What car should i get a 2007 Pontiac g5 or a 2003 Subaru Impreza wrx?
Q. I am a 19 year old and I am a bit picky on cars because car insurance is high for me. I just want someone that has some experenice with those cars. Suggestion for other cars are fine too, only sport cars or coupes.

A. I'm really surprised to see this question. The wrx is a terrific car. I used to own one for four years and single thing didn't go wrong with it. The insurance was fairly inexpensive on the vehicle as well. The 2002 and 2003 models are considered compact sedans by insurance. The 2004+ models are considered sport sedans, so they have slightly higher insurance. If you're comparing their performance, I can't think of one thing that the Pontiac does better. It MIGHT get better gas mileage.

Trying to sell my car in Illinois but my car is registered in New York?
Q. I just moved from New York state to Illinois two months ago. However, my company plans me to move me to the office in California. I'm trying to sell my car in Illinois before I move to California and planning to buy a new or used car over there. I don't plan on changing my title, insurance, registration from NY to Illinois since I'm changing my car and live in California. How can I sell an out-of-state registered car?
Asked by apknuke - Thu Oct 26 03:30:28 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You shouldn't have any problem selling it with a NY title. The person who is buying your car should just be able to take the NY title to the DMV to transfer ownership. It might just take a little longer for the paperwork to be done. You may want to check with the DMV in Illinois just to be sure, as motor vehicle laws do vary from state to state.

Q. Suppose a car can accelerate at 1m/s2. How large a break in traffic is needed to enter a highway where cars are moving a 20m/s if the drive wants to avoid forcing the next car to slow down or to approach closer than 25m?
Asked by Vivian C - Mon Jan 7 22:22:39 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Assumptions: 1) The entering car is stopped 2) The entering car begins accelerating as soon as the rear bumper of the car it will fall in behind passes its front bumper. What distance does it take a car to accelerate from 0 to 20 m/s at a rate of 1m/s ? 1) Final velocity = initial velocity + acceleration * time 2) Distance = initial velocity * time + 1/2 acceleration * time Plugging in the known values, the first equation becomes 20 m/s = 0 m/s + 1m/sec * x x = 20 sec Now we can calcuate the second equation D = 0 m/s * 20 sec + 1/2 * 1 m/s * (20 sec) D = 0 m + 200 m If we need to keep a 25 m space behind us, that gets added to the necessary distance.

Which luxury car is the most expensive to maintain?
Q. Out of all the luxury cars, which car is the most expensive to maintain and repair? I was just wondering because I currently own a '98 Mercedes C230, and I'm trying to figure out if I should keep it or buy something else. BUT I need to know if it would be the best option because I might be putting more money into a newer car (any) , but I do want another luxury-type car. Any suggestions?

A. Other than custom built exotics it has to be a Rolls Royce. $10,000 for a brake job ... and that was just the front brakes!

How does the whole car insurance thing work?
Q. I am a 19 year old boy. My parents are buying me my first car. It is a nice pre-owned car. How does the insurance for the car generally work? Is it required? I will be in college next year. Can they take care of my car insurance? How does it work? I heard that they can put my car under their insurance. Is this true? Please explain.

A. If you park your car on your parent's property, and never drive it anywhere, you might not need to have any insurance. But if you are going to take that car out on the public highways, you need all sorts of different types of insurance to pay for medical expenses if anyone hurt in an accident, pay for repairs if any damage from accident, get another car if it is stolen, protect your assets (house, car bank accounts) from beign drained by law suits, and also keep you out of jail. While you are living under your parent's roof, they can add you to their insurance policy ... this will be expensive, but not as expensive as a policy in your own name. Once you go to college, and live wherever the college is, no longer under your parent's roof,… [cont.]

I have a 1996 Grand Am SE, whenever I go to start the car up, there is like a rattling noise under the hood, it sounds kind of like something is trying to start up..I have no idea what it could be. Any ideas on what could be wrong? The noise only lasts a couple seconds, once the car is started up, it runs perfectly fine.

A. there's a ton of things that could do that, from a loose wing nut on air filter to a tool left by a mechanic. try opening the hood and having someone start it to try and narrow it down.

