From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Calculus (Latin, calculus, a small stone used for counting) is a discipline in mathematics focused on limits, functions, derivatives, integrals, and infinite series. This subject constitutes a major part of modern mathematics education. It has two major branches, differential calculus and integral calculus, which are related by the fundamental theorem of calculus. Calculus is the study of change, in the same way that geometry is the study of shape and algebra is the study of operations and their application to solving equations. A course in calculus is a gateway to other, more advanced courses in mathematics devoted to the study of functions and limits, broadly called mathematical analysis. Calculus has widespread applications in science, economics, and engineering and can solve many problems for which algebra alone is insufficient. Historically, calculus was called "the calculus of infinitesimals", or "infinitesimal calculus". More generally, calculus (plural calculi) may refer to any method or system of calculation guided by the symbolic manipulation of expressions. Some examples of other well-known calculi are propositional calculus, variational calculus, lambda calculus, pi calculus and join calculus. From Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "calculus" How do you study calculus and retain the information you learn? Q. I'm taking my second calculus class this semester and I can't seem to remember anything from the first one, or to retain anything new. Math has never been my strongest subject, but I've always managed to do fairly well. I can't seem to do even that much now. How do you study calculus? How do you retain the information from one math class to another, and when using it in other disciplines? Asked by second spring - Fri Sep 11 22:23:24 2009 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments A. Hello. This is a very common question, and actually, in my opinion, it is rarely ever addressed properly. The problem is that people try to study math like they would a history class. They try to memorize all of the formulas letter for letter and don't give it a second thought. This is obviously wrong (although, admittedly, this is a bad way to study history, as well) - math is NOT memorization - it is about problem solving. You take some concepts that you know and apply them generally to NEW problems and ideas. So, you should understand the concepts behind what you are doing in class - you must understand what your formulas actually mean and decide how to apply them. Q. I'm writing a math extended essay for IB, and I need to do research involving how calculus of variations can be applied to the trajectory of a space craft. Any tips on where I should start? Asked by Ryan - Sat Aug 22 15:27:41 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. The calculus of variations involves solving integral equations for unknown functions under the integral sign given certain conditions or constraints. The types of integrals are classified according to "kind," with integral equations of the First kind having the unknown function only under the integral sign, and Second and Third kind equations having the unknown function both inside and outside the integral, and are usually conceived as operators on functionals from Hilbert space into itself. I would recommend perusing the University library and perusing texts on Mathematical Physics and the Calculus of Variations. This will lead you to historical references and the development of the theory in the context of real problems the theory was… [cont.] Answered by Pricegems - Wed Aug 26 14:59:31 2009 Is it possible to take successfully complete college algebra and business calculus in summer?
Q. I am planning on taking College Algebra in summer A, and Business Calculus in Summer B. With both of these courses being difficult, would this be very difficult to accomplish? Also, how difficult is Business Calculus? Asked by serge.coudert - Thu Jan 8 22:16:41 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. That is a very doable combination. I have to take two upper-level college Chemistry courses in the summer. I hear from everyone (students and teachers) that Business Calculus shouldn't even be considered Calculus because it is so easy and isn't very Calculus oriented. I aced my college algebra course, so that shouldn't be a problem either. You should be fine. The only thing you should be worried about is how you will be paying for these courses. Good Luck and I hope this helps! Answered by read umbs - Thu Jan 8 22:23:40 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "calculus" |
