A chemical formula or molecular formula is a way of expressing information about the atoms that constitute a particular chemical compound. The chemical formula identifies each constituent element by its chemical symbol and indicates the number of atoms of each element found in each discrete molecule of that compound. If a molecule contains more than one atom of a particular element, this quantity is indicated using a subscript after the chemical symbol (although 19th-century books often used superscripts). Chemical formulas may be used in chemical equations to describe chemical reactions. For ionic compounds and other non-molecular substances empirical formula may be used, in which the subscripts indicate the ratio of the elements. The 19th-century Swedish chemist Jöns Jakob Berzelius worked out this system for writing chemical formulas. From Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "Chemical formula" What is the chemical formula of an eggshell? Q. I need to know the chemical formula of an eggshell and for acetic acid. Also what the balance formula is. Asked by Foxy - Tue Sep 5 17:29:27 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. The acetic acid has the empirical formula CH2O and the molecular formula C2H4O2. The eggshell is largely crystalline calcium carbonate. Chemical formula: CCaO3. To balance the equation, we must ensure that the sum of the atomic numbers on each side of the equations are equal (required by the conservation law of electric charge), and that the sum of the atomic masses on each side are also equal (required by the law of conservation of baryon number). Answered by Green Alex - Tue Sep 5 17:42:56 2006 Writing chemical formula of a precipitate that forms upon adding H2SO4 to a given solution? Q. Write the chemical formula of the precipitate that forms and then re-dissolves upon adding H2SO4 to a solution that contains K+, [Al(H2O2)2(OH)4]- and OH-. Ya, that seems right, thanks. Now do you how to calculate the theoretical yield of the precipitate formed assuming that you started with 1.00g of Al(s) and you produced and collected the precipitate quantitatively? Asked by mike14051 - Mon Sep 22 08:13:46 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Don't you mean [Al(H2O)2(OH)4]-? There's no hydrogen peroxide to complicate matters, is there? Adding sulfuric acid will neutralize the some of the OH- causing the equilibrium between the Al(OH)4- and Al(OH)3(s) to shift to the solid precipitate of aluminum hydroxide. Then adding more H2SO4 will neutralize the aluminum hydroxide forming aluminum ions and water. Al(OH)4- + OH- + 2H+ --> Al(OH)3(s) + 2HOH(l) Al(OH)3(s) + 3H+ --> Al3+ + 3HOH(l) The potassium and sulfate ions are spectator ions. === Al3+ + 3OH- --> Al(OH)3(s) 1.00g 0.0370 mol ...0.0370 mol 0.0370 mol x (78.0 g Al(OH)3 / 1 mol) = 2.89 g Al(OH)3 Answered by pisgahchemist - Mon Sep 22 08:27:32 2008 How do you know what the chemical formula for something is?
Q. Like, it says that for magnesium chloride the formula is MgCl2 (with the 2 in subscript xD) How do you figure out what the chemical formula is for an element/group of elements?? For example, magnesium bromide. Thank you so much! Asked by emma - Sun Jun 14 14:28:32 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. it's simple, just look up the element symbol and find out the charge, then balance out the charges. i'll walk you through magnesium bromide, make sure to get a hold of a periodic table: first, look up the symbols for both magnesium and bromide...you'll find: magnesium = Mg bromine = Br then, look up their charges...it's easy to find elemental charges, just look at the group number, which is located at the very top of each column on the table. Remember, group means top to bottom, period means left to right. You also need to know these basic rules for finding charges: for groups 1 to 4 (IA to IVA): the charge is equal to the group number for groups 5 to 7 (VA to VIIA): the charge is equal to (group number - 8) note that these rules skip… [cont.] Answered by user-friendly - Sun Jun 14 18:13:47 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Chemical formula" |