Modern car paint work maintenance - how can I remove superficial scratches?
Q. I have a 3 year old car which has a typical modern paintwork finish. Unlike my previous (older) cars that I could simply remove superficial scratches and blemishes using cutting compound or even just polish, this does not work now. As I understand it, most modern paintwork has multiple layers of a clear'varnish' product. Any suggestions of what I can do short of taking my car to a professional auto paint shop?
Asked by gemhak - Sun Apr 16 00:30:51 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Your car is painted with a 2 (or 3) stage paint. This is a basecoat/(pearlcoat/)clea rcoat system. The reason that it has clearcoat on it is so that it can get scratches and be returned to it's full brightness without taking off any "paint." The method for removing superficial scratches from clearcoat is the same as it was for acrylic enamel paint. Cutting compound used in a circular motion until friction creates heat which promotes cutting. You don't need too much heat to promote cutting and many shops use styrofoam waffle pads to keep the heat down. Back when we used to cut enamel we would use a wool pad, or a cotton pad. If you have tried this method (cutting compound) and it's not working, you either need to use a buffing… [cont.]

Do you die from car gas if you start the car in the garage with garage door shut ?
Q. I need a serious answer . You are in the house and the car is in the garage. You start up the car and close the garage door shut, the garage does have the little small spot for air. Can you die or suffer intoxication (or how that's call) from the CO2 that the car release while you are in the house ??? I don't think so but my mom kept arguing with me and open the garage door ~_~. Unless you are deathtrap or something. I don't want to but it is winter and it's so cold to leave it open >< .

A. You may not want to open the door because it's cold, but if there is incomplete combustion in a closed area you will have enough CO produced to make you sick or kill you. The engine of a car has very incomplete combustion of the gas and CO is produced in unhealthy quantity and the effect ic umulative, you don't get rid of the CO in your bloodstream for a while. Listen to your mom "Carbon monoxide is produced by furnaces, water heaters, cooking ranges and idling cars. It is a colorless and odorless gas that cannot be detected by smell, taste or sight. The gas is not only deadly, but deceptive as well, because carbon monoxide poisoning often masquerades as other illnesses"

How do I know how much a car uses gas mileage?
Q. I will be going to college soon and I am looking for a car that is economic and does not use a lot of gas (gas prices are expensive!!!). I want to know when buying a car what characteristics to look for in order to see if a car uses to much gas. I know that big trucks need a lot of gas often. But in a regular small car, what info should I need to know? A car that I looked at said that gas mileage was 34 mpg city/40 mpg hwy. What does this mean? Also, do I need to check the engine? For example, 1.5L I4, 16 valve, 106@6000 hp. What do I need to look for in order to save gas. What are the best cars right now that do not use much gas, of good quality, and economic?

A. here's some basic tips keep inmind when looking at gas mileage: -the more horsepower an engine has the poorer the gas mileage. -the more cylinders an engine has the poorer the gas mileage -epa estimates (the 34 city/40 hwy you asked about) are only estimates and are usually a little higer than reality. but they're pretty close. -city mpg (miles per gallon of gas) are what you can expect to get when driving in town on surface streets where you make lots of starts and stops. -hwy mpg are what you can expect on the freeway when you are driving around 65mph without any significant or persistent slowdowns. if you're looking at the engine try to get a 4 cylinder. it's the smallest engine available in most cars and will get the best gas mileage. What is the best car window paint that looks good yet affordable?
Q. I am planning on decorating my friend's car for senior graduation. I want to write stuff on her car using the special paint that most people use to put "go team" on their cars. I'm not quite sure what they use. Anybody know? Or that has done it before? If all else fails, what else can I use to draw/paint on people's cars that is not permanent?

A. That stuff is on sale at Kragen's or similar car part stores. If they don't have it, ask them to look in the computer and see which nearby store would have it.

What to do when a rebuilt salvage car is involved in a car accident and is totaled?
Q. I had a chevy cavalier rebuilt salvage car. I got involved in a car accident and the car was totaled. The insurance company gave me a check and left me the car. The car has been sitting crashed for like 4 months now. I want to fix it but do I need to do any paperwork? I live in the state of Texas. Can I just fix it and drive it like that?

A. Yes, you can fix it and drive it. Since it already had a salvage title, it can't have a 'double' salvage title. =]
