's desires, a familiarity with calculus will certainly make easier the basic mathematics that ARE required for completion of the program...AND...if he/she wishes, after flight school, to go to Test Pilot School or become an Aeronautical Engineer and then enter the astronaut program, then yes, I would say certainly take as much math, including calculus, that you can fit into your program, because Test Pilot School is practically ALL advanced mathematics and the competition to enter the Astronaut program is very intense, and a familiarity with advanced mathematics is pretty much a requirement.

A. Smaller ones usually tend to pass randomly, but larger ones will need help. Drinking cranberry juice and eating starfruit can help ease the passing and breakage. I would go to the doc for pain meds, so to not sugar coat things, you will be needing pain killers. To avoid future stones you will need to change your diet and drink a lot more water for hydration. Restrict your oxalate intake. Good luck i commend you on going through this as this is a very painful dilemma.

How important is a first semester calculus class for a biology major?
Q. So i just finished my first semester of college and i didn't do near as well in calculus as i had hoped. I passed but just barely with a D. My major is biology and i only need one math credit and it could have been algebra but i took calculus because i had it in high school. So how bad is this D gonna hurt me?
Asked by Cody - Fri Jan 2 16:04:36 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well... as for your GPA that is really bad. Adjusted GPA's are not counted anywhere. Meaning, even if you retake the course and get a C, you will always carry that D with you, everywhere. Best of luck. Also, Look at your curriculum guide. A grade of a D is usually not a passing grade to advance in your degree plan at some schools. Some or Most require C's or better. Go talk to your adviser stat.

What calculator do you recommend for Calculus I-III in college?
Q. I want to know if I should get the Ti-89 Titanium for college Calculus and for AP calculus next year. I have a ti-84 Silver edition right now. Is there a better calculator for calculus than the Ti-89?
Asked by Curious Person - Mon May 18 20:39:17 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. At least an 83. Im halfway through calc 3, myself, and Im managing without a calculator at all. I rent an 83 from the school whenever I have a test. Edima, below, is right. You dont really need a calculator for higher calculus. Most of calculus is conceptual. And manipulation of symbols on paper. There is very little computational work that cant be done on paper, in the head. The only time you truly need a calculator is to evaluate trig functions or logarithms; and more than likely, the answers will "coincidentally" be trivial to evaluate, something you should know in the head anyway.

A. It can be difficult, but it will depend on your level of committment. If you want to study, then do you will do fine. Read the chapters. Be prepared for the lectures before class. Take good notes. Review the notes after each class. Don't just crash for the test. Make time for regular homework assignments. Don't get behind. I think you will be fine. If you don't take the at the same time, you will be behind.

How can one get a handle on calculus if they have problems with algabraic manipulation?
Q. What are the most difficult (in your opinion) types of problems in calculus? How can one get past the notation and really "understand" what is going on, besides learning how to chug and plug numbers into equations? How much could a tutor help?
Asked by sunrayman123 - Wed Jun 6 20:57:01 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I had the same problem, and found that a good resource is Calculus for Dummies (the first fifth deals with all of the algebra you need to know for calculus) . The most difficult problems for me were 2nd and 3rd level derivatives. The most amazing thing is that I was taking Calculus for the second time before I figured out that calculus deals with rates of change. This little bit of knowledge vastly helped me in conceptualizing the problems. It seems simple, but my first teacher never mentioned it. He just dealt in numbers. A good tutor can help a lot.

A. I'm a chemical engineer. Engineering uses calculus-based understanding. Yes, computers can carry out calculations and modeling, We'd just mindlessly use the computer without math, which would be ethically irresponsible for engineers. Without calculus, We would not be able to discern whether answers make sense. Calculus is especially needed when we need to start over from scratch in formulations.

Asked by Julia - Mon Oct 5 01:56:06 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Depends on what you're doing with your bachelors in psychology. If you wish to pursue a masters or doctorate degree, working in math will be pretty critical because you'll be dealing with statistics and probability and population samples and you have to show you can do it all to get into graduate school. Mostly you'll be working with statistics though more than calculus in psychology. But calculus doesn't hurt and rounds out the education a bit if you wish to. A piece of free advice? Take your statistics early on and REALLY pay attention to it - it really changes how you process your information as you pursue your psyche degree and analyze and assess info you'll be working with.

Asked by AppleCard! - Sun Dec 2 23:12:22 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Let x(t) = displacement, v(t) = velocity, a = acceleration (constant), at time t. a = dv(t)/dt = -5 v(t) = -5t + c (integrating) v(0) = c = 50 v(t) = dx(t)/dt = -5t + 50 x(t) = -5/2 t^2 + 50 t + c x(0) = c = 0 x(t) = -5/2 t^2 + 50 t The car stops when v(t) = 0, -5t + 50 = 0 t = 10 the displacement is x(10) = -5/2 (10)^2 + 50(10) = 250 ft
