An automobile, motor car or car is a wheeled motor vehicle used for transporting passengers, which also carries its own engine or motor. Most definitions of the term specify that automobiles are designed to run primarily on roads, to have seating for one to eight people, to typically have four wheels, and to be constructed principally for the transport of people rather than goods. However, the term automobile is far from precise, because there are many types of vehicles that do similar tasks.

As of 2002, there were 590 million passenger cars worldwide (roughly one car per eleven people). Around the world, there were about 806 million cars and light trucks on the road in 2007; they burn over 260 billion gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel yearly. The numbers are increasing rapidly, especially in China and India.

Cars in the 1920s were made to last a lifetime. How long do you expect your car to last before you sell it?
Q. Collectors pay top dollar for cars made in the 20s. Back then automakers took pride in their product. Now, anybody driving a car more than 10 years old doesn't want to invest a dime in it because it's virtually worthless on the used car market. These days, filling the tank of a 10 year old car doubles its value! And does it seem like we're getting raped when we pay the money for what we believe is quality, but the car doesn't end up lasting any longer than a Yugo? Am I the only one that feels rage about the poor quality & workmanship and the high prices we're forced to pay because of government mandated bumpers, lights, gismos, gatdgets, bells & whistles?

A. My cars usually last about 10 years. I think my DH and I keep cars MUCH longer than the average consumer. DH just traded in a 1979 Chevy van for a 2004 Ranger and I have a 1998 Ranger that I bought new and traded a 1989 Mustang for.

What are the strange cars parked along side the road for?
Q. I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed them. I see strange cars of all different makes and models, that occasionally park in random spots along the road, or in parking lots with view to the road. They usually have a doughnut shaped design on the drivers side door, and they have no visible radar guns, or any strange antennae. What are these cars for?

What brand of luxury cars is the most affordable?
Q. I am wanting a car that is more than your mother's Toyota, but am trying to keep the cost down. Any make&model suggestions? I'm looking primarily at new cars.

A. By luxury I'll assume you mean Lexus, Infiniti, BMW, Accura, MB, etc. A G35 or an S300 are the best cheaper ones. But I recommend the Mercedes Benz C350 that just came out, because it starts at a reasonable price, and it has everything you need.
